I didn't notice it until the microphone was right at the movement near the end. Take that with a grain of salt though, I do have pretty bad Tinnitus 😂😂
A little bit, but unless you’re spending $$$$$, microphones and typical recording software will amplify background noise, or any noise it can get, if there’s not much going on in the foreground. It’s tough for the type of recording we do

Very cool watch! You are painfully honest, but I appreciate it. Keep this channel a mix of straight mechanical and fun quartz/ electronic watches. The variety is part of the appeal. Take care, and I am looking forward to the next one!

What a unique watch, that quick set is so different. Love the design, the crown is hidden when you look at the dial from above, sleek. Thanks Mike ⌚️⌚️⌚️
Glad you enjoyed it and the comment on the audio. I ran it through at website called Auphonic which does a good job of normalising but I just thought I could here too much of a hiss on this one.
Great video Mike. Love that you didn't succumb to the voice over as most channels do because it just isn't as real.... Love watching you and actually enjoy when you get flustered. I know your pain!
No quartz, it's transistor driven & more akin to the ATO licenced clock movements of the 1960's. On all these types the balance pivots are under a fair bit of strain due to the weight of the two balance magnets. Still a great piece of history 👍
No quartz although they were emerging at the time of this watch. I still prefer the Seiko Elnix to this Cosmotron but both have been satisfying to work on and understand how they work.
Good to have you back in action doing video's again. Hopefully life is slowly starting to return to normal for you. Love the watch, and the fact that the band matches the face so closely is amazing. As for what I personally would like to see next....whatever you have on the bench or inline is perfect. I enjoy watching all of the video's you put out. Keep up the great work! Also...I would love to see a video on your faceted crystal watches on the other channel. Great idea!
Thank you. Life goes on which has been a motto I’ve had since my cancer. Still true today despite my rotten start to 2024. Back at the bench and enjoying every minute. I have more projects than sense and so many video ideas. Stay tuned
I always enjoy these kind of videos, brings something different to the table. I take Andy is doing well, my grand quartz he serviced is running perfectly every day so can always recommend him
Thanks, I had hoped people might be intrigued by this type of movement which is why I bought it and decided to film it too. Andy is well, I saw him only a few weeks ago at his bench. He has a lot of work on!
What an innovative time it was. I was riding on the back of my brothers Honda CB125 B6 before I got my own bikes. People were partying like crazy, bell bottom jeans that came off maybe to often, lol. Black Sabbath on the turntable blasting away. No environmental anxiety, people were just enjoying themselves, for better or for worse. It was fun times, at least in Sweden.
Magic....your videos have inspired me and helped me to get into watch making...i love the hobby and your videos. Thanks for your efforts. Truly appreciated 🙏
What a beautiful and interesting watch! Thanks to share your work with this superb movement! I learned something new today too. And what I most like in your videos: they are always so personal.
I'm pretty sure it was Hamilton who came up with this concept. On 3 January 1957, the American brand Hamilton Watch Company revolutionised the watchmaking sector by presenting the first electric watch in history: the Ventura. Its design was futuristic at the time, and today it is a celebrated icon. The innovation resulting from 10 years of research is technologically unprecedented! The Ventura represents a major evolution in watchmaking since the creation of the mechanical watch. It is the very first mechanical watch powered by an electric battery.
A big yes from me for more of these funky hybrid watches. I'd never considered working on these but your vid gives me the confidence to give it a go. Don't change your style either, love the mishaps, keeps it real. Great work Mike 👍
Another great one Mike. I feel your pain when one of those watches doesn't want to go easy. But you never give up, never surrender. Cheers and carry on.
Great video, thank you! Then there was a whole era of transition from mechanics to the quartz that we use now. And it was these beautiful electromechanical movements. Not only Citizen and Seiko made these, Swiss also created their own. It would be interesting to see a review of the Swiss ESA 9154 Dynotron movement, which was used in many electromechanical watches of that era.
I have filmed the Seiko Elnix a few episodes ago. I also have the earlier EL330 movement which are equally as bonkers. Swiss ones for sure in time when I find a project worthy.
Very few people people even try to service this era of electronic watches, you did pretty well on that, it isn't like a lot of documentation exists for those movements.
Oh, this is a magnificent watch. I love it! I have an old Orient with a day/date complication waiting for my attention. I never understood why I could only change the date by pushing the crown. Now I understand. 😅 Thanks! Your struggle has been very helpful.
Citizen needs to bring these back in ecodrive powered form. It doesn't even need particularly long power reserve; like a month would be more than sufficient.
Very cool movement, Mike. I'm not too keen on the case shape but that's purely subjective. The rest of it though is spot on. That strap matches it very well I think. Nice job on the restoration!
Very nice! It really take time and passion. I haven't even put back my mum's Seiko after months. There were moments in the video where I go "why you do that?!" Lolol.. Cringing moments, mistakes will always be made, can hear it has taken a lot out of you, but you have done it!
Sorry for the cringe moments. When there is no documentation on these watches and my first time working one one then add to that I am also filming it mistakes happen easily . Hope it was still enjoyable
Hey Michael, Thank you for this beautiful restoration. It is an astonishing watch to look at, especially with the red dial. I have the other brother with the holographic greenish-bluish dial and the original Cosmotron bracelet. You can find them in the Citizen Catalogue from 1974 on page 24. Finally, I can also start the restoration of my Cosmotron thanks to your video. :)
Thanks buddy! Finally got me to take my cosmotron or and worked on it. Mine has spacers underneath the "escape" wheel a little off and the magnets gets stuck. Pausing, rewinding and fast forwarding, also lots of cursing got it running again. 😂
Outstanding. I recently came across that incredible quick day date change doing a mechanical citizen seven star v2. Quickly made it one of my favorite watches! I also noticed the facets on that crystal on the outside. I always was under the understanding they were on the inside of the crystal. I have one of those that I have to polish and I'm not looking forward to it!
I did a video on a 7 Star Deluxe over a year ago now, it didnt have that setup but was one hell of a tricky movement! ruclips.net/video/rMfBm5k7yGs/видео.html Facets are mainly glass crystals and cut on the outside. Seiko mainly used glass although I do have a Seiko with an acrylic one with them on the inside. Also in my Ricoh video those were also on the inside. The beauty of the acrylic ones is you can polish them up in minutes but the glass ones are impossible. The glass I prefer though as they just look so good in the light
How does yours run on the Timegrapher. I’ve now noticed mine despite having a great rate loose 30 seconds on the second hand in 13 hours. It’s really odd
@@MyRetroWatches I was puzzled by your timegrapher as well. I have a normal reading, like a normal mechaical watch. I only had to fine tune it a bit, but then it was running well. I already sent to the customer so I cannot check the one finished, the second one has a broken circuit board so I cannot test it still. BTW if you have a circuit board... ;)
The movement sounds like maracas! I have a Timex Electric with a balance that I need to service. Maybe this video will inspire me to move it up the queue.
Great outcome and I’m glad you shared the lessons learned along the way! I have a soft spot for the facet crystals and I love the dial and style of case (are they called helmets?) as well. - Chris
Wow I think anyone’s patience would have been tested on that watch. But a great outcome! Good to see something a little different. Keep the great content coming buddy, keep safe 😊
I love these watches im now an owner of 6 of them lol id love to see you service all of the different types from 18000 beats to the newer 36000 ones lol
Looks like another beauty 😍 in your watch ⌚️ collection. This has a very beautiful mechanical movement. The date 📅 disc looks to be Japanese. "Don't Oil" 🛢 is seen since ya took the calendar disc off. Citizen is a fine watch. Your friend, Jeff.
Love to see you again Mike. How's your health? I have couple of these in my collection besides Seiko Elnix and Bulova. Imagine the technology in those days and combination of electro mechanics. You gave me courage to hold my these watches again and try to get them serviced. Thank you once again. Lots of love and regards from Lahore Pakistan.
I've got a few of these. A brown dial with the 7802 movement, and a light blue dial with the 7804. Both dials have the same pattern as the red one in the video. The third is a snowflake-type dial with the 7803 movement, which has the push-button second hand synchronizer. The red one there looks great with that matching strap.
Oh....come on Mike. You restore a Sicura Instalite.....oh, look, now I've gone and bought one. Then you casually show me this thing....and oh, oh, I'm on Ebay....how did I get here......oh, look, I've just bought a Cosmotron with a faceted crystal and red dial.... DAMMIT!. Excellent job as always. Hope mine is as nice as this one.
Just as I'm watching this vid, with T.V. on in the background, who appears on Would I Lie to You? Awesome stuff mate, hopefully you get even more viewers/subscribers.
Nice, great to see an unsual watch movement altlhough I do have a thing for the X8/Cosmotrons. They are very unique movements and they 78xx series is a much more refined design compared to the 08xx or 48xx - these still use a pallet fork and are closer to the Elnix. Since your Elnix video the Japanese tech docs I had on a boat have arrived. I'll stick some translated images on the FB group page but couple of random things stuck out. Beat error isn't set like 'normal BE' you actually need a gap due to the way the watch is driven backwards. If you look at the mainplate where the escape goes there is a tiny magnet that 'locks' the escape in place - this covers the lack of pallet fork and the wierd BE setup. The watch should kick out 180-260 horizontal and 160-240 - there is a handy little diagram of balance for reference. The A and B markings on the mainplate are for the auto hack found on the 7801, single pusher will set seconds hand to zero of its 0 seconds minus 3/plus 3. Great work as always, I've got an 'electric' Timex which looks a lot like the Hamilton/Ricoh setup - that lools wierd too!
Id welcome any docs you have movements like this . It helps me plus I can put them up on the group and my site. I did see the B and the magnet bit dismissed regrettably . I am sure I have this setup wrong as it already has an issue in that firstly the second hand does not beat like a high beat, could be normal I guess? Also despite a contestant Timegrapher reading it seems to loose 30 seconds in 12 hours . Maybe this is as you are saying about the setup. It could be I do a follow on video on this setup so if anyone else is doing this movement for the first time they can then also figure it out correctly. Thanks
Lovely watch. My era as well. Please venture into vintage non-standard movements ! Other channels have typical ETA, Rolex or Valjoux movements all the time so something "new" non typical is fresh !
Thank you Tom. I do whatever I find interesting and usually very affordable watches. You can have so much fun with something like these and not worry about breaking a part. Why I like and work on affordable vintage. This watch is more interesting to me than some Rolex movement. Granted it won’t get the views a Rolex would but that’s not my desire. I am looking for a few Citizens at the movement , early 60s ones that have a really interesting version of a rotor. Citizen “Jet”
Another great video Mike! Have you thought about doing a video on the Bulova 214 tuning fork movement? There's not many videos out there on them. I did see your excellent video on the 218 date movement, those are much more complicated than the 214.
Well steve, yes only yesterday I bought my first 214 spaceview which I plan to film. I have another 214 in the collection but it’s the spaceview I wanted. So this I plan to film despite never working on one. I don’t know if this one will run at all so that is the worry. Also doing a video now on a citizen Hisonic which is really a 218 but it’s in a hell of a state. Stay turned for both coming soon
Another great job again Mike,I have a Clinton Electric watch with a balance wheel and no idea how it works ? but it does and sounds so different from anything else I own
Superb, Mike That ‘pallet wheel’ is mind-blowing. Having done Swissonics before, I was feeling your frustration when you tried to fit the balance, having already fitted the coil !!! Really great video - I will definitely be more confident when I attack my cosmotron now. The ‘dial washer’ under the centre wheel - what did you oil it with? Thanks mate.
I wonder why the seconds hand doesn't appear to beat at 36,000 bph? All Cosmotron videos I have seen look like this too. Maybe the seconds hand requires 2 or multiple cycles of the escapement for one "tick"?
It’s was just as quartz was being developed . Swiss brands did the same along with Seiko. I have a Seiko Elnix video on the channel and that is another mad movement
Excellent video. Besides plain mechanical and early quartz, I also like very much these kind of movements. You can do more on the channel if you want. Why not a soviet Luch with a 3055 movement ? ;)
Just repaired a seiko elnix similar to this. Then bought 2 cosmotron x8. On x8 the electronic block and magnetic coil are 2 seperate pieces. hoping to get 1 running. But what a nightmare. They both different and both seem to have the same issue. The magnetic coil are both burnt out. Been looking ever since for this part. No luck. Rather buy one running if you want to get a cosmotron.
I love the Elnix and actually just completed another tonight. I did a video on them a while back but at the time it didnt get so much interest. This Cosmotron was interesting and I have since learnt today that I have setup my balance wrong in regulation so I still have work to do.
. . . for me an eternal beginner on this hobby seeing you do the things what you do is always interesting educative an fun at once. You are realistically honest too!. Could you please give me some insights into this 'special' balance wheel jule lubrication??? Im currently dealing with Miyota 82s7 movement w/ same mechanism. BR, -MM
. . thanks for your attention. Yes correct --this Miyota has the exact same cap jewel w/ the spring/washer/thingy thing. Following your video I have removed them using an oiler and Rodico --question now is what to lubricate, how to lubricate. BR, -MM
@@Dx7m the pivot does not appear to Protrude from the jewel and as such I just put a very tiny drop on the jewel the pivot is sitting on and nothing on the cap jewel.
Lovely watch. I am shocked at how similar it looks to my Rado Balboa. I suspect Citizen may have copied the design. Still a great looking piece. Audio sounded fine to me
@@MyRetroWatches Looks like the Rado Balboa V was made from 1970-79. The case shape is almost identical, and even down to small details like the handset and faceted crystal. Homages are so common in the watch world. To me, it doesn't detract from the Citizen in any way. I still think it's ace.
Nice to see somebody take appart and put back together a electronic watch instead of a mechanical watch. I was going to put a watch together from parts but i dont know what movement to use, i dont ware the same watch every day so i was thinking about a quartz or electrical movement, do you have any suggestions? Kind regards, keep up to good work. Juri.
I do anything on this channel if I like it, quartz , tuning fork, mechanical , digital! Take a look at my other videos and hopefully there are more that might interest you. Been making them 7 years now!
You did good. Look at you!. Do whatever watches you like, Mike. Maybe if you run into an older early 70s quartz Seiko like the 3803 series. But this was another fun watch from Mike. Mike Bolton. "That _was_ a good name until I was twelve-years old, and that no-talent ass clown started winning Grammys" -- Michael Bolton played by David Herman from the classic comedy Office Space Btw, Hamilton was the first to come out with the electric watch in 1957. The Electric 500 was the first one to come out with a battery to power a balance wheel instead of a mainspring. It has a wacky design with respect to the battery hold down spring making it easy to destroy the watch by slipping and ramming one's finger through the critical thinner-than-hair make and break circuit wires that power the balance. Therefore, they changed the design of the battery hold down within a year or two.
@@MyRetroWatches No, the Hamilton was not transistorized. Later models perhaps were. I have a few Benrus Technipowers that are similar to the Citizen you just did.
Hallo Mike, thank you very much for your interesting work ! I bought Citizen Cosmotron 7803 NOS some months ago. It is the version with the flyback function and the wonderful blue gradient Dial. My question is: Why does the secondhand not sweep as one could expect from a highbeat movement? Best regards Thomas
This I don’t know. I guess it’s gear ratios. It is a shame and something I really should have made a point of saying in the video. The Seiko Elnix appear much smoother.
I think the broken pivot was prior to your visit. Remember , the Wheel "Jumped" out of position. I think the pivot was already damaged, and might have been the cause of the poor running initially. As you removed the wheel the damaged and probably bent pivot snapped (jumped). IMHO you didn't break the pivot.
But what makes it go? I see the balance is powered by the coil, but there’s no escape wheel or pallet fork. How is the motion of the balance transferred to the train of wheels without an escape wheel?
The whole thing like the Seiko Elnix runs backwards. The battery pluses the coil which in turn reacts to the magnet on the balance wheel. This swings and has an impulse jewel on it like a normal balance that moves the star shaped wheel that I at first fitted upside down. That wheel moves (also a magnet on the main plate I believe. This then moves the first brass wheel which in turn powers the main train on the top layer.
One observation, despite the high beat of 36000 per hour, the second hand only ticks 6 times per second. I have counted it. I guess the high beat doesn't always translate into how smooth the sweeping action is. If someone has more info on this, I would love to hear.
beat is irrelevant since there isn't a pallet fork. The balance wheel is the power source (actually motor) that drives the train. Watches with springs, the power goes the other way. Only the swing period matters. No real escapement is needed. I had a similar Timex electric hybrid that I bought in the late Sixties.
Go look at my Seiko Elnix video. Same concept but it does have a pallet and escape and runs on a higher beat that’s visible. I prefer the Elnix in this genre plus the earlier EL330
I have two of the lesser Crystron's, sadly the second of the pair died when installing the crystal in situ and kinda killed the movement when the crystal turned out to not be as advertised and a bit over the measurement (seems to be quite common with ebay crystals where folks buy a set, use one and put in willy nilly the ones they don't use, return to seller who then sells it as such and such size and its not :( ) My other one is a 7300 but not the "mega" and can't get into it as caseback is welded to the movement through dirt and age, had it soaking in some isopropyl and then some naptha but that is not coming off without some heavy levering :*(
Please let me know if you think the audio is okay. To me it’s a bit hissy.
Does seem high pitched and hissy..
@@aprilchambers-baird2117 thanks. I don’t know whether to take down and fix…

I also noticed the facets on that crystal on the outside. I always was under the understanding they were on the inside of the crystal. I have one of those that I have to polish and I'm not looking forward to it!
I did a video on a 7 Star Deluxe over a year ago now, it didnt have that setup but was one hell of a tricky movement! ruclips.net/video/rMfBm5k7yGs/видео.html
Facets are mainly glass crystals and cut on the outside.
You did such a a great job on this watch! Nice skills!!!😂
Thanks for watching
I like your work.
the movement is so cool.
just finished a service on one, and I have another one on the pipeline. Amazing watches...
You can do it! always try something different. Keeps the interest alive.
Great outcome and I’m glad you shared the lessons learned along the way! I have a soft spot for the facet crystals and I love the dial and style of case (are they called helmets?) as well. - Chris
Thanks Chris. I have now too many facet crystal watches!
never seen this one before crazy all the ways they went wauw
A automatic quartz watch , never seen that before 🤔ah well first time for everything great vid Mike 👍👍
It’s not quartz. The balance is the regulator, if it was quartz then there would be no need for a balance .
Wow I think anyone’s patience would have been tested on that watch. But a great outcome! Good to see something a little different. Keep the great content coming buddy, keep safe 😊
Thanks Darren.
Thanks for this. I’ve always wondered how these work. I have an Elnix. It’s fun but uses batteries fast.
Thanks, Did you see my Elnix video a few episodes back?
@@MyRetroWatches I don’t think so. I will take a look. Thank you.
5:50 the magnetic screwdriver tip 😂 you wild
Love to see you again Mike. How's your health? I have couple of these in my collection besides Seiko Elnix and Bulova. Imagine the technology in those days and combination of electro mechanics. You gave me courage to hold my these watches again and try to get them serviced. Thank you once again. Lots of love and regards from Lahore Pakistan.
6:15 it makes sense that that is part of the quickset. If it were oiled, it wouldn’t drop freely when turned upside down.
I want the synchroniser version eventually, just need to recover from this one first!
I've only seen one other service / restoration video on those, and it's definitely more difficult.
Top job
Oh....come on Mike. You restore a Sicura Instalite.....oh, look, now I've gone and bought one. Then you casually show me this thing....and oh, oh, I'm on Ebay....how did I get here......oh, look, I've just bought a Cosmotron with a faceted crystal and red dial.... DAMMIT!.
Excellent job as always. Hope mine is as nice as this one.
haha, well plenty more to come so you better get saving!
@@octaviussludberry9016 I’ve 8 watches in the post from Japan! The Hisonic video I am producing now is the first
Just as I'm watching this vid, with T.V. on in the background, who appears on Would I Lie to You? Awesome stuff mate, hopefully you get even more viewers/subscribers.
@@LOSS444 haha. Sadly as I was not allowed to mention my channel name I didn’t get any boost as a result. The whole experience though was amazing
EXCELENTE SERVIÇO 👍👍 🇧🇷
Another great job again Mike,I have a Clinton Electric watch with a balance wheel and no idea how it works ? but it does and sounds so different from anything else I own
i have a cosmotron cal 7606A the balance top pivot has rusted away any idea where i can obtain one
Superb, Mike
That ‘pallet wheel’ is mind-blowing.
I have enough trouble if i have to leave a project for a week or so... 😂 Gotta love a faceted crystal.
I have a bit of an obsession with facet crystals
I wonder why the seconds hand doesn't appear to beat at 36,000 bph? All Cosmotron videos I have seen look like this too. Maybe the seconds hand requires 2 or multiple cycles of the escapement for one "tick"?
That's a weird movement a battery and a balance wheel, it's like they couldn't make up their minds on this one.
It’s was just as quartz was being developed . Swiss brands did the same along with Seiko. I have a Seiko Elnix video on the channel and that is another mad movement
Hybrid watches fun. Have several. Can keep great time.
Sadly this one is not but I have been told I have regulated it incorrectly and need two lines rather than the one.
Excellent video. Besides plain mechanical and early quartz, I also like very much these kind of movements. You can do more on the channel if you want. Why not a soviet Luch with a 3055 movement ? ;)
In the future maybe, I have so many projects to get through first! I a overrun with them.
BR,
-MM
By the same what do you mean exactly, they have the same type of cap jewel but I didn’t think the Miyota have that jewel on the steel washer thingy
. . thanks for your attention. Yes correct --this Miyota has the exact same cap jewel w/ the spring/washer/thingy thing. Following your video I have removed them using an oiler and Rodico --question now is what to lubricate, how to lubricate.
BR,
-MM
@@Dx7m the pivot does not appear to Protrude from the jewel and as such I just put a very tiny drop on the jewel the pivot is sitting on and nothing on the cap jewel.
Lovely watch. I am shocked at how similar it looks to my Rado Balboa. I suspect Citizen may have copied the design. Still a great looking piece. Audio sounded fine to me
Depends on when that was made. This one is around 73 ish .
"That _was_ a good name until I was twelve-years old, and that no-talent ass clown started winning Grammys" -- Michael Bolton played by David Herman from the classic comedy Office Space
Btw, Hamilton was the first to come out with the electric watch in 1957.
Yes I still get grief for my name, either the singer or that bloody film!
Was the Hammy transistorised? Sure I read citizen was the first with the X8
@@MyRetroWatches No, the Hamilton was not transistorized. Later models perhaps were.
I have a few Benrus Technipowers that are similar to the Citizen you just did.
maybe cannon pinion arrangement is something you could do with Lubeta (spelling?) like reversing wheels?
I broke the exact same pinion tip. Can you link me to your source for a replacement? Thanks
I got a donor movement from a friend. Cosmotron in Japan are as cheap as $20. You can’t buy individual parts for them
Hallo Mike, thank you very much for your interesting work !
👏
Another watch saved
The star wheel is essentially the fork and escape
One observation, despite the high beat of 36000 per hour, the second hand only ticks 6 times per second. I have counted it. I guess the high beat doesn't always translate into how smooth the sweeping action is. If someone has more info on this, I would love to hear.
That’s correct on this one. The Seiko elnix look smoother. I was a little disappointed with the high beat movement and less than smooth tick
@@MyRetroWatches Thanks for confirming my observation. Great video you made! ❤
beat is irrelevant since there isn't a pallet fork.
Boa noite! Podia ter mostrado como fazer o teste na bobina, tenho um e nao sei se a bobina esta boa
I have two of the lesser Crystron's, sadly the second of the pair died when installing the crystal in situ and kinda killed the movement when the crystal turned out to not be as advertised and a bit over the measurement (seems to be quite common with ebay crystals where folks buy a set, use one and put in willy nilly the ones they don't use, return to seller who then sells it as such and such size and its not :( ) My other one is a 7300 but not the "mega" and can't get into it as caseback is welded to the movement through dirt and age, had it soaking in some isopropyl and then some naptha but that is not coming off without some heavy levering :*(
Screw back case?
Gentlemen we can rebuild him. We have the technology.
I wanna get into watch restoration. Would any of you know a decent place to start, some kind of kit, an easy watch?
