You know when you grow up in the '60s and '70s and the 80s and even in the 90s, you hear a lot of songs played on the radio. Some of them lots and lots and lots of times and you gets sick of hearing them, you know like Stairway to Heaven, Freebird and stuff like that, but this song, I never get tired of listening to. This song is timeless like Infinity and it came about in the most mundane way. The guitarist was sitting in his kitchen playing finger picking exercises on his guitar and his wife said hey that's really nice song and he goes, no it's just exercises and she said you should turn it into a song. The rest is history.

This song is a reminder to be humble.
Because no matter who you are, how famous you are, what you do, what you make, how much money you have, how much nice stuff you have, you are going to come to exactly the same fate as everyone else.
You will die, and you will be forgotten.

Perfect choice for the start of the Lenten season. On Ash Wednesday as ashes are smeared on each person's forehead the pastor says, "Remember you are dust, and to dust you shall return". This song is about having humility, and as a Christian, I interpret it as humility before God. Profound lyrics, beautifully played & sung. "Kansas" frequently uses violin in their music. If you enjoy Rock songs with violin, another band you should check out is "Shooting Star" & their song "Flesh & Blood".

The melody of this song actually started as a finger exercise by the songwriter Kerry Livgren, and the lyric was then inspired by a line from Ecclesiastes. This is actually quite different from most of their other music, but it's also one of their biggest, if not the biggest, hits, along with "Carry On Wayward Son". Their sound could be referred to as, for lack of a better term, American Midwest 70's prog rock. If you're interested, a few other Kansas songs I'd suggest are "Song For America", "It's You", "Miracles Out of Nowhere", "On the Other Side", "Loner", and that's just scratching the surface.

As per Kerry Livgren's autobiography, " Seeds Of Change "( he has a solo album with the same name), the song began as a guitar exercise, nothing more. Every time he would play this guitar exercise in front of his wife, his wife would tell him: " you should make a song out of that". This happened numerous times. During the recording of the " Point Of Know Return" album, Livgren remembered his wife's advice. He found some lyrics he'd previously written, found it fit the guitar parts. He took it to the band, and the band( in a positive fashion) said( paraphrase): Where has this been?! The kicker here is Livgren didn't think it was a good song, he only did it to appease his wife. Weird

LOTS of great stuff from this band
You are only scratching the surface
The chief songwriter and guitarist (Kerry Livgren) was on a spiritual journey throughout his life (eventually he became a born again Christian)
It is very evident in the lyrics
The singer, Steve Walsh, is one of the most unappreciated vocalists
He shared lead vocal duties with the violinist, Robbie Steinhardt
    Great musicians
    Great vocals
    Great songs
    Deep lyrics
You want a few suggestions? (studio versions please)
    Lamplight Symphony
    Hold On
    Crossfire
    The Wall
    Nobody Home
    Lonely Wind
    Icarus

    Miracles out of Nowhere
    All on RUclips

Back in the day when this was hot for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to
Red Rocks (Colorado/God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls.
I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (Harrah's outdoor venue) Still killin' it.
    I still have this LP./Album.

The lead singer Kerry Livgren went on to record Christian music after the group broke up and has won some Dove Awards (Christian equivalent of a Grammy).

Thank you, great reaction, try James Blunt Monsters, it's a song he wrote for his father as his dad was dying of a kidney issue, and could not be helped. 👍💞👍

I learn this song when I saw the movie Old School were Will Ferrel sang this song in one of the scene on the film. A great scene contrast from a comedy to a serious moment
