You're right. Sadly, Roy and Dale's fans are dying out, literally. If it hadn't been for my grandmother, I would have never known they existed. She grew up in the '40s and '50s when Roy and Dale were very well known. She grew up with them more so than I did. Then she passed her love for them on to me. I'll never forget that Sunday afternoon when we sat down and watched "Bells of Coronado" together for the first time. Grandparents just aren't doing that anymore. Why, I don't know. It's a shame.

I was born in 1951 and I grew up with Roy and Dale. They were (and still are) my heroes. When my baby sister (she was 10 yrs. younger) was little I bought her a Dale Evans cowgirl outfit. She looked so cute in it. I never got to see Roy and Dale in person. I sure wish I had. I thought once that I might get to meet them. I was working for a lady who was married to one of Dale's cousins, but was never able to work it out. I truly believe, however, that we will meet in Heaven.

I agree 100%. They were my childhood heroes. My Aunt Margaret had the book "Angel Unaware" and I read it as a child. It touched my heart even at that young age and brought me to tears. I just ordered a copy of the book. I want to read it again now that I'm an "old lady". I listened yesterday for the first time the song "Angel Unaware" written and sung by Dale. It was posted here on RUclips in honor of Dale's 100th birthday last October 2012. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

It's like Bill Gaither says about music, "We don't sing them because they're old. We sing them because they're great." I feel the same about Roy & Dale's films. My grandmother has always loved westerns. Therefore I grew up watching shows like "The Rifleman," "Bonanza," & "Gunsmoke" (that one didn't stick, though). But none of those compare to Roy & Dale's films. It all comes down to their personal lives for me. Roy & Dale were the real deal, and that makes all the difference.

Thank you again for posting this. This is probably the tenth time I've watched it, and I am encouraged every time. Roy and Dale truly were real, genuine people. There were other actors and actresses of their time that made some great movies and television shows, but none of their personal lives could even compare to the lives of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. I truly believe that they always put their relationship with God and each other first, and I appreciate that about them. Thanks again!

I often say that Roy was the cowboy with a purpose. He often said things like, "I had a responsibility to my audience, and I tried to respect that." He knew that he had an influence on children (and adults) and he wanted to use that influence for good. Most actors just fill a role and draw a paycheck. Roy was in the business of changing lives for the better, and he did. At least he has mine, anyway.

I agree that Roy and Dale's fans are fading away, but then again others are discovering them. I am 14 years old and I try to model myself after him.

When I was a kid in the 70s, one of the local tv channels broadcast old cowboy movies early on Saturday mornings. Usually, I didn't get up early enough to watch them, but I did catch a few Roy & Dale movies here and there. I'm pleased that most are available on DVD now. I love Roy Rogers! His twinkling eyes remind me of my great uncle Otto, bless him!

That was awsome. I've seen it on the "Happy Trails Theater" videos, and it was just as good now. R&D will always have a place in my heart. They were great role models for me, as a lot of others. I'm just so glad they were as real off camera, as on. You were very lucky to have them as parents along with your brothers and sisters. I used to see your family when I was little, and envy ya'll. One day though, I will see you all in Heaven. Then, I'll finally get to meet Roy and Dale. God Bless.

Thank you so much again for uploading this! I can say now that it wasn't what I thought it was going to be, but it was incredible. This definitely made my day! Both of them remind me so much of my great-grandmother, who was the same age as Roy and Dale. When I was a kid, I wanted to be just like Roy. Knowing what I know about him now, I want that more than I ever did. What I wouldn't do to bring back those family values! God sure has used Roy and Dale in a mighty way in my life! Thanks again!

You are just WONDERFUL to write back to me---I don't know HOW you do it & so quickly!!.....Thank you again, & from the bottom of my heart! You are Top-Notch in my book!! :-) My Uncle Ray Gephart was a neighbor to Roy in Apple Valley & they always waved at each other if they were going down the long drive ways & saw each other! Roy usually in a pick up! Once he stopped & gave Uncle Ray two autographed 8 x 10 glosses for my sister, Fran and me! ROY WAS JUST SO WONDERFUL!!

I have read the biography of Roy and Dale entitled The Cowboy and the Senorita written by Howard Kazanjian and Chris Enss. I thought it was very good. However, I would also like to read some of their personal writings, but it's hard to find those nowadays.

Ditto to all you said! We never met them, but will one day in Heaven! The museum was one of our dream places to go to. When it moved to Branson, we thought we might get there, as MO is closer than CA. We never quite made it. We were devastated when it shut down and the stuff was auctioned. So very sad. :o( The end of an era, and sadly R & D are being forgotten. We are creating a website for them and the films they did together. So fun! It is always fun to read about/watch anything of theirs.

So glad that you found it! It is a very nice video. Do check out Cheryl's book. I thought it one of the best bios by someone who was close to a celebrity. She makes them seem like real people, but doesn't just dish dirt. Very nice book.

Our grandparents think it is weird that we watch old movies. Our Mom grew up watching reruns of old films with her grandparents and on TV, so she has shared them with us. We don't really watch many new things, actually. Mostly old. Don't even have TV. Just a DVD player. Back then movies were really entertainment. There was talent. Now you just have to look good. God willing, I will pass Roy and Dale on to my kids! We just saw "Bells of Coronado"! It was fantastic! Have you seen "Gay Ranchero"?

  • @CowboyandtheSenorita
    @CowboyandtheSenorita  12 лет назад +5

Absolutely! I agree, it does make a difference when the personal lives are nice. Not that there aren't some great talents to see and enjoy who didn't have great personal lives, but it makes it nicer when you know they were nice offscreen. We have done those three TV shows, too. We didn't care for "Gunsmoke". Actually, our favorite TV western show is "The Big Valley" with Barbara Stanwyck. Some episodes are too 1960s, but lots are really good, high-class show. . . .

Did you ever have the privilege of meeting them in person? I wish I could have met them, but I have hope that one day I will meet them in Heaven. I would have also loved to have visited the Roy Rogers-Dale Evans Museum. It's a shame they had to close it. I'm sure it was an amazing place.

A great non-Roy western film is "Winchester 73 with James Stewart. We are just watching Audie Murphy westerns for the first time. Found a few really good ones and a few poorer ones. Have you ever done any Gene Autry westerns? I like Mary Lee, and although she did do a couple Roy films, mostly she was in Gene films. "Melody Ranch" is a really fun Gene film. Sadly, he didn't have Dale, so a lot of his films lack the good punch. But you can find a young Roy with Sons of the Pioneers in a few!

I remember watching some Gene Autry movies as a young child, but I can't remember much about them. I've always said that I'm not a western fan; I'm a Roy Rogers fan. My father loved westerns, but what he watched was the kind that I'm sure Roy & Dale would have opposed. Roy's films were always so down to earth. They seemed so real to me. I also love the fact that Roy was always Roy. Dale's name and character always changed, but Roy's never did. I never wanted to watch anybody but Roy and Dale.

We own most of their books and our favorite bio is "Happy Trails: Our Life Story" by Roy & Dale with Michael & Jan Stern. Fantastic! It is almost like they are sitting there talking to you. Really good. Roy didn't really write much, but Dale sure did. Her stuff is excellent. My other favorite Roy/Dale book is actually "Cowboy Princess" by Cheryl Rogers-Barnett (their oldest daughter). That is a must-read for any fan! It is tops!
    Happy Trails!

Now it has been all sold off... a huge shame...It should have been kept together.. it was, surely, a significant part of America's Cowboy heritage...

It is nice that Roy mostly played Roy. Even in his films that were period pieces where he played a different character, it was still Roy with an "assumed" identity. Growing up, we only really did R&D westerns. However, over the last several years, we have branched out to other westerns for variety. We don't like the newer ones that get a bit brutal. But I really don't like the ones that have the heavies as the "heroes" of the story! I don't want to be rooting for an outlaw.

My personal favorite is "Bonanza," as far as TV goes. I like how right never loses and wrong never wins. I usually don't like period shows or movies, but "Bonanza" is different than most. It stood for good, moral family values; although, most who made up the cast had very little. I find the show to be very thought provoking. Like Dale said, it makes you "feel well and want to do good." I haven't seen "The Big Valley." I'll have to check it out sometime.
