That build is looking way stronger than i wouldve guessed! T11 on acts gear is no joke. i think there are probably quite a few builds/archetypes that are slept on right now. It seems like a lot of content creators are fine putting out the same ol safe league starters, so this is SUPER refreshing to see! Thank you!
Its even funnier that for example lightning conduit is even better overall that this (just a little clunky with the forced shock on enemies to do dmg). playing it for a couple of leagues now to level templars to maps and it never lets you down, mana casters are rlly god exept for the defenses and that will not change sadly you just cant archieve anything of note later on without insane values on your mana.

Affliction was my first league and I’m hooked. Played Toxic Rain and have been looking for a league starter that’s totally different with a whole new set of build mechanics to dive into and learn. Been following your videos and your enthusiasm for the build along with how different it is from what i played. makes me want to try this one along with you. So I’ll be looking forward to your guide. If you can make it as new player friendly as you can that would be much appreciated. Here’s hoping that everyone watching you doesn’t make the gear prices skyrocket (and that GGG doesn’t nerf it 🤞).
Welcome to POE! TR was my go to for years. I think if no nerfs and build remains viable you can count on cheap gear through basic end game. Then like all builds you'll be chasing divines to min max if you love it.
Something I think would help newish players is making goals once you reach maps. The goals people should aim for to move into like mid game and end game. That would be interesting and very helpful. Edit: I am the new player, so I’m actually asking for myself. Although I know to just complete my atlas and get my stones etc but after that I don’t know what to do but the thing is I have never actually completed the at last so yh that’s my goal next league. I just don’t have enough time and energy but I love the game
I'd like to second this. It's one of the things that I appreciate about MaxRoll guides (even if these days I personally tend to gravitate towards weird off-meta builds).
Yep my friend who is quite new to Poe runs into this problem a lot. He'll start doing white maps but he doesn't know what specific things to work towards so he gets overwhelmed and asks me constantly what to do. like the previous guy said, the gear progression section of the maxroll guides is actually very helpful for people like him, no matter how you feel about their guides in general
Yes. 100% both for myself when I was a new player and for my newer or casual friends this is crucial. And the main reason we all use max roll builds. It’s hard as a new player to understand what stats you want and where and how to start progressing. Sure we can read the gear that requires a few div but you don’t want to farm your first few div on a 1c budget lol. So having a template on how to progress your budget up and hit those milestones
You have to set a goal for yourself. 100% atlas completion? 4 stones? Gear for a second character? Gear upgrades? Uber bosses? 100 divines? Headhunter? Mageblood? Mirror? Deep delve? You choose what you want to achieve.
One that blew me away was manastacking with lightning tendrils. Got inspired by Jorgen a few weeks or so ago and the archetype is just so good for the acts. Mana stacking solves basically every problem you can have in the acts with a single stat that is _VERY_ easy to get a good amount of early without hindering your actual speed going through the acts. I used to always think of manastacking requiring archmage but it's also pretty good without it. Obviously ball lightning or a duration skill similar to it - it's a no brainer to go archmage. Arcane cloak ends up giving insane damage and defense when needed while you get incredible damage mitigation as you progress. Mana itself just ends up solving mana costs. It's great!
i did a selfmade build in the tattoo league, lightning tendril mana-stack totems. marylenes fallacy because crit isnt an issue, indigon, and just stacking as much defense as i could. marylenes is really cheap to get max res corrupt on, and i got an insane shaper shield with +1 totem, +2 all max res, and like 17 suppress on it. it was a rly cheap, because no one plays mana totems and gets suppress, but i managed to suppress cap and get like 85 max res or something. this was still when the alternate quality lightning tendrils was around, for more dmg during the stronger pulses. idk what the current gems do. the only issue was totems dying, because thats what totems do, and their range was really bad. my dps was quite high though if i could get all the totems targetting correctly. oh i actually found the build in my files. only 82% res turns out, and the dmg numbers are pretty shot because pob doesnt have the old lightning tendrils anymore. i think it was somewhere like 29 mil dps, but im not sure. pobb.in/nrSLd9B4IhR_
I don't think it is obvious why duration skill is a no-brainer... is it because you can snapshot the buff so that the projectiles are still out when the buff has fallen off?
@@ALC0LITE duration is a no-brainer because you get more hits from same mana use of archmage. I don't think there is snapshotting in PoE anymore, at least not in a major way. If anything, there are some "reverse snapshot" builds that use indigon and arcane cloak to get insane amounts of damage on duration skills like blade vortex or brands.
Watching you level this yesterday was wild. I'm glad it's working so well, because it really does look like a ton of fun. Should be an excellent league starter! -Xee
Damn, I was planning a ball lightning mana stacker hierophant as my league starter, and didn't even realize you were doing the same thing. It's a definite sleeper; can confirm it does well on zero budget
I played an archmage ball lightning build a couple years ago using pledge of hands and it was incredible. This build reminds me a lot of that. I think this will definitely be a league starter for me as ball lightning is probably in my top 3 favourite spells in the game

Good info. i have gripes but i'll essay down below for those who care. here's to continued hopium that BL/BL-static don't get nerfed and BL-orbit maybe gets some love. so i agree the build looks 100% league-start viable. should shred. but i have a complaint about the showing. a low level character, uncapped res, gear that's below par are all making you weaker but unmodded no-league-content maps and T11 instead of T14 or T16 (the most common tiers run) make you look stronger... so you can see how you've stacked a variety of unusual cases, some positive, some negative, so it's hard to gauge in my head exactly how powerful or not the character is. Technically, you also play the map carefully which is unrealistic to typical behavior (we're all blasters with CWDT-portal here ya :D? ) and if you play it more normal i think troubles will arise. troubles that, again, would be solved if you weren't purposefully weakening yourself for the showcase so they're "not real" troubles but at the same time, i feel pretty much any build can "look viable" when a player plays carefully as long as the build, ya know, can (can see). you could have probably done T16 like that. I know from personal experience the archetype you're playing around is gauntlet-viable so of course it's league-start viable... but it's hard to appreciate your specific setup because there are so many unusual cases. again. good work. just don't go too ham stacking variables that it becomes hard to process.
I tried the suggestions made doing inquis/heiro for ball lightning cyclone in the start of affliction and it didn't really pan out. However, I did pick up some tips that brought my witch to soloing most bosses (non-ubers). I may look into trying manastacking and foregoing the inpulsa for more damage and mom.

I hated Rolling Schmegma until I understood why everyone says it’s good…. Ok, so off the bat it feels like shit, it bounces and seems likes it misses and it’s just qwonky. What I didn’t realize and what creators and other should say is hang in there with R-Schmeg until u get elemental prolif and combustion going. Once that happens it’s off to the fuxkin races. U just lob it in general direction of mobs and it takes care of the rest. It ends up being wild! Now I fuxkin get it.
Awesome job man, it's been a long time since i played the archmage/mana archetype, I also was dabbling with a few builds with hiero and ball lightning and i'm totally going with this, if we have no nerfs of course.
My experience with mana builds is that their dmg is good but they tend to be exponentially squishy towards the higher endgame. My power charge stacking storm brand hiero was a menace, effecitvely onetapping juiced essences in T16 but it would fall over like paper. Was a really good sanctum runner, though. I could never make the onemanaleft style build work like his does in his streams.

I love rolling magma. its a teaching skill in the game IMO. Believe i will join you in the league start. i was testing lighting SRS that specced from boneshatter duelist which i was struggling on the transition with. You helped renewed my excitement for league start
Many people are not sleeping on this (Connor and his community being a key example) but its definitely underutilized in the meta. I think part of the reason is because although its strong, it is associated with being a little slow and a little clunky and there are faster smoother builds out there that just feel better to play.
I used to league start with lightning trap into ball lightning traps literally every league a while back. This gives me hope that I could maybe do that again in the future!
Ball lightning is slept on. I start the league using ball lightning from time to time. I usually use pledge and it can get me all my voidstones/map completion pretty easily. Last did it maybe 2 leagues ago though.
As someone who doesn't have a ton of experience in comparing builds, how would this compare to say a LA starter in terms of damage and surv? Especially when trying to scale it into more juiced content later. 4 L red maps like that seems insane but I think something like LA manages that easily too, but would be significantly squishier? This build looks really fun and I'm seriously considering it but I'm concerned that I won't be able to scale it up in power like with LA to TS due to my own lack of knowledge. With something like that there's a ton of step by step crafting guides but I doubt there will be similar for this and I'm not sure if I'm confident to power it up so to speak on my own yet. Will you be covering how to scale this up before league start? Thank you again, and really loving the daily pre season videos!
Generally what he does is a fuild build guide with a step by step progression. He gives some indication on how to craft the basics and potentially more advance gear if not too complicated. What you're after usually happens after league start when he's making videos on his journey and will do some dedicated videos to explain how to craft the big pieces
@@venntof.9095 I mean, I don't really. That's why I'm looking at stuff like this ^^ But for example, last league was my first league going past sorta stopping at just reaching red maps. I played LA into TS for it because it was a meta build with so much information and guides on it that I could pretty much solve every problem with direct video guides etc. To me it was entirely new and novel so it was still pretty fun. But now obviously my only frame of reference is the LA into TS build that I played before to endgame juiced maps so that is why I mention it. I can't compare it to something else because I've never played anything else to that level.
I don't think you are a noob or scaredy cat for loving LA. Part of the "meta" draw is satisfying instant crunch response - once you have it, it becomes hard to enjoy dot or slower "feeling" builds. And I do mean feel not rote speed. I'm not a big fan of slower proj builds but might try this anyway especially if tanky.
I watched your stream it was great seeing how you build these things, and enjoyed the final product well done …. If all stays the same this will be my. League starter, I’m using your srs on Maxroll and it is fantastic thanks for all your work
The core build is pretty flexible and does not force you into ball lightning i guess. Might want to do a quick showcase of some other synergistic spells/alternatives

Yo! Been playing mana stacking on and off. I’d recommend using a setup with arcane cloak, increased duration and sigil of power. Use enhance when you get it for a clean 4L
ima tell you rn, the defences of a mana stacker absolutely just does not feel like it holds up anymore in end game content. sure, red maps are smooth sailing just because the damage is there. but ghosted guardians, ubers, or even just juiced rogue exiles will one shot you. the lack of supplementary defences, especially phys damage mitigation, will feel super shitty in the late game. at least that's what I felt like with my mana stacker last league.
@@subtractemI'm not going to argue with that, but I'd rather go with less damage and a better feeling/play style. I tried this morning up to Dominus. All subjective, sure, but there is enough time for people to give it a go before the league starts, and make up their mind. You said you tried in the past, you could try again: maybe something changed (I really don't know, maybe)
I've tried it a few times in recent leagues. It just flat out does half, possibly even less than half, the damage of RM. It's fine if you really want that comfort but I'd rather recommend the strongest option as long as it's not MEGA clunky. I firmly believe that with just a little practice that RM actually becomes enjoyable to use, many people just give up before getting there.
would you recommend anything in a trigger setup? I would want to personally automate as many spells as I could in terms of added damage like hydrosphere.

this is a very generalist build, im not sure about any specific content i'd be focused on at the moment. going to wait for patch notes before i start thinking about that more, much can change!

Whats the endgoal of this build, it's looks good to do the main quest, but is it to boss or to map or other ? (it don't look very good at mapping, but this is just a 4 link)
Starter, it mean easy leveling……don’t need a lot of currencies to finish map and then can farm more currencies to make another build or invest in this one to make it high end build.
The only thing I hate about manastack archmage build is that the damage is inconsistent, you deal almost nothing when your mana pool is low/empty. In affliction league wisps empowered mobs which move and hit fast is always a pain in the ass as they caught up to me before my mana recovers from the previous cast.
Thinking about trying Mana stacking, though on a Witch. Not sure that's the best idea. Or I'll try the Shock-Freeze Three Dragons Elementalist, which I think is just a really neat tech.
Should try rushing mental rapidity and lightning cast speed node then head straight down to ash storm and frost. Grab mana nodes above it. Then grab mana and health next to cast speed nodes. Pick up mana shock mastery from lightning cast speed node. You can run arcane cloak immediately and dunk every boss, this also allows you to use mom really early. I use arc to level and ran lightning conduit of heavens. Also galvanic field is better for leveling imo since youre moving alot and will most likely be at 50% shock or close on bosses.
Spark is VERY bad, Arc would maybe be playable but probably 1/3 to 1/4 the damage of Rolling Magma. There's just no reason not to use RM in Act 1-3, it's just that good.

Welcome! I like to try a new league starter each new league, it really keeps the game fresh and forces me to learn more about the game.
Don't get used to the drop rate, wildwood was insane for loot.

I used to league start with lightning trap into ball lightning traps literally every league a while back. This gives me hope that I could maybe do that again in the future!
Ball lightning is slept on. I start the league using ball lightning from time to time. I usually use pledge and it can get me all my voidstones/map completion pretty easily. Last did it maybe 2 leagues ago though.
As someone who doesn't have a ton of experience in comparing builds, how would this compare to say a LA starter in terms of damage and surv? Especially when trying to scale it into more juiced content later.
4 L red maps like that seems insane but I think something like LA manages that easily too, but would be significantly squishier?
This build looks really fun and I'm seriously considering it but I'm concerned that I won't be able to scale it up in power like with LA to TS due to my own lack of knowledge. With something like that there's a ton of step by step crafting guides but I doubt there will be similar for this and I'm not sure if I'm confident to power it up so to speak on my own yet.
Will you be covering how to scale this up before league start?

Generally what he does is a fuild build guide with a step by step progression. He gives some indication on how to craft the basics and potentially more advance gear if not too complicated. What you're after usually happens after league start when he's making videos on his journey and will do some dedicated videos to explain how to craft the big pieces

But for example, last league was my first league going past sorta stopping at just reaching red maps.
I played LA into TS for it because it was a meta build with so much information and guides on it that I could pretty much solve every problem with direct video guides etc. To me it was entirely new and novel so it was still pretty fun.
But now obviously my only frame of reference is the LA into TS build that I played before to endgame juiced maps so that is why I mention it. I can't compare it to something else because I've never played anything else to that level.
I don't think you are a noob or scaredy cat for loving LA. Part of the "meta" draw is satisfying instant crunch response - once you have it, it becomes hard to enjoy dot or slower "feeling" builds. And I do mean feel not rote speed. I'm not a big fan of slower proj builds but might try this anyway especially if tanky.
RIP my league start. Mana stacking was getting pricey in 3.23 from Onemanaleft, now its going to be crazy.

The core build is pretty flexible and does not force you into ball lightning i guess. Might want to do a quick showcase of some other synergistic spells/alternatives

Yo! Been playing mana stacking on and off. I’d recommend using a setup with arcane cloak, increased duration and sigil of power. Use enhance when you get it for a clean 4L

ima tell you rn, the defences of a mana stacker absolutely just does not feel like it holds up anymore in end game content. sure, red maps are smooth sailing just because the damage is there. but ghosted guardians, ubers, or even just juiced rogue exiles will one shot you. the lack of supplementary defences, especially phys damage mitigation, will feel super shitty in the late game. at least that's what I felt like with my mana stacker last league.

I would suggest switching Rolling Magma to Blazing Salvo in act 1. Feels much better.
It's half the damage. I really don't recommend that, I've tried it in the past.

All subjective, sure, but there is enough time for people to give it a go before the league starts, and make up their mind. You said you tried in the past, you could try again: maybe something changed (I really don't know, maybe)
I've tried it a few times in recent leagues. It just flat out does half, possibly even less than half, the damage of RM. It's fine if you really want that comfort but I'd rather recommend the strongest option as long as it's not MEGA clunky. I firmly believe that with just a little practice that RM actually becomes enjoyable to use, many people just give up before getting there.
would you recommend anything in a trigger setup? I would want to personally automate as many spells as I could in terms of added damage like hydrosphere.

Whats the endgoal of this build, it's looks good to do the main quest, but is it to boss or to map or other ? (it don't look very good at mapping, but this is just a 4 link)
Starter, it mean easy leveling……don’t need a lot of currencies to finish map and then can farm more currencies to make another build or invest in this one to make it high end build.

The only thing I hate about manastack archmage build is that the damage is inconsistent, you deal almost nothing when your mana pool is low/empty. In affliction league wisps empowered mobs which move and hit fast is always a pain in the ass as they caught up to me before my mana recovers from the previous cast.

Is mana stacking one of those a lot of skills can swap in builds or does ball lightning specifically have something about it that makes it viable
You can swap in other skills but generally lightning skills with a duration tag are the best because it works much better with the added damage buffs.
wouldn't 20% life reserve mastery + petrified blood work until you got more currency + levels?

Hmmm, might steal this setup for storm brand of indecision in SSF.
Should try rushing mental rapidity and lightning cast speed node then head straight down to ash storm and frost. Grab mana nodes above it. Then grab mana and health next to cast speed nodes. Pick up mana shock mastery from lightning cast speed node. You can run arcane cloak immediately and dunk every boss, this also allows you to use mom really early. I use arc to level and ran lightning conduit of heavens. Also galvanic field is better for leveling imo since youre moving alot and will most likely be at 50% shock or close on bosses.
Also check out galvanic field and orb of storms interaction 🤠 love your enthusiasm and always have, looking forward to the journey

Is Arc/Spark off the table for leveling with until you get to Ball Lightning?
Spark is VERY bad, Arc would maybe be playable but probably 1/3 to 1/4 the damage of Rolling Magma. There's just no reason not to use RM in Act 1-3, it's just that good.
