💚 And as always, a huge thank you goes out to The Brotherhood: / brothersmake
We were invited to take part in RUclips Makers Secret Santa! We decided to test out whether waste PLA from 3D printers can be recycled and turned into new objects. So after attempting a few smaller things, we made a solid infinity gauntlet for 3D Printing Pro - Emily the Engineer. Plus, Ruth and Shawn from Kids Invent Stuff made us a giant ice cream cannon out of an old traffic cone and we shot it at Matt!

Honest question from 🇺🇸!
What do you call a "jumper" in 🇬🇧?
Because over here, what we call a "jumper" is women's overalls 😂😭😂
The video started with you guys talking about making filament for 3d printing out of scrap plastic, but you never did make any filaments.
there's a guy on youtube, I forget his name, who's developing a filament extrusion system to use cheaper pla (and maybe reuse scrap? can't remember) might be worth looking into
so awesome seeing how you guys did this!! Thank yall so much :) definitely one of the coolest things I’ve ever received!
You are more than welcome - it may not squirt ketchup quite as well as the one you made, but we're super glad you liked it anyway! 🙌🏼
Emily your is videos are hilarious, I'm glad the Brothers led me to you.
9:51 for slow readers like me it said "Drippin' Swagoo" lol
I love ur channel
I'm especially a big fan of gold skulls. Well done!
Haha thought you might like that! Thanks Ali! 💀
Somehow, the fact that Ali Spagnola likes gold skulls is not at all surprising.
But yours is actual gold.
The infinity gauntlet broken up like that actually looked pretty cool... it's the sort of thing you'd expect to find in Shield's evidence vault or something.
my thoughts too
Yeah, with a tad bit of distressing it looks great and ties together!
I was thinking anduril
The thing I love the most about the YT makers secret Santa is that I get to find amazing channels such as this!
Amazing! Glad to have ya!
Glad to be here! Your channel seems to be amazing, and you guys seem to be amazing!!!
Thank you! ❤️
I really appreciate your style of going through the early testing and learning stages and clearly communicating what you tried and what you learned at each stage!!
I kind of liked the crumbled look of the gauntlet before you reassembled it it looked like a found relic.
Maybe if that happens again you can connect the pieces with small rods, leaving a small gap between each piece. That way it looks like it's a frozen moment in time of the gauntlet exploding/crumbling.
Awesome video, love this sort of thing as a 3D printing nerd. For future reference, PLA has a glass transition temperature of around 55 degrees C, so starts going soft around there. Generally making it not always appropriate for practical projects - visual/display stuff is always cool though. PLA is generally printed between 190 and 210 degrees.
That icecream cannon worked so well! Love the Secret Santa rotations! =)
This is my first video that I’ve seen of yours(making the secret Santa loop) but I love how practical and achievable you make these recycling projects, showing that you just got a blender for ten pounds at a second hand store is so awesome!!!
I love how the thumbnail trash was mostly scraps/supports but then included a whole benchy. 😂
The thing every 3D printer has but never needs!
Thank you for doing this! We have been 3D printing a lot lately, and started doing multi filament, which results in a lot of waste. I tried figuring out this method on my own for the small molds. I appreciate the step by step visual and how you were able to prevent some of the air bubbles.
for anybody curious and can recycke filament back into filament. mica powder is a perfect way to make a solid color filament.
My favorite part about Maker Secret Santa is discovering new channels. You guys are a lot of fun and an easy subscribe. Really enjoyed your build and looking forward to what you make next. Thanks for sharing!
You should have totally rolled with the punches and made it a kind of "busted infinity gauntlet after the snap"
I think you have to use the Ice Cream cannon on whoever in your shop has a birthday. Excellent video. The Secret Santa is always one of my favorites of the year as I get introduced to new makers. Been a fan of yours for ahwile though. keep up the great workk
A true piece of art worthy to be displayed in Asgard :D
Also, that gold dust works sooooooo well!
Another good thing to know is theres a company in the US that takes filament waste as long as you pay for shipping, but they take it for free. I think you can find it if you look up free filament recycling
That's even better than my idea of casting it into a fireplace with some diesel poured on! 👏
Are you familiar with the Japanese concept of Kintsugi? It's where broken pottery is repaired with gold, highlighting the fractures rather than hiding them, embracing flaws and imperfections. I just love the similarities between this practice and your excitement after unmolding and reassembling. You even used gold color in the reassembly process!
I guess that's why plastic is usually injected molded under high pressure, or blow-molded
this would have been a great opportunity to explore the technique of Kintsugi and make the cracks in the repaired gauntlet part of the art.
Cool to see the stuff you're doing in the oven, gives me hope for not having to dump all my PLA scrap into the bin.
I wish the chain was longer than 10 makers or had more chains. Jimmy Diresta, Michael Cthulhu, Jazza, Nerdforge, Bobby Duke etc. are my favourite YT'ers.
Jimmy has taken part before. Would be great to have some of those names involved!
With all the progress made in cheap 3d printing, there HAS to be a better, more economical way to recycle waste than the ridiculously expensive commercial machines out there now.
Love that ice cream blaster thing.
Seing it laying in the table in the shot after demolding it looked like a "What If Thanos failed" story art piece.
Could save alot of plastic if you put the mold on something to rotate it around, allowing the molten plastic to flow around the sides of the mold. Keep the center hollow. Looks great tho
harbor freight... $40 should get the large Auger drill bit... get a steel tube with inside diameter just barely larger than the auger... wrap the steel tube with heat tape with thermostat controls on the tube... set bearings on one end with a end plate preventing the pla from getting to the bearings. have an opening in the top of the tube when it is horizontal. establish a hopper over opening... shred your plastic over the hopper,... heat the tube to melting point, chuck drill onto the auger... slowly turn auger in revers to push shredded pla into the tube where it melts and is pushed/extruded out the end of tube into your mold.
You’re describing a basic version of an extrusion machine. We have one of those too :)
Back in 2014, I made an extruder that uses recycled plastic waste to make all my 3d printer filament.
I wish the shredder crunching sounds were played instead of music.
Its like Im watching the slowmo guys. Only both guys changed clothing, changed the roll they act out, and changed wich set of skills they have.
But more importand: Great video, ill be watching more of this channel
Haha love the slowmo guys! Thanks for watching 👍🏽
I MADE THE FULL CIRCLE ENDING HERE!
Would guys try making an ergonomic crochet hook? Could be a cool ideia!
Artifacts like that always get "weathered". I think some people "weather" things too much, but yours is very naturally weathered.
The maker loop was a fantastic idea!
This deserves a slow mo .... I love the puff of smoke 💨 on the right side!! LoL 20:31
@BrothersMake you all need to recycle some plastic to make some shoes like the ones you wear in this video if you haven't already done it
Would be cool if you had a mold of oversized lego bricks so you could accumulate and build something over a year.
The Ice Cream Blaster is totally what 6yr old me would have wished for. I'm a 50+ yr old Engineer now and I still want one. Santa you watching YT? Hint?
i think if i had been molding the glove, it be cool to pour the liquid silicon over the glove, perhaps begin filling it, so the internal is solid, and then pour over the outside, needs a descent base, then you con fill the outer silicon glove with liquid plastic and the slip that over the inner solid silicon mold, wait till cool and peel apart - but still an interesting project - i guess the volume of the original silicon block mold absorbed the heat, deflected it etc to prevent the plastic melting
but hey i have learnt that you can reuse plastic waste from 3d printing, cool
but i think for some reason i might be more interested in your wonderful shredder, i need something perhaps 2-3 times bigger, i have a mass of fiberglass i need to break down which i want to make into a useable filler paste
I love the thought of all this weird stuff going through customs
Not quite sure where you guys are based out of but there’s a fabric/textiles company in Amsterdam NY (Mohawk Fabric Company) that uses Polypropylene tubes in autoclave machines that, once they’re used once, are trash.
A local school once tried to start a recycling project to repurpose the tubes or recycle them but it never got off the ground. I think it would be GREAT for you guys, if it’s logistically possible
I think it would be SO COOL to try to recycle plastic too! Which type (number) did you say shrinks when it cools? I would like to try molding some boards, to then try to build steps for the house!
I love the skulls and the whole process! Bravo!
5:25 Why does that look so appetizing...
I'm definitely going to play with silicone molding for all my scrap prints now... cast Benchy anyone?
I love the imperfection, it makes it look battle-worn.
loved the vid! a mate & I were talking about recycling pla only a week ago. The gloved hand turned oit awesome. That ice cream cannon ROCKED!
10:12 what is that magic box to check if it's PLA? 😮
Love this series, so glad you were a part of its tradition!
just curious, what setup did you use to check if its pla or abs etc.?
was it an home made device or something bought, i have not seen it before :)
20:47 I’ve looked like this after many weekends
Uncle Jessy did a similar video to this a few months back . Worth checking out. Keep up the good work guys 👍
Yummo, micro plastic smoothie 😂. But really though this is so cool. Ive been trying to make makers goo out if d-lemonine and Styrofoam
What’s that device for identifying the material? I’m really curious
Hey what would happen if you had a paint stripper pointing down in to the silicone moulds n left heat it for a bit then throw in the shredded plastic and kept adding more once it had become a constant puddle fusion with the layer beneath it? in any case i appreciate you stepping outside your comfort zones n giving this a shot! now you can make plastic toys whats to stop you from becoming action figures! ;)
10:23 who else was reminded of Benicio del Toro's death scene in Licence to Kill (1989)? 😯
Why not use a heat gun to melt the plastic in the mold, just ad a little at a time and apply heat until it melts.
Such a cool way to recycle plastic! The gold looks so cool! Great video!
I think you should use the new ice cream gun every time you add new patreons to the wall
Haha, now THERE’S an idea!
How do you eliminate static electricity while shredding and injecting?
If you're curious about recycling PLA filament then give the CNC kitchen a lookie-see. ruclips.net/video/BT04glGDjB4/видео.html They've been experimenting with PLA recycling and have one of those expensive devices, but they recently tested a cheap device that seems to work really well also. The biggest issue they've ran into has been old filament absorbing water, and foreign material. Edit: Regarding the mica powder, as long as the grains are smaller than 0.4mm then you're fine. That's the typical printer nozzle size. If you make PLA with anything that's larger than 0.4mm in it, then you can cause a clog.
That should be mass produced for christmas next year, you/they'd make a fortune
Not a Super Soaker - A Super Ice Creamer
the Bearded One must take revenge.
Thought on the air bubbles in the bigger pieces of plastic melted in the oven - that could be fixed with the baking macarons solution. When baking macaroons, before you put it in the oven you tap the bottom of the pan a few times on the tabletop to bring the bubbles to the top and pop themselves. Here's where it probably isn't an easy idea but might totally already exist, something you could put below it in the oven to just tap the bottom a few times while its melting. Or take it out of the oven every so often and tap the bottom yourself. You can see the baker in this Try Guys video explaining it and then Keith mentions it too: ruclips.net/video/oghoRsE1rDw/видео.html
Guys please make a 3D printer from scratch. I just waiting for that from you...and using the bottles make filaments.❤
Can u pls make a Sneaker Outsole from waste plastic using Heat press Machine and a Mole
2:06 im curious if the editor purposely made you point right to emily just before the reveal there hahaha
Commercial before this was for a 3D printer. 😂
On another note... they made Keyboards. New idea for recycling?🤔
11:28 trying to lift Thors hammer 😂
Hi there. Amazing video.❤
Question tho. Can other types of plastics like HDPE or PP once shredded up be placed into a silicone mold and heated up ?
Can you please make cap guns or bb guns ?
Ok, im definitely going to make all my 1/12 scale trees out of recycled plastic from now on… im also thinking about how big of a blob of plastic i can get, to make a mountain side😈
What is the name/brand of that machine that can detect what kind of plastic it is?
I didn't think the group used sponsors for the secret santa series... But my memory sucks so I'm probably wrong lol
I'm only half way through, but so far it seems the plan is to do a lot of work to make the thing they cut apart to make the mold in the first place.
Oh, the glove of PLAnos
Where can I sand bottle lids too
Most people don't need a VPN. It does not improve security. Your antivirus is plenty enough. If that doesn't find the virus neiterh will Nord.
That is where you’re wrong
A VPN does in fact improve security but it shouldn’t be used as a substitute for antivirus software.
A VPN is a secure network connection that helps protect a LAN’s data from being observed by outsiders
First - AMAZING video, its inspired me to recycle more of my 3D printing waste! Secondly - whats the jumper that got all messy!? It looks so comfy and practical but I don't recognize the brand
It’s a sweatshirt by Scruffs. And thank you!
@@BrothersMakeoh did you ruin your jumper… you’ve barely mentioned it 😂😂
Yes it was my NEW JUMPER! 😅
Los moldes de calavera cómo está hecho de silicona ? Cómo por favor gracias
9:50 CZECH
Please tell me you are selling the sheets you are about to make, I would be interested in recycled sheets 4-6 mm thick.
There are also a lot of other sources for PLA - like caps of plastic bottles.
Are bottle caps PLA where you are? They are mostly ABS in Australia.
Bottle tops almost always HDPE or PP in the UK.
@@BrothersMake I guess you are correct. I do recall someone melting the colorful bottle caps and making things out of them. What about the larger bottle tops like Orange Juice and Almond Milk made of?
Just a question:
I was watching an Ocean Cleanup (RUclips) film, and noticed they had recovered a large nylon (?) fishing net.
Just wondering, .. if you obtained some of this discarded netting (presumably made of Nylon or similar), could you find a way to turn it into 3d printer filament, or other useful stuff?
Just enquiring.
Why did you sort it by colour and then shred all together? 😂
We sorted by colour for the gems and other future projects. We used the leftover mixed PLA for the gauntlet since we were colouring it anyway
New subscriber having just watched your video on making glasses, and ironing the plastic bags for the chair, thoroughly enjoyed both, and appreciate the amount of work put in to produce them, superb. Hope you don’t mind my offering of some suggestions. Could it or would it be possible for you to make groundsheets, tarps, hammock's, fly sheets and such, for camping?. Or to use as much plastic as possible, per item, is there a way of bonding your ironed sheets of plastic bags together, hopefully, allowing you to make larger items, such as to make a kayak, or canoe, solid or folding, not sure inflatable would work, crazy idea I know, however, if one worked out, maybe produce both, also make the paddles, as well as tents and gazebo’s, ordinary and patio umbrellas, so many things can be done. Again hope you don’t mind, wish you the very best for Xmas and the New Year, 👍🥃.
Love the suggestions! We’re actually planning a camping video for the spring/summer when the weathers a bit warmer and we’re going to attempt a tent made from recycled material. Cheers!
@@BrothersMake Sounds very interesting, look forward to seeing it, may have problems with condensation, and fire or flame resistant, however, I’m sure you are aware of these facts, and more, all the very best🍻.
Is it possible to use silicon molds with HDPE?
Brother what is that shoes mold?? Is that made up of silicon??
that skull is sick
Hey please tell me how much is your mold press and how i can get one
Small note, you should add the unit of temperature next time (215 Celsius is way different than 215 Fahrenheit)
Awesome work
How tf does it know whether it's PLA just by looking at it!?
It’s our PlasTell plastic scanner - InfraRed Spectroscopy
@@BrothersMake Oh, wow, thanks. I'm new, so I'll have to watch a bit through the backlog of your channel.
We have a video where we used it in a bit more detail called ‘How to Tell if a Piece of Plastic is Recyclable’
@@BrothersMake Will certainly watch it.
Hope it helps bud, happy holidays!
Will it blend?
whats the release agent pls
these guys use the same blender and panini press as me wth XD
0:23 Expired filament?! 😵 How does plastic expire?
PLA can quite easily become unusable for 3D printing due to UV exposure/humidity levels
Nice one 👍 you should send Colin a skull 💀 he could make it in to a gear knob for his Dellorean !
Haha nice idea!
