Sightseeing Sally, you did a great job with all of your info. Settlers Park used to be called Monkeys Island. I don't think that was the official name for it but that's what we called it growing up, probably because it was always full of Gen X'rs that were told to get lost & go play :) I will say it was a great place to grow up & we did have a lot of fun but You all don't want to really live there... When I grew up & started going to other places I realized there are WAY too many Judgmental Uppity SNOBS there. Yes, they have a few great places like the Norbert & a few others but most places end up closing because they can't keep customers :( Just My opinion. I genuinely didn't expect a mention of my little girl 🖤😢 woah. thanks, Sally. Pippin (my cat) was diagnosed with cancer in June and I spent the whole summer nursing her while working full time, knowing that she'd be leaving this world soon. She always knew (even before she fell ill) when I watched exploration videos (like your channel) that I was calm, so it calmed her down too. She was my guide and my light for 12 years, changing who I am as a person. I'm glad to have helped you and Marty in some small way in return for entertaining both my little girl and I.
You’re welcome Chris. Please accept my sincere condolences for the loss of your sweet Pippin. And thank you again for tipping our trip jar. Marty and I really appreciate your generosity.
Check out Watertown Wisconsin. Authentically old, charming, old shops, beautiful Main Street, several historic neighborhoods including the Octagon House and the Jesse Stone house. Just gorgeous!
West Bend used to produce a lot of small appliances and they were sold all over the USA and beyond. The West Bend Company was a West Bend, Wisconsin, company from 1911 to 2001. The West Bend Company manufactured aluminum cookware and electrical appliances, but also made two-stroke cycle engines, including outboard boat motors. In 2001, Regal Ware, Inc. of Kewaskum, Wisconsin, acquired certain assets of the West Bend Company. In 2003, Regal Ware sold the Small Kitchen Appliance Division of the West Bend Company to Focus Products Group LLC. The Small Kitchen Appliance Division is now known as West Bend Housewares. Regal Ware retained the West Bend Cookware Division and product lines of the West Bend Company; and continues to manufacture the cookware products in West Bend and Kewaskum, Wisconsin, under the brand names Lifetime and Royal Queen. This represents more than 100 years of continuous manufacture of West Bend Cookware product lines in West Bend, Wisconsin.
Really enjoyed your trip to West Bend ! The story telling is great Sally & like it when Marty chimes in with his attention to details. Hope everything is going good for you 2 ! 😎
I'm from West Bend, born and raised. It's easy to take for granted all the history here. You've hit on a lot, but there is so much more. As for taverns, until recently, I owned one in downtown that is in a multi-tenant building known as the Lemke Building that was built in 1896. The space I occupied has always been a tavern since that time. Numerous tavernkeepers but always a tavern. The historical society has photographs showing it from 1896 with beer barrels lining the sidewalk. Next door was a livery stable and carriage house as the tavern was a main stopping point in downtown for people traveling to and from Milwaukee. Come back when the construction is done in late October of 2023. The downtown is not nearly as slow as seen in this video. Some businesses are closed temporarily while many others remain open. I highly recommend The Norbert and its sister restaurant, The Orville. Also, make sure to go inside The Bend. That's the theater you highlighted from the outside. recently renovated to what it looked like in 1929. Its acoustics and sound system are amazing. Thanks for a great video!
Thank you for the video. I have lived in West Bend for 14 years. You taught me a lot. It's funny, I told a friend of mine earlier this week that I wanted to check out West Bends history. I have done genealogy for over 30 years but can't get out due to double above the knee the and other problems. So I live vicariously through you and others. Again, thank you so much!!
My folks both grew up in El Paso, a small spot in Pierce County WI. It will always be my favorite spot in the world since both sets of my grandparents lived there. I can close my eyes and still smell the wonderful aroma of drying hay, see the fireflies, and watch the cows contentedly chewing their cud. Peace and quiet!
Did a cross country trip back in 2005 from California . Part of the trip was from West Virginia to Alpena, Michigan. Then through the Upper Peninsula through Escanaba to Green Bay then finally to Reedsburg, Wi. Thoroughly enjoyed going through all the old towns in between. Have lots of fond memories of that trip.

Hi Sally, a born & raised Bender here! Our downtown area is finishing up and reopening the first weekend of November! I definitely recommend coming out to see it again during the holiday season because it is GORGEOUS! Please promote our downtown businesses too because they’re struggling so much 😢 we’ve lost a couple businesses because of how badly the closure has affected them.
@@SightseeingSally Right, not far from Oconomowoc. It’s a cute town if you’re down that way again. I was in Jefferson, WI today for the Sheep and Wool Festival. I think it’s bigger than the one I’ve been to in the Twin Cities/MN. Lots of vendors with different wool or wool/sheep themed items for sale. There were sheep herding trials to watch and some lambs that were born this weekend. I’ll go earlier in the day next year, it was pretty crowded by the time I left.
More and more "old town" areas are being revitalized. We went to malls as kids but now we want the old buildings and small businesses. The city is smart to spruce it up.
West Bend was served by the Chicago and Northwestern Railway between Green Bay and Milwaukee. Final run of the remaining Green Bay based passenger trains, between Green Bay and Milwaukee, was made on April 30, 1971.and trackage between West Bend and Fond du Lac in 2003.
An exceptionally fine job on this posting. Not only does it seem to be comprehensive but actually makes me want to visit, and I'm afraid I gotta say, WI is not high on my list of places to revisit. (MY last time there was in mid-winter and less than comfortable). I appreciate the time and effort it took to get this raw video, and especially the time and effort it took to make it so watchable. The town is really well preserved and cared for, and that says a lot about the people who live there and care for it.

My ancestors came in 1849 from Saxonie, following a Farmers’ Rebellion. There were five couples, but three of them fled after a harsh winter near Erler’s Lake (Yahr County Park). The remaining brothers homesteaded on opposite sides of what is now Orchard Valley Road, where my family remained until 1956. The land on both farms is now owned by the Chris and Tracy Elbe Family. Following a fire, our home was razed, since the damage to the fieldstone and masonry foundation made it uninhabitable. Dad and I were graciously invited to see it before it was torn down, and were very quiet on the way home. Five generations of Gruhle Families had lived there.
I always wanted to own an old farm house, I always find them fascinating. There is a lot of them left empty around where I live (Forestville) but I’m getting to old to move 50 years of memories 😂😂😂
