I love me some blackberries too but I’m keeping mine in BIG pots because they can be so aggressive. Keep an eye on them because those shoots are more than likely to sprout up on the other side of that fence next season. But no one should complain about nature’s candy growing freely on the property. Thanks for sharing and stay blessed! -Calvin
Blackberries are native to the area but they grow along creeks and ditches, so you will need to soak with a soaker hose every once in a while. I also have sweetie pie and prime ark freedom thornless blackberries. They are flower out now. The prime ark freedom will grow a few berries in the fall, just enough to snack on. They are also one of the first to ripen. I usually put some mulch on them to keep the weeds down. Plants looked really nice.
This came at the right time! I live in a similar climate as you and for the last two years have to struggled to grow raspberries😫So this year I decided to try blackberries out, I now feel more confident in my choice! (p.s I still got raspberries because my stubborn self just wont give up🙃)
Man, I shouldn't have come back and read the comments. I tried growing Heritage, Caroline, Anne, and even mysore about 10 years ago with little success. Mysore had vicious thorns, did not like summer sun, and was not frost tolerant. Now I am thinking of trying Glencoe, and maybe Dorman Red. They like acid soils, and I would grow them in containers so I could move them around. Blackberries are much easier to grow.
I put in 3 blackberry's last year. Once 1 is looking good. One is totally dead and the other is struggling. I have them on the east side of my west wind barrier netting. They get full sun from mid morning to noon-ish. So not sure if they just are not getting enough sun or I under watered them last summer considering our heat. I also didn't trim them since it was their 1st year. Not sure if that was a mistake either. I really need to research more I thing lol.
How are the blackberry plants doing this year?! I am in zone 8a/b in Williamson County, Texas. I would looove to plant blackberries (thornless of course haha). Also, Ouachita =Wah-shee-ta (my in-laws live near there haha).
omg THANK YOU for the pronunciation!! They're doing really well, I pruned a couple of them to literal death like a newbie in the fall so I lost a couple but that was gardener error. The other ones are THRIVING.
MMM fresh blackberries! Delicious. There is a wild bunch on my fence with the meanest thorns you have ever seen, even the leaves are spiky!
the leaves?! that is wild!!
I grew up eating wild blackberries in Texas- they are delicious! Can’t wait to see what you plant next!
Ahhh yes they are so fun to find out here!
