To anyone it may help, I had the Samsung 980 Pro for about 3 years (purchased it a short time after launch). A few days ago, the computer froze (crashed) and after I restarted, it did not boot and gave errors that said that no boot device was detected; strangely, the SSD was still being recognized normally in the BIOS. Did a few tests (switching NVMe seats, using other storage disks etc.) and came to the conclusion that it had died. I could still see and access most data stored on it if I used another disk as the boot device. Probably had to do with the infamous firmware problem, as I did not update it to a version that was said to fix it; Samsung could easily have issued big warnings that these disks should be updated otherwise they would be prone to total failure (firmware updates are risky by itself, and most people correctly do not update them unless something requires that), but they did not, as it would make them look bad. Just ordered the SN850X to replace it. I had Samsung in good standards, but after this problem, I no longer think they are that good; I hope I have a better experience with Western Digital NVMes (I have several other WD disks, all between 5 and 15 years old and still working fine, but none of them are NVMe).

@@weltschmerz88 Hi, my personal experience with Gen4 cards: They get pretty hot easily, even without heavy use. Beyond the suggested 70C max. I tried a WD Black SN-770. No way to use it without any heat sink. It doesn’t have to be a super duper heatpipe with extra fan… it seem to be enough to have a good pad plus a thin copper plate or heat sink , if there is enough room. Laptops and iMacs have not much space. Eventually I decided to use an Acasis 401 enclosure. The NVMe controller is the crucial and hot part… make sure that this part gets a proper cooling pad which has good contact to the alu case. It works like a large heat sink.
PS: I guess the Gen3 cards do not get that hot. I have heard about people using Crucial P3 plus Gen3 inside iMacs without any heatsink. Personally, if I would open my iMac, I would try to add a very thin heatsink solution.
The newest Gen5 cards with even more transfer speeds are getting hot for sure. As a Mac user I don’t care about Gen5 atthe moment.

How are the WD ssd? I have avoided WD for years now because I always had their drives fail only after a couple years, where I would have others like seagate last 2-3 times longer. Are their ssds better, or has the company standards improved?

    • @russella7263

Funny, I had the opposite experience with Seagate failing first and WD lasting longer (albeit typically only 25% longer). Mind you I always bought the server grade of both, perhaps at the budget end of the market, things are very different.

WD is a great company for storage drives of all kinds. Their drives and customer service never failed me. I still have an external 1TB hard drive, just as a backup of redundant data, that's going well after 13 YEARS! WD is something else, Toshiba, Samsung and Seagate are in my arsenal as well, but the streak continues for WD!

The 980 Pro 1TB uses MLC while all the others use TLC so reliability is much better with a 1TB 980 Pro vs 2TB+ 980 Pro or WD SN850x

Nope. 980 Pro uses TLC. Last MLC (2-bit) consumer drive Samsung made was 970 Pro. 3-bit is always TLC. Samsung has been misleading with marketing, as they have called their TLC 3-bit MLC and their QLC 4-bit MLC. Its just misleading marketing.
