  • Full Heat Replay of Kelly Slater vs Kauli Vaast at the Outerknown Tahiti Pro - Semifinals
The most critical wave in the world is now somehow more extreme than ever. Added to the mutant barrels, committed drops, and razor-sharp reef is the fact that Teahupo’o serves as the last fight for the WSL Final 5. The women get their first shot at the famed barrel in 16 years and the world’s best surfers get one last chance to lay it all on the line for a spot in the Rip Curl WSL Finals.

Feel for Kelly, this heat is one he won't forget even though just making it to the semis in this contest was a big mountain to climb. Pretty much assumed Kauli would take it, he's phenomenal, pride of Tahiti and he now he has the honor of a 2nd in a CT event, taking out the Greatest surfer Of All Time. Would have liked to have seen this matchup in full size waves. Really had to expect Kauli to pull it off in sub par conditions on his home break. Great surfing though! For those dogging the numbers on the switch tube, I disagree. If he had ridden it on his feet that's one thing, riding it out on his knee/shin with the rear foot straight up, not worth full points in my mind.

My take is that the local guys are ohana with Kelly for 30+ years. For Kauli to make it that far in the event, Kelly wanted him to win and supported that by laying down. There's also the business politics, can the Outerknown owner win the Outerknown contest? Kelly's only mistake was not making it look a little more believable.

Kelly surfed like a 50 year old man, slow slow unaware, no fire looked tire and old, compared to a 20 year old young lion and hungry

When he is still spanking alot of surfers on tour and still fun to watch when the waves are pumping, why retire unless your over it.
