Me too Im looking for the session where uncle larry played a Christie McVie song 🎵 the day she passed . What an incredible song for an enigmatic performer by a humble session man .❤
always fun to go back to these old ones, especially cool to hear you talk about never having made a solo album. glad to see that come to fruition twice already in a couple years. hope you're finding artistic satisfaction and general satisfaction in your life Tom. I really appreciate all the time and wisdom you've given to us.
Thanks so much for these man! I've been talking with people about this for years waiting for you to do something like this. It's not just about the playing, it's the experience, what you have learned after years of playing on thousands of tunes at the highest level, the totality of music as whole and how to play for the song and not for the glory. Its what every musician needs to hear. So much more than just guitar. Pure inspiration! Thanks again, speaking for myself and thousands of others I imagine, I hope you keep going with this these life lessons for guitar, they are really great!!
Call it whatever the heck you want, man. I'm just super stoked to have this killer content! Haven't practiced this much in years. So thanks, Tom. I'm stoked to watch more!
Singers, pianist and other musicians should know that the guitarist solo and jamming is what many listeners are waiting for. Don't ever underestimate the popularity of the guitar. I don't play I'm a professional listener. JMO
“Is it better with what I’m doing or is it better when I stop?” That should be tattooed on every musician’s right hand...also, as a songwriter, thanks for talking about the target emotion. I call it the true north.
You are my new favorite person/guitar player that I probably will never meet. Typically I do not comment on any social media but your content is awesome. Thanks and stay safe.
Sorry for the late reply as I'm watching these in reverse order. Great stuff!. Back in the 70's when I learning the business an old Nashville player told me.."hoss, sometimes it ain't what you play, but what you don't play". (lol) I never forgot that.
You’re so right man. Piano players have such a vast grasp of arrangement and harmony and color, that’s why they’re usually the musical director in a group or the leader on a session date. And yet they don’t have the palette of touch expression and individuality that a guitar player has with their vibrato, bends and articulation. I think we all picked the right instrument guys and gals! Btw I love organ lines, I used to listen to and plunder guys like Jimmy Smith liberally.
Diggin' the Sun Valley shirt, Tom. Definitely my favorite sounding shirt of yours. Great tone. "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture."
Watching this four years later and it’s just so good. One of the few things that came from vivid is Home Skoolin! Tommy B. the Sloven guitar man from Cleveland!
I like this kind of Homeschoolin’ 😊🎸👍. I like the therm old musician wisdom you talk about. Here is some old musician wisdom that I picked up along the way. One of my old guitar teachers once told me: Remember to play the pauses...It gives space to all the cool licks.
if you're struggling with the 4 chord at 14:14 - he's playing both the 6th and the 7th notes rather than just one or the other: from the 5th string to 1st string as follows - C, A, Bb, E. This is not unlike the sus lesson from his earlier vid.
Great video, Tom. Glad to see Lenny Breau get a mention; he's a beautiful musician. A lot of his chordal ideas were inspired by Bill Evans so it all ties back to what you're saying with regards to piano players and their harmonic capabilities.
Absolutely matches my experience in years of doing sessions. You're a service man, a psychologist and a therapist. A friend referred to my old Bob Bradshaw rack as a vending machine and he was right. You're there to interpret someone else's vision and you have to get inside their head. Nothing like doing music for a political ad campaign and having a musically clueless campaign manager and media consultant try to give you musical direction. Tom is truth telling here. I still have those old Session Man MySpace posts archived somewhere. Priceless!
Tricks and tools of the trade. Pleasing strangers; how a meter, tempo, harmony and timing/the relationship of chords, melodies and how they lay upon and inform the other- what emotion these artists are trying to hook you with. Do you have worry about overtaking the tune….or do some artists want you to hook them? I especially love a great song where the lyrics are a juxtaposition from what the music is conveying and it’s a master deception. “Pianists are the quarterbacks of music” quote of the day. This may have been your most insightful video. I love this.
Hey Tom, I love your wisdom on music without even playing a note. You have started me thinking about so much more just mechanical/muscle memory . Awesome job and thank your wisdom and bad ass licks.
@13:27 :) the most amazing thing about Lenny in that video is he’s 20 years old in that video. That just makes my head spin, lol what a talent. Awesome video Tom. Cheers!
I have to concentrate to know what a Dominant 9 is... I know instantly what target the emotion means. This is why 'homeschoolin'' is important to me. Your conversational approach is needed in the ADHD world of RUclips. There are plenty of 'what' channels... I am grateful for the 'why'. Thanks Tom... stay well.
Where have you been? I just discovered "homeskoolin'" from a link in a vid for an ad for a Silvertone guitar on Reverb. THIS is the kind of thing youtube is so good for...it's like sittin' with a big brother, hanging out and watching him play. PLUS, there's the 50% speed control and the ability to go back and go back and go back. I came in on last week's installment, but I'm back at no. 1 and I'm gonna work through them all...guitar in hand, of course. Thanks for the inspiration and the demonstration. Big UPS to you, Tom.
I just came back here to watch this again and I realized that this was the best lesson that you ever gave us ! That was like getting 25 years experience in 20 minutes !
The earned wisdom man, the day we all learned about the Importance of the silence between the notes. Really enjoy the work you’re doing here, grab a cuppa coffee and listen to some wisdom and some good tunes, thanks man.
Oh boy. I have a lessons playlist. There are players i add a couple lessons to that list. From your stuff i can't pick. It gets a seperate playlist. All of it. It's all that amazing. Thank you so much man.
Keep up the great content Tom. Much appreciated respite from all the bad news. I binge watched all of your corona diaries at 3 in the morning the other day. You’re helping us get through this. Thanks.
I have never made 3 comments in a row on you tube ! This is a first ! Yes h blew my mind with those 3 note chord voicings! Just beautiful. I have been experimenting with making up my own chord shapes using chord formulas and this just arrived at the PERFECT time ! Wow synchronicity at work !

Nice chapters. But don't skip out on that session man part. He gives some important wisdom on playing with other people. "Sometimes silence is what the song needs". "Frame the vocalist"
Tom, I somehow (FB of course) ran into your channel and instantly became a fan. Your tone/touch/feel is second to none. Will now try to absorb everything u have to offer via YT! Greetings from Slovenia
Hey Tom. Started watching about a month ago now. These videos have been kicking my ass. Keep up the awesome stuff. Thanks for making us all better players Man. 🤘🏻
Three years later.. going back to the beginning. Still gold
Me too
Im looking for the session where uncle larry played a Christie McVie song 🎵 the day she passed . What an incredible song for an enigmatic performer by a humble session man .❤
Same! I randomly thought of this reverb pedal rec and came on back. 17:26
Love those organ triads!
And all guitarist on planet stop what they are doing and tune in! Tom you are the best thing on the internet right now bud
highly accurate
💯 🎯🎯🎯
Truth
I have been in a lull for a couple months in my playing and just discovered Tom on RUclips tonight. Feeling inspired again! Thank you!
Four years later he still is the best thing on the internet👍
Finding a teacher that’s a session guy is like finding gold
THIS.
My teacher is a session player. I guess I lucked out.
What great playing!! Whoa, so inspiring. Awesome Tom!!!!

Amen to that
Well said @papastache102. Well said my friend.
Brett Papa sent me
Robert Baker, Papastache are followers and posting. Some of the most recognizable YT guitar teachers of fanboys. I'm glad I'm here.
Tom also benefits, too. He gets to stretch out and play like HE wants to play, not what the song or producer needs.
This is the best thing to happen to guitarist on RUclips In a long time. Just hope that this continues for a long, long time.
"Talking about music is like dancing about architecture." - Thelonious Monk. I always liked that quote, finally got a chance to use it . . .
In reference to 5:14 . . .
I’ve never felt 18 minutes going so fast in my entire life.
It’s like no matter what you do you can never bore me for a second.
Tom got me thru the pandemic, going back even before Homeskoolin’ #1.
"Exploring the ancient link between a session man and a plumber." Love it!!!!
As “the singer” in most situations, this is gold. It’s also why you work all the time.
Call it whatever the heck you want, man. I'm just super stoked to have this killer content! Haven't practiced this much in years. So thanks, Tom. I'm stoked to watch more!
Exactly that.
+1 - Thanks Tom!
+2 - Thanks Tom!
Been watching you since you started this thing # watching old ones now. Just because they are so good.
Just revisiting Episode 1. Great stuff. Can't remember where I jumped in but I watched this one shortly after and knew I'd be back.
Singers, pianist and other musicians should know that the guitarist solo and jamming is what many listeners are waiting for. Don't ever underestimate the popularity of the guitar. I don't play I'm a professional listener. JMO
I remember the ‘Session Man is like being a Plumber’ story from way back. Funny guy
Going back to see # 1. It’s been a great ride...and you’ve inspired me to buy way too much equipment. Thank you Uncle Larry!
“Is it better with what I’m doing or is it better when I stop?” That should be tattooed on every musician’s right hand...also, as a songwriter, thanks for talking about the target emotion. I call it the true north.
I agree..."slience is a chord too"... Too many musicians don't know this. Enjoying your videos.
You are my new favorite person/guitar player that I probably will never meet. Typically I do not comment on any social media but your content is awesome. Thanks and stay safe.
Just discovered this channel, so happy I did.
Sorry for the late reply as I'm watching these in reverse order. Great stuff!. Back in the 70's when I learning the business an old Nashville player told me.."hoss, sometimes it ain't what you play, but what you don't play". (lol) I never forgot that.

True. The ideal is to learn music theory and composition on a piano and use the guitar for pure expression
Diggin' the Sun Valley shirt, Tom. Definitely my favorite sounding shirt of yours. Great tone.
"Talking about music is like dancing about architecture."
Man, that organ inspired stuff is just incredible. This channel of yours is such a treasure trove of cool stuff. 🙏
Love you Buk! You’re still the guy from high school 30yrars ago. Blessings to you and Sarah!
Came to check out what you were up to on here, accidentally had my player on 1.5x speed and was like DAMN, Tom is comin' in hot!
Watching this four years later and it’s just so good. One of the few things that came from vivid is Home Skoolin! Tommy B. the Sloven guitar man from Cleveland!
Great. Came in at Homeskoolin 87 and came straight here. Subscribed. Awesome.
Welcome aboard mate....before Homeskoolin there was 30 some volumes of “corona lessons”...
Yep, you have to view the entire catalog because there’s some great flute playing tucked away.
We all droolin' and foolin' and ain't gruellin' wid da homeskoolin'.........thanks Tom.
Marathon time... Gonna watch EVERY episode !!
Tom... you’re perceptive because of where you came from,.. just an AMAZING guy! Xxoo
Your comment on the relationship between piano players and guitarists is hilarious because of how spot on it was LOL
Session men are plomber...... 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 So true...... You make my day Tom!
That intro brought me back to one of my fave old Brit punk/pop bands the Undertones. Those guys were fantastic!
I like this kind of Homeschoolin’ 😊🎸👍. I like the therm old musician wisdom you talk about. Here is some old musician wisdom that I picked up along the way. One of my old guitar teachers once told me: Remember to play the pauses...It gives space to all the cool licks.
That dominate 7th cord exercise at the end blew my mind. I never thought of it that way...
Watching again for the X# time...THANKS BUK!!!

That Gatton Rhythm video was the best!!!! Another great episode.
been watching for about 1.5 yrs. never seen homeskoolin episode 1 before. very well said and played little tommy. thank you for homeskoolin! 🤟
this is one of the coolest videos I've seen in a long time, I feel musically rejuvenated
I don’t drink, but I would kill to have a beer with you and Keith Williams and listen to you both. I wouldn’t say a word.
“Homeschoolin’ “ is perfect! Thanks for everything Tom!
Been playing a long time and this is some of the best advice I have ever heard
Great video, Tom. Glad to see Lenny Breau get a mention; he's a beautiful musician. A lot of his chordal ideas were inspired by Bill Evans so it all ties back to what you're saying with regards to piano players and their harmonic capabilities.
Kind of Blue 4th’s🤘
Dude your sense of humor and honesty are as amazing as your playing. Just found you and I am touched....
"What you play has to frame the vocal" Wowwww...That's super good, bro. This is so helpful!
Absolutely matches my experience in years of doing sessions. You're a service man, a psychologist and a therapist. A friend referred to my old Bob Bradshaw rack as a vending machine and he was right. Wow, if every episode you do is as informative as this, then we're blessed! You kill it Tom!
The one that started it all...THANKS UNCLE LARRY

This may have been your most insightful video. I love this.
I am grateful RUclips exists so things like this can exist. This is some good shit.
Hey Tom, I love your wisdom on music without even playing a note. You have started me thinking about so much more just mechanical/muscle memory . Awesome job and thank your wisdom and bad ass licks.
Brett Shull led me here, so diggin' I got here! Awesome info and playing, Tom!
I bought the Guitar Grimoire books in the 90's and I'm sitting back and chuckling because this is how THOSE books make sense.
@13:27 :) the most amazing thing about Lenny in that video is he’s 20 years old in that video. That just makes my head spin, lol what a talent.
Awesome video Tom. Cheers!
One of the brighter lights in youtube land. Thank you... and cheers from Germany!

Man, Tom dropped a lot of gems in this one. Thanks Tom, such good wisdom from a session pro!

Awesome info, thanks for starting your channel and thanks to Tim Pierce for his video with you. Looking forward to more 👍🏻
Don't worry about just talking man. Your wisdom is valuable.
The quarterback and caveman analogy was hysterical. You're (basically) right!! Man, that's funny!
Your an amazing inspiration. Your knowledge and wisdom is priceless to many aspiring musicians.
You’re Mike Bloomfield and Peter Sellers combined. A rare commodity of passion in a technical job. Mind blowing. I’m hooked.
Love the Danny Gatton "2 note wonder" - Great lesson, thanks!!
Suddenly the my favorite channel. Thank you for taking the time to feed us.
Hey Tom, these volumes are just great. I'm just starting to go through them again and I'm getting so much more! Fantastic. Thanks so much. Jeff
A great piano player once told me "the bigger the band, the smaller your chords." Great advice.
.. We appreciate you Tom ....cheers 👍
That's a great session of Homeschoolin' right there - Thanks Tom!
Oh boy. I have a lessons playlist. There are players i add a couple lessons to that list. From your stuff i can't pick. It gets a seperate playlist. All of it. It's all that amazing. Thank you so much man.
Best convo about piano players ever. Super funny but so true. Love these vids. Thanks so much for doing them. So candid.
Keep up the great content Tom. Much appreciated respite from all the bad news. I binge watched all of your corona diaries at 3 in the morning the other day. You’re helping us get through this. Thanks.
Forgot to mention that I love these videos. Appreciate it Tom.
Perfect football analogy. Very illuminating. Wisdom takes time. Thank you for imparting yours. Love it!
the studio concepts/anecdotes/advice is my favorite part of these videos
I have never made 3 comments in a row on you tube ! This is a first ! Yes h blew my mind with those 3 note chord voicings! Just beautiful. I have been experimenting with making up my own chord shapes using chord formulas and this just arrived at the PERFECT time ! Wow synchronicity at work !

Geeze... This is pure platinum.
Had to come back watch the first one of the Home Skoolin. Good luck with the return to session time Tom 👍
