Human frailties and ups and downs of early marriage poignantly portrayed by Jimmy Stewart and Carol Lombard, in honest common everyday situations. The old movies packed a punch without all the special effects and hoopla (and propaganda). I love the honesty of this movie.

I had to look up the film year after the lines stated, “Honeymooning via Normandy”. I thought it odd that movies would mention it as a honeymooning destination. However, the year was 1939. What an ironic foreshadow for what was to come. 🇺🇸 😢❤

In 1941 Jim Stewart was drafted into the Air Force two years after this 1939 movie. On July 23rd, 1959 Jimmy was promoted to brigadier general. During the Vietnam War he flew as a observer in a B-52 during a mission called an Arc Light bombing in February 1966.

He was considered the greatest actor of his generation. He went on to fly 20 missions in a war that where air crews were expected to be killed between 8 and 12 missions. After the war, he resumed acting, but this time his acting was different.
Back then most men never went into psychiatric counseling or saw a therapist after the war, they just returned to their lives, as if nothing happened, but one could see the horrors of war that Stewart experienced he was able to put into his acting and you see it when he plays George Bailey in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ and he’s in the bar scene where he asks “God if you’re up there and you can hear me let me know.”
That was a man whose face had seen the horrors of war.

This was very typical of the movies Jimmy Stewart made before the war. He made Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, Philadelphia Story in 1940. He played the good guy role in the pre-war movies. I think It's a Wonderful Life was his first movie that was very serious and required a different kind of acting. It was made in 1946, not long after he returned from war. I read his biography and looks like he suffered from PTSD which might account for the very emotional character he played. He made 4 great movies with Alfred Hitchcock in the following years. The post-war Jimmy Stewart movies were far superior to his pre-war movies. Vertigo and Rear Window were great movies if you like Hitchcock movies. Grace Kelly was his co-star in Rear Window.
