I hear people clapping at the end of the first section. It doesn’t bother me, it simply means that fresh ears are hearing a masterpiece! I hope they appreciated this performance!! Great work!

I attended a concert (Dvork New World Symphony,) where after the first mvt everybody clapped. Ok. After the second, everybody clapped. Uh... After the third movement, everybody clapped. Finally, after the fourth and final movement, everybody had gotten the idea--and nobody clapped!. The conductor turned around and said, OK, Now! And the audience went wild.

@@nedcrouch3202 Funny! I think clapping after movements is perfectly sensible. This unnatural silence at the end of a dramatic first movement (say, Brahms Piano Concerto 1) is ridiculous, and wasn't always this way. Even in opera, we applaud at the end of certain arias. Why not do that when movements are finished?

Ravel wrote the alborada as one of his "miroirs' for piano, then orchestrated it in a particularly brillant manner. Having orchestrated the central recitative for bassoon with divised strings is especially moving.

In my top 10 favorite orchestral showpieces. It is so bizarre, because the gracioso is a "jester" with all the amusing Spanish sounds, yet Ravel's masterful piece hints at some kind of romantic and sinister subtext that is creepy.

One of my absolute faves as well. Right now I can't come up with words to describe it . . But he really knows how to depict Spanish culture in alluring ways. His mom was Spanish and I believe he grew up in the Pyrenees area of France which is I believe Spain influenced . .

Aha! You saw it too. Ok, maybe it's fun to focus the camera on attractive females in the orchestra, but it can prove to be an embarrassing moment for them, as well as the cameraman. I once played in the cello section of an orchestra with a stand partner who did not play very well. The cameramen kept focusing on her because she was a blonde, but her fingers moved in all the wrong directions when they moved at all, and her bow slid hither and yon. All of this was televised. Hmm...
