  • In the mid-1990's, Kevin Sullivan was tasked with creating a force designed to get Hulk Hogan cheered by the WCW fans. He wasn't successful, but he sure seemed to have fun trying! Brian Zane takes a look at the ill-fated Dungeon of Doom!

      The only logical explanation for Hogan's dialogue in that segment is if The Taskmaster wrote him a note saying: "Hey Hulk, come by the Dungeon Of Doom later and we'll hang out; there's plenty of Hulkamaniacs and hot water, and you've definitely been here before."
      Not originally my comment, but it's so good, it's impossible not to repost it.

    Kevin Sullivan does have a good reason for the Dungeon existing; by giving Hogan a group of cartoonish characters to beat over and over again, it made Hogan trust Sullivan so when it came time for Hogan to lose the WCW title, Hogan would actually do it.

      Maybe they didn't think this out. It was one of those "on paper" ideas as far as characters I'm guessing they were either high or confused about how they wanted this storyline to go too cartoonish or too scary, make people laugh or the little Hulkamanics cry because their "hero" hulk hogan was getting destroyed

    • @handsolo1209
      @handsolo1209 6 лет назад +7

      No, WCW tried to use the 1980s Hulkamania formula on a fanbase that hated that formula and liked rasslin, hence they were WCW fans and not WWF fans. They did it to try and get Hogan over with the new fanbase, not to compete with WWF's old fanbase.

    • @handsolo1209
      @handsolo1209 6 лет назад +2

      DejaVoodooDoll - They wanted Hogan to get over with the current WCW fans as well as attract new sponsors and viewers. "Workrate" as you put it is what allows marks to elevate crap like Malenko & Benoit into a false position of actually being stars. Fans of WCW liked the feuds. Sting vs Flair was about how Flair kept screwing Sting and what they did in the ring made sense to that feud. Benoit, etc was the piss break for many people. WCW was always about aggressive blood feuds with compelling storytelling in the ring, not workrate spot monkeys.
      Anyway, I digress, WCW fans did not like Hogan's style and that is why he got booed. For every new fan that came to see WCW because of Hogan, there were 10 who hated WWF.
      I completely understand why they did it, but from a WCW fan's point of view it was the worst they had ever seen when you consider 1 year earlier they had seen Sting vs Vader/Rude/Cactus, Hollywood Blondes, etc. It went from rasslin with guys "really" hating each other (the way they played their part) to silly WWF crap.
      It wasn't to compete with WWF cartoon crap like the OP said though, it was to add to what they already had and attract new fans. It just didn't mesh at all with what the WCW product had always been.

    • @handsolo1209
      @handsolo1209 6 лет назад

      DejaMark - Yes, Benoit was a boring midget who people tuned out for. Pillman was charismatic and therefore people PAID ATTENTION to him, not becasue of some flips and shit, but because of his character connecting with the audience. Dickheads like you think that Malenko vs Saturn would be amazing, but Hogan vs Andre is boring. "No moveste", "in ring work", "-5 stars". Fucking mark.
      WCW was trying to grow by hiring established names to go ALONG SIDE it's won people. Politics play a big part in people getting lost in the shuffle. WCW's misuse of Austin was bad, but WWF used him even worse as The Ringmaster. It was a sheer fluke that he even got to win the KOTR in the first place. I know a mark like you sees little men that are your own size and cums in his pants, but to anyone with a brain, name stars put eyeballs on to the product and then hopefully these new fans see your WCW talent and get to like them too. They miscalculated how much WCW fans hated WWF, but Hogan was worth the gamble. Duggan, etc was jobs for the boys and stank the place out, but they HAD TO MAKE HOGAN HAPPY. Jeez, go and jerk off to Okada and Dave Meltzer.

      Hand Solo is right, to a point. Hogan to WCW was a square peg, but what else were they going to do? Flair, Bischoff and Sullivan were all HEAVILY involved in getting Hogan there-but they already had done Hogan/Flair in WWE and folks didn't buy it then, so when it was done in WCW, folks couldn't accept it either. What was the alternative? WWE was STILL winning the PR war, despite being at low ebb. As a (primarily) WCW fan, it shocking-but inevitable

      @DICK LONG - In my opinion they were piss breaks and they were shit. I can accept 100% that people enjoyed them and that's cool. Any opinion is as valid as another, but I hate marks who think that people like that were better than people like Hogan, etc who actually drew money and therefore must have been better.

      @SuperPikachu Jexs tbf, The Authority wasn't explicitly to get Bryan over. It was to try and remake the magic that was Mr. McMahon as a character with HHH and Steph, and to also give purpose to guys like Big Show and Kane, who were floundering at the time, The New Age Outlaws when they returned, The Shield/Seth Rollins, etc. Bryan was never a part of that plan until Punk left and WWE had to scramble to come up with a new WrestleMania 30 plan.

      @SuperPikachu Jexs for Straight Edge Society.....I guess? I mean, it's weird. Punk never really won in SES, but it wasn't just for one person. They used them to get Rey over, to get Big Show over, to get Taker over upon his return...etc.

    Hey Brian, just want to address a minor error in the video (and OSW made the same one). The Giant was a member of the DoD up until September of 1996, where he switched and joined the nWo. He was only there until December, when he was kicked out of the group to join WCW's main roster and teamed with Lex Luger. He never rejoined the DoD after his initial departure.
