Apparently, according to a letter from a Nintendo of Europe employee, Peach is so rich that she has multiple castles, including one entirely for her paintings. This is why there is no furniture, kitchens, or even a valid entrance in the Super Mario 64 castle.

I think what's creepy about this place is explained in the story. This place is actually in this game technically Bowser's Castle. He took it over. But wait. Where are the enemies. Where are the traps. Well that's because they are in the painting worlds that Bowser created. Aside from a few Boos the taken over castle doesn't change much in terms of aesthetic. The castle looks largely the same but Bowser's influence is still felt in a more subtle way. There are no inhabitants walking the halls. The place is practically a ghost town deserted and devoid of life save for Mips and the occasional Toad. The Toads seem to not even be real but holograms used to communicate to Mario due to them being sealed away by Bowser's power. The doors also being sealed by it. It really isn't until the end of the game where Mario defeats Bowser in the final showdown where we see Peach and 2 real Toads implying that Mario freed everyone who was trapped. Peach and the Toads walk into the castle as Bowser's control over the castle is removed and the castle becomes Peach's Castle once again.

    • @arcticdino1650
      @arcticdino1650 3 года назад +9

Bowser didn't really create the painting worlds. As we can see from the manual they already existed, Bowser just corrupted them and transformed most of the inhabitants (and later Mario cannon seems to say the paintings are just portals to other places in the Mario universe).
I guess this is why wet dry world's town feels so empty.

Supposedly most of the 15 Castle Secret Stars were actually ones that Bowser missed because Peach hid them away, so it's actually entirely probable that the Secret Aquarium is one of those missed stars. I know this video isn’t meant to be taken seriously, but dang it, I love talking about Mario nonsense, so here goes nothing!
0:15 Though I can’t explain why in universe, I would argue the devs did this to make sure the player doesn’t get confused on where to go. After 64, you always go to Peach’s castle after Toad Town: Paper Mario, Galaxy, Mario and Luigi 3, and even before 64 in SMRPG.
0:43 Yeah, this Peach’s castle seems more like an art museum than a royal home, but I have to excuse this case due to it being a very early 3D game: you can’t put furniture unless you want your game to be chuggin’. Just like the castle grounds, every iteration other than 64 and Odyssey, Peach’s castle felt more like a home with furniture and stuff. 1:32 What I can remember from Paper Mario, the room that has Whomp’s Fortress is where the kitchen should be, but since that’s post-64… I don’t know, she has a hidden kitchen behind Tick Tock Clock maybe.
0:56 The paintings were always there, but I doubt most were ever meant to be portals until Bowser cursed the place. Maybe the secret slide, and the cap levels are the exceptions because Bowser did say there are stars that even he didn’t find himself and those levels in particular don’t kill Mario by their environments alone. Mario can only die in those levels either by enemy interference (Bowser’s influence) or by being really irresponsible with jumping between high and low levels.
2:05 and 2:58 if it was Peach and/or her subjects who installed those places, they would’ve been warned about it prior. I’m shocked that you didn’t mention that one place that would help back up your argument: you know, the one place that kicks you out from THE SKY OVER THE CASTLE GROUNDS!? Bull-honkey on 64 logic! No amount of water can save you from a drop like that!
But for argument’s sake, that entrance to the sky was put in a spot where no wandering toad can ever trip into it: I mean, it’s a pain to get there as Mario and Toads aren’t the best jumpers. Also, again, Peach would’ve gave major warning to those places during employee orientation.
Boy, that was fun! Keep up with your June specials, ZoomZike! Can’t wait to see what your next one’s going to be!

Just as nonsensical as Peach's castle is that either the events Mario 64 happen nearly identically TWICE, or Mario 64 DS is a split in the timeline, and if it's the first, Peach either renovated the castle or she has ANOTHER castle, and because Peach's castle looks different in every game it appears in (like Mario kart 64, or Galaxy, or Odyssey), then it means either nearly every Mario game takes place in an alternate universe OR, the more interesting idea, Peach is just THAT stupidly rich and powerful that she owns a bunch of really similar castles. And here's the thing, Bowser's many castles would sort of imply that Peach really DOES just have a bunch of different similar looking castles, because this really IS a thing royals do in the Mario universe. We just never see it directly because it's not directly relevant to the events of the game.

-Where is the light that shines down even coming from?

-On top of that, the clock room also has two holes that lead to levels in the sky, plus an infinitely long staircase that ends at a hole that also leads to a sky level.
-The basement is flooded, with a door that leads into the moat. The moat which can be completely drained by ground pounding two random pillars, mind you.
-In Super Mario 64 DS, behind the Goomboss room is a balcony... with no way to get onto it.
-The lighting in the basement consists of nothing but fireballs. That seems unsafe.

And aren't the Toads trapped in the castle walls? (I've heard that apparently this isn't literal and they're just stuck inside the castle, but uh...)
Put toads in the walls of each room. Power Stars wouldn't only unlock other areas of the castle, they'd free toads from the walls and help you. Perhaps some unlock a minigame that takes place in the room. Maybe they can aid you with yet another power star. Maybe in a kitchen, you could free a chef that would cook for you. What would the food do? idk. But it would be so cool!

As someone who has dedicated years to making video productions with this game
This vídeo is the usual question that rises when it comes to what should each room be, and how to get to the castle
It seems that there are few ways to get to the castle, removing the one you said from Mario Kart 64
And that Bowser may have used a path from Dire Dire Docks to the castle.
It may be that there should be a way to get to the castle from the sky, why? Because that bonus sky level if you fall it takes you to the castle grounds.
Another possible way is to get from two ways by water, one would be by ship, since the coast has water and it clearly looks open to what could be sea or at least a big lake, the second way would be, by the river, there must be a river that takes you to the castle, we can see this in Hazy Maze Cave when you find the metal cap bonus level, we can see that a waterfall falls to the metal cap level, we don't know from where it comes from but we know it ends in the castle into what I mentioned earlier could be a potential lake.
It may be quite a locked place but there seem to be many ways to get to the castle, though, I see all of them unconventional, except for the previously mentioned "lake" though it'd be an unusual way to get to the castle, except if we think it's the princess's castle and she needs to stay safe, so keeping her in a place with no easy access may do the trick, I don't imagine a castle in the middle of a town in this case unlike Paper Mario for example, in this case it may be Next to the town in a locked like place but next to the town.
About the rooms, there could be the excuse of being under a remodelation, but I doubt it xD, at least they should have given a bed in Peach's room, because yes, that's supposed to be Peach's room if I recall correctly, I mean, where does she even sleep? xD
The slide, come on ZoomZike, we're not supposed to jump from slides, and maybe is not even finished, the place where it doesn't have a wall to prevent you from falling, it seems to have some pieces of steel holding it, which may mean it's not finished yet.
About the Wing Cap Bonus Stage, I wouldn't know what would happen to the Toads, we don't know if they can have wing caps, but they may considering they can use all other power ups in the New Super Mario Bros series, as for Peach, not only she can have them, remember she can also levitate, I honestly don't know what the purpose of having the bonus stage there is, maybe since it was under a renewal they just placed it there and didn't know, but who knows, This just seems to be very ilogical.
The secret aquarium, when you said, do you want a Toad dead? Hm... Maybe... Just maybe... that's why it's a secret aquarium.

    A few things
    1. Bowser didn't put the star in the aquarium. He has dialogue that says he missed the secret stars.
    2. If Bowser moved the paintings into their own rooms, he could have removed everything from the kitchen just to put a painting there. The toads could have moved them back afterwards. The kitchen could also be hidden away.
    3. The interior of the castle doesn't line up at all with the exterior. There are rooms were there should be none and weird empty Space between them.
    4. What the manuals state is usually in a limbo state of cannon.
    5. No mention of hazy Maze Cave? Peach has these giant caverns beneath her castle including a Prehistoric sea creature!

      3. I can't think of many games where the outside version of a building and the indoor version of it match perfectly (granted there's a loading zone in-between), so it's to be expected.
      4. Not sure what makes you say that. The manual's the manual. It comes with the game and it contains the story.
      5. Remember that these are worlds within paintings; Hazy Maze Cave exists within its "painting", not beneath Peach's Castle.

So for one, Nintendo seems to have retconned the whole "they exist in paintings thing" with throwback Galaxy being whomp's fortress, and not even really a recreation, as the pink bombombs think they recognize the plumber boy. Also, Hazy Maze Cave is entered via a hole in the floor that looks nothing like a painting, it looks like water, and has an area that exists out from behind the waterfall outside the castle. Finally, for the game manuals' cannon, what makes them less cannon is mostly things like retcons (like the Koopalings relationship with Bowser having changed from his kids to his minions, which contradicts SMB3's manual).

It's still a painting thing, Throwback Galaxy is just a recreation of Whomp's Fortress, that's all.
Although its entrance doesn't look like one of a traditional painting world, it still functions like one by containing Power Stars which boot you out of the level when collected. A part of the level that boots you outside doesn't discount that since it could just be the same as entering it.

Because Mario galaxy 2 shows that Whomps fortress exists in the "real" mario world, (It's not just a recreation, since they remember mario from the events of 64) and in Mario Odyessy you can use paintings to travel between kingdoms, that probably means it's been retconed paintings arent separate worlds, but they just tranport you to different parts of the same world. (Which i very much prefer over the idea of them being fake worlds inside the paintings tbh) So I think the point of the paintings was to be a sort of "Fast Travel Hub" for residents of the mushroom kingdom to use the paintings to quickly travel to other areas.

I love this video so much. I've been here years ago, wondering what the hell kind of castle this was where there were nothing but paintings and empty halls and a semblance of structure but no real rooms. I think what really got me was this is a sort of uncanny valley between a world designed purely for a game and a world designed to look lived in by people. There's parts of the castle that kind of look like rooms but no typical living quarters. I remember playing in the ds version and I would look out at the skybox beyond bob-omb battlefield or the courtyard, at the vast blue expanse that looks like ocean, and feel so lonely. It's an island of sorts. The haunted forest just outside the cage of boo's haunt. I love thinking about the actual explanations of this castle and I'm so glad someone else is asking the same questions. I like the reasoning provided in the video and the comments. The paintings are there already and bowser made them full of monsters. Secret stars hidden from his search that lead mario to a tower in the sky, or a secret aquarium. A slide that I could easily imagine peach wanted for herself, cause I'd want a secret slide if I could have my own house that size. It was just made more dangerous by bowser. I can get behind the explanation from nintendo, that peach has multiple castles. But I also love the comment that I saw from someone elsewhere. This is peach's castle, and she really did have it designed for both living quarters and also to be full of crazy hazards, and no one questioned it and just carries on with working there.

i have a Different question regarding the Cake...when you grab that last Star from Bows3r and fly off back to the castle, Peach beams down to the entrance...but she looks like she was unconscious or at least unaware of her situation-- she looks around, side-to-side, then notices the red plumber in front of her, "Mario!" she says, almost Surprised that he's there in the first place (at least, according to her tone and body language)...and then she tells her Toads, "cmon, lets bake a delicious cake...for Mario!"
...but at the beginning of the game, Mario gets a letter from the Princess, asking him to "please come to the castle; i have baked a cake for you"...
so WHY 1) does she seem so Surprised at seeing Mario, and 2) has she not baked the cake yet??
similar to how Princess Ruto denies any and every association with the Bottled Letter you found, even though that letter says "halp! stuck in Jabu, plz plz" (signed, Princess Ruto)...
...do you think maybe Bowser FORGED Peach's letter? (or, Ganondorf forging Ruto's?) like setting a trap with some Bait for our hero to fall into?

The castle in Mario 64 is basically one her extra castle where she keeps her slide and a lot of the dangerous things as all the paintings in 64 gave dangerous things in it. I like to imagine the kitchen is behind a secret door only Peach can unlock which makes sense given how none of the toads there besides the one in the main hall who would later be captain Toad can actually cook and you can tell this is a super secret castle because Toadsworth isn't there because if he were Peach wouldn't have been captured as easily and could have warned Mario about Bowser.
The fact Mario knows about the castle means she trust Mario that much that she told him about all her castles and how to reach them.

Peach did have a real piano, but one of the Boos came out from the back garden and possessed the piano and brought it to Big Boos Haunt which unfortunately makes that not really part of the castle at all because it's in a Boo.
But lethal lava land has high enough temperatures to cook food I guess. You need to keep something Frozen bring it to either of the snow levels. Peach is crazy and just wants servants to have a much more difficult time retrieving what she wants.

Something that would've been cool is if some rooms in the castle were actually more like a typical normal home, there would be some sort of painting or entrance in that room that contains a level that is based on that room. Sure some rooms can still contain levels like Bob Omb Battlefield, Cool Cool Mountain, Lethal Lava Land...maybe, but imagine a kitchen room where the entrance to the level is like maybe, a picture hung up on a fridge, or a fake window that's actually a painting. And in that level, you're fighting off kitchen utensil like enemies or food enemies, and there's some objective where you have to bring vegetables to a hungry Charging Chuck (you know teaching kids to eat healthy to grow strong) or cooking with a Hammer Bro with a chef hat. Or hell, imagine if there was a reference to the Got Milk commercial.
Or what about a level taking place inside a bedroom, what if you were short like a mouse and you're exploring this more huge version of Peach's room, and you're trying to find ways to get around the place. Jumping on the bed for extra height, finding a secret in a drawer, sure it'd be a bit cliche doing the whole exploring a room while being small trope, but hey for the time this game came out, this would've been fun. The mirror room should've been more than just a place to discover a secret painting that leads you into another snow level, they should've made some wacky gimmicks involving mirrors, like maybe playing an old world that's more inverted maybe, things work backwards somehow, just something that can seem like it's definitely a level located in the mirror room.
I think one level that actually seems to unintentionally get this idea is Hazy Maze Cave. The entrance to the level is all the way at the basement, and the walls are clearly pipes, and the level itself just looks like an entire sewer. There's an area that has "poisonous gas," there's some water around, those rolling boulders are...um...very up for interpretation, and not only that but the exit to the Metal Cap sub area in that level has a long stream of water that throws you out a waterfall nearby the castle, and usually sewers are polluting bodies of water. It's very odd how much this random level of the game happens to have so much to it that it acts like a legitimate part of the castle, as if it really has a use to it compared to almost every other room that is just has a painting.
Another level I'd say would be Jolly Roger Bay, but imo it doesn't seem to really take advantage of the idea of being an aquarium and it's more so just "here's a water level that's based on a room with water stuff"

I feel like these questions have the same answer as the following: Why would Bowser keep all of the castle's stars away from Peach upon taking over? It's clear he knows how to manipulate their power himself, if his own areas and the eternal staircase are anything to go by, so why bother? The only logical explanation is that he knows the princess is able to use them to greater effect than he can. That would certainly explain how she could possibly live there for any stretch of time, and how the castle could be larger inside than out. She could easily just create links to other areas of the castle, like bedrooms, dining rooms, or a kitchen, hidden away the same way that Bowser hid himself and Peach away. Just a fun little theory to consider.
