  • Blackberries can be a great place to start if you want to grow fruit. UT Assistant Professor of Residential and Consumer Horticulture Natalie Bumgarner talks about what options are out there. Blackberries traditionally fruit on floricanes or second year canes. But, there are now primocane blackberries that fruit on the first year cane in fall. Primocane plants can make management easy and reduce diseases. Natalie shows several new cultivars of blackberry developed by the University of Arkansas.

I just put two Poncas in the ground yesterday and can’t wait to try them. I’m curious about the “subacid” taste, though, because I have two Sweetie Pies that are also not so tart but don’t seem to be as tasty and good for fresh eating like the PrimeArk Freedom.

Zone 9 here, tried several blackberry cultivars but my favorite has been the Kiowa blackberry. They taste amazing and have HUGE berries, but have never dealt with a plant that had sharper thorns. Any advice on increasing the number of canes? I either get one very thick cane (1" in diameter) or 2 very thin ones (1/4"). I remove floricanes after harvest and top the current canes and leave about a foot of lateral growth on the primocanes. Instead of sending up new canes, the growth seems to be around where I cut the canes at. Have this problem with both in-ground and in-container plants.

petals from the past youtube channel has videos showing their "TPUPS" system for Kiowas - although he says to only select two canes per plant
