I have three dogs and they all like to have head and belly scratches. They usually flinch at first, but they are fine after a second. That being said, they were all rescued from abandonment, so I don't know how their previous owners treated them.
Okay, I guess my dogs are broken. I have eight rescues that feel it necessary to get hugged and kissed daily. I lay down to sleep and I have one 60 pound dog curled around my head , one 68 pound dog on my shoulder with his head under my neck, one 85 pound dog hugging my arm with his front legs and a 55 pound dog laying on my legs. I have four other large dogs (80 to 90 pounds) sleeping on the bed waiting for one of the dogs to move away from me so they can take their place. Whatever room I’m in they are right under my feet. I am the complaint department when someone gets their feelings hurt. If I go out in the front yard they howl till I return.how do I tell my dogs they aren’t acting like dogs?
Not a professional of any sort but I think rescues are a different story and often the acceptions to most rules. I have a cat who was a starving stray kitten riddled with ringworm when we saved him, he literally meows and virtually crys and begs until someone picks him and lets him curl up in your lap and go to sleep, every cat I’ve ever had was not a stray, none of those other cats ever liked being picked up nor cuddling type affectionate at all besides the rescued the stray.

This is a super-helpful video. I wish more people would see this. I am always unsure how to politely set boundaries for other people when they treat every dog like a cute toy, not realizing that dogs need their space and that not every dog is a Labrador.
My dog gives the side eye at approximately 9pm and will keep staring at me until I go to bed or put her to bed. Besides that she's a clinger. Also she lacks when she's scared or submissive
My little dog is ten months old, I found out after I chose him that I was probably his fourth owner. He was chipped, vaccinated and I travelled to his home to meet him. I was suspicious when he walked past his food uninterested and paid no attention to his water. I contacted the man I bought him from, he ignored the food question, confirmed he liked tea and coffee. On walks he was frightened of everything, and still is, two months later. He is very skittish. He bonded with me instantly but not so with other people and seems as if he’s never seen any birds or animals before. He was obviously fresh from the groomers when I met him. Am I being paranoid or do you think his past life is suspicious. He didn’t answer to his old name, was not used to the lead and is very possessive of his new home and his mum. This little boy is a chihuahua. He’s beautiful, is learning, is very affectionate towards me.
Yes he hasn't been treated very well, lots of love and patience will help him, he does seem traumatised. You could possibly seek out a behavioural specialist or even a positive reinforcement training club. If you can't afford it you could ask your vet for advise, but if you have the love and understanding then he is having a better life than previously ❤❤❤
Well Chihuahuas can be kinda skittish but also, based on your comment, I'm thinking he hasn't been given much freedom to just be a dog (something that unfortunately happens often with smaller breeds). What do you know of his previous family? Whatever the story is, he is with you now, so he's safe! No need to pity him for his past, dogs are resilient, he'll come through. Give him time to understand his new living situation and try to give him a consistent routine as much as you can. I definitely second the recommendation to contact a behaviorist!
Start dog training with treats or positive reinforcement. I know that sounds odd but engaging with your animal in an activity, it gives them something to do. It gives them a purpose. Be calm and patient. But seriously dog training is like a job, it gives your puppy something too look forward to. We have a dog that was never handled correctly and was always around kids. He hated his feet being touched, he would growl at everything and wouldn’t let you pet him. It’s been two years, his favorite thing, being rubbed down, the occasional foot rub. He loves cuddles now. He now needs to be on our laps 247. And the occasional toy throw. It’s been a huge change. Just work with your pup.
@ Thank you for your advice. I lost my sixteen year old Yorkie at the beginning of August and his brother when he was thirteen. I know you meant well but it would appear that this little boy ( who has come on leaps and bounds since I commented) had no socialising with animal or humans. It appears he hadn’t spent any outside time, if any. Everything seemed new and frightening to him. We have overcome everything to an acceptable level except getting him,to eat. He will attempt to pick up things from the ground when out for a walk, even his own discarded food the birds have dropped. It’s very strange, he doesn’t guard his food, he is just not interested. Yes, I have tried home cooking and top dog foods. My late Yorkie had a lot of health problems throughout his life, food allergies being one. I’m not a novice when it comes to food. I have realised why his coat had some sort of spray on it, he sheds constantly. I thought it was change of seasons. I have concluded that he has had multi owners in his short life because of humans creating a vicious circle. He sheds because of his diet, stress, loneliness and lack of affection. He happily drinks water now but it’s a dietitian I’ll have to speak with. I can let go his lead ( in the garden) and he will return to me. He has complete trust in me. I just have to fathom this food problem.
@@viv1tony2 but... What does he eat? You can't tell me he hasn't eaten literally anything in 2 months lol Also, you've had his teeth checked, right? I'm sure you have but just in case. Oh, and that the bowl is at a comfortable place for him.
My current and last dogs are/were border collie mixes and when they come up to me because they want something specific they'll duck away from a pet. My last dog, who was a female, would take a few steps towards the back door if I asked if she wanted to go outside. If it wasn't that, it was usually because she needed more water or food. My current dog is a boy and he does the same thing, except that he uses his eyes to indicate what he wants. Looking towards the back door or the treat jar after dodging the pats. Or if they just looked at me excitedly wagging their tails vigorously, I know they really wanted a play session. "No pets! Play! Play!"
I'm sitting with my cat buddy, watching this video. It doesn't feel like she's overly engaged, but hey. I exclaim, 'Brussels sprouts?! I love brussels sprouts! Why's he dissing sprouts?!' She responds, 'I can't say I'm a fan, but, ya know, you do you.' I feel unsupported on my sprouts issue here. Anyway, carry on.
My dog’s preferred place for pets is around the shoulders. Or, what I call the shoulders. Where the front legs connect to the body. She loves that spot.
My dog is a Caucasian Ovcharka. He absolutely loves me preparing his food & he's ready when I place it down. He also loves belly rubs. And if I'm sitting anywhere, he keeps an eye on me but from about 6 feet away. A couple of points I don't like are the face licking, what's he been licking before???? And I don't allow sharing my bed or sitting on furniture. He's too big for that. I've owned a Kangal & a Tibetan Mastiff before so I have good experience with large dogs. BUT......my Ovcharka will almost change the appearance of his eyes, so I give him space because that look is menacing, it means go away & leave me alone. PS: He never plays with toys except those that you can fill with treats, an activity toy. And he never uses a bed, I've tried & now I just leave a big folded quilt with an old T shirt that has my smell. It's there if he wants but nope, he prefers a rock hard floor. His 3 favourite things are his 2 daily walks, his meals & treats, & his garden patrolling. Would I recommend A CO? No. Unless of course you have years of big dog experience. You give them respect & love & you have a friend for life, if you don't socialise immediately you end up with a dangerous unpredictable dog. BTW, his best friend is a Chihuahua which is so funny to see, he adores that dog. I would recommend a Rottweiler because they love to play, very misunderstood because they much prefer cuddles & play as opposed to attacking. But I will stress that I wouldn't have any big dog with small kids around. Period.
Oh my goodness...I use the same form of punishment. Zuzu sees it as worse than death. She has an insatiable need for constant attention. Fortunately, she is just too darn cute for her own good and she has me trained very well; however, sometimes her negative attention seeking antics could cause her harm and she gets gently scolded and the silent treatment for 5-10 minutes. Take care.
I stopped petting anyone on the head after i was pet by a very big man like that. He meant well, but i still felt it like hitting and even strokes were uncomfortable. Now i only pet my dog where it wants me to and when it wants me to
I think some breeds are just one people dogs. Chihuahua's are a great example. They got that one parent or whoever they like more than anything else in the world but they only have room in thier little cute blackened soul for one of those. They can still be friendly (if thier inner demons let them) to other people but no one will ever get close to that one person they truly bonded with.
7:50 That isn’t accurate. You had it right the first time that it might be boredom or pent up energy. They might also be anxious about you being gone and start chewing things up to deal with it. But it’s not “resentment” or “revenge”. Dogs don’t have the ability to do something so that in the future beyond a few minutes the human will know. Dogs aren’t that complex.
My chiweenie loves affection and always has to be near me and won't eat unless his food bowl is right next to me. His bowls are on the other side of my couch in the kitchen, I could be sitting on the couch and if he can't see me he will eat a little bit until I move his bowl next to me
Selective hearing is 100% on the owner. We've taught our dogs to sit after 6-8 "sits!" or "come!" after 20 comes--if they come at all. Why should they when invariably the dog gets grabbed by the collar and bundled away from the fun it was having? Besides, sometimes "come" means the human is about to play a fun game of chase across the park with them! Do not repeat commands, and do not use commands until you know your dog actually knows them. Just because they "sit" or "come" in your living room doesn't mean they'll equate those actions to the commands in a completely new area.
Tbh a lot of this doesn't tell me a dog dislikes me, it just tells me about stuff that some dogs do. For example, I have three dogs and they all LOVE me and my family, but one of them has anxiety and although he loves and trusts us, he chooses to go to a quiet room to rest. He does this even when my dad is home and he along with the other two LOVE him and is excited each time my dad comes home or comes inside after a break out front lol Title is a bit misleading and can make people think their own dog doesn't like them when really, they just want to be alone sometimes.
# 7: People should never, ever touch, pet, call or interact in any way with a Guide Dog when it is in harness aka working; this is guaranteed to ruin its training. #2 Licks: At - 30F licks are not permitted. My Maremmas quickly figured this out on their own and changed their behaviour to now ask for belly rubs. #1: One of my young working LGD pups started to steal and devour my leather gloves; the best solution was to make sure she could not gain access to my gloves or boots. She was always testing my boundaries until she grew up. This pup valued her autonomy but would stand between a cougar and me if she had to, Another LGD pup would steal my gloves and sleep on them. He is 2 now and he did the same thing last week An interesting thing about the second dog was the first time this happened, I had no idea where my gloves had disappeared to. When I asked the air 'Where are my gloves?' the pup turned and ran off and returned with a glove. So I asked him 'Where is the other one?' he happily bounded off to parts unknown to return with the second glove. I have decided to be very careful with what I say around this dog. 🙂
I enjoy my dogs relaxed happy sleepy tippy tap happy behavior when they want love, come and get it. Yes I have a dog who can't stand having his head touched. So I don't do it. Another wants it so I give it. Read the dog read the room. They are incredibly intelligent. Just relax and learn.👍
I let a animal choose to be with me or not. Personally if they get weird then I retreat. Just like with humans. If you don't want me around then best believe I won't be there. 😊
My dog is not much of a hugger, except when she is. Burrying her head into my shoulder. What she absolutely loves is getting pet and rubbed on her hind leg flaps (some dog owners will understand😂) she'll pose up and everything😊
We have 8 dogs 2 of them are pups sometimes 3 of the older dogs they will avoid loud noise like the plague so we let them chill when eating and sleeping never grab dogs randomly or you might lose all there trust
Funny .. my little baby won't eat unless i sit with her. Most of the time i have to hand her a few bites of something first before she will eat it. If i am not in room she will not eat at all. She will actually starve ... i have never teased her with food. When we play i always let her win after a little time.
@welshgruff yes, obviously... and because i think of snakes as reptiles, they slither around the grass on their bellies instead of curling up into a spring and hopping around. I also noticed that beetles walk by on all 6 legs... we all know they should hold 1 in the air to wave hello to everyone. I just need to quit thinking of beetles as bugs. If Bugs Bunny knew this he would stop telling Elmer it's duck season.
My dog is petting obsessed. If we on.y pat him wth oone hand he taps us with his paw saying you have fwo hands dont be so dam lazy you have 2 hands 😊😊😊
My 3 malinois all demand we eat dinner as a family. They wont eat unless i am next to them. Same with sleep as well. They are total pack animals. They need the safety and security of their pack
Am surprised that mlst ppl are not aware pf this. Is similar to human behavior you just gotta see the signs. Exept for the eys part family dog's eyes alway look like that 👀 regardless whats going on.

There are some points made that are just wrong.
All dogs are different of course and I think each situation and behavior should be looked into more deeply before taking any of this as sound advice.
In the beginning of the video when it mentioned calling your dog repeatedly with no response immediately caused me to think "lack of trading"
It's so important for your dog to respond to this command, not just for human dominance or obedience, it's a safety issue that needs to be reinforced in case you find your pup in a dangerous situation and need them to respond quickly for their own good. If God forbid there is a fire, for example, there will likely not be time to repeat the command more than once.
I thinks it's a fine line between human being "boss" and dog getting to choose what it will or won't respond to.
All in all I wouldn't put much stock in what this video is trying to portray. If something seems off to you about what your told about how to bond with or teach your pet, please always do your research and trust in your gut, especially if you're a long time dog owner 🙂
I have three dogs and they all like to have head and belly scratches. They usually flinch at first, but they are fine after a second. That being said, they were all rescued from abandonment, so I don't know how their previous owners treated them.
It might be that they tolerate it. But don't exactly love it. Many dogs will let you do stuff they don't like
@theflyingdutchguy9870 based on their reaction after, they love it. Even jealous, when another get scratched and they don't.

My dog won’t eat until I am sitting beside her eating my meal too….
This is a super-helpful video. I wish more people would see this. I am always unsure how to politely set boundaries for other people when they treat every dog like a cute toy, not realizing that dogs need their space and that not every dog is a Labrador.
I didn’t think it was that helpful.
@ any specific reason or do you just like being negative?
@@m4rtin419 so I’m negative because I don’t share your enthusiasm for the video. I don’t like it as I don’t agree with what he’s saying.
lol my Shihtzu does not like too much hugs. He’ll
Push me away. But when I’m not feeling well he will stay with me
My dog gives the side eye at approximately 9pm and will keep staring at me until I go to bed or put her to bed. Besides that she's a clinger. Also she lacks when she's scared or submissive
MY DOG LICKS MY FACE ALL THE TIME WHEN HE WANTS TO GO TO SLEEP
You can't tell me he hasn't eaten literally anything in 2 months lol
Also, you've had his teeth checked, right?
My dog is a velcro dog and has to be touching me all the time 😂
My dog is a Caucasian Ovcharka.
Period.
I punish my dog by ignoring him for 5-10 minutes. You'd think I'm a monster judging by his reaction
Abuse!!
Take care.
My mini dachshund is 2 years old and is by the side 24-7, and I love it. ❤
I stopped petting anyone on the head after i was pet by a very big man like that. He meant well, but i still felt it like hitting and even strokes were uncomfortable. Now i only pet my dog where it wants me to and when it wants me to
Our oldest dog require someoen to be near to eat
This whole video is wrong. It 7 common sense things to do while alive
Lol. Have you ever had a dog before?
Well, my dog must hate me I guess.
Brussels spouts are amazing and my dog loves them too!
My chiweenie loves affection and always has to be near me and won't eat unless his food bowl is right next to me. His bowls are on the other side of my couch in the kitchen, I could be sitting on the couch and if he can't see me he will eat a little bit until I move his bowl next to me
Hmmm whenever my pup eat or have her treats she wants me to be near or besides her.
Same here!
She sees you as her safe space!
Yeah. How odd that they actually say “some dogs” as if there are exceptions.
That’s so sweet! It sounds like your pup feels really safe and comforted when you’re nearby.
MY DOG WONT EAT UNLESS I AM IN THE ROOM !!! WHAT DOES THAT MEAN>>>
My dog is autistic
Nah, my dog kisses out of affection. It's actually super weird. Lmao
He does this even when my dad is home and he along with the other two LOVE him and is excited each time my dad comes home or comes inside after a break out front lol
Title is a bit misleading and can make people think their own dog doesn't like them when really, they just want to be alone sometimes.
This pup valued her autonomy but would stand between a cougar and me if she had to,
Another LGD pup would steal my gloves and sleep on them. He is 2 now and he did the same thing last week
An interesting thing about the second dog was the first time this happened, I had no idea where my gloves had disappeared to. When I asked the air 'Where are my gloves?' the pup turned and ran off and returned with a glove. So I asked him 'Where is the other one?' he happily bounded off to parts unknown to return with the second glove.
I have decided to be very careful with what I say around this dog. 🙂
2:30 that’s why Velcro dogs (like Great Danes) are such a pain in the a$$
I enjoy my dogs relaxed happy sleepy tippy tap happy behavior when they want love, come and get it.
I always thought dogs hated shoes also because we always get in them when we leave the house. They associate them with their human leaving.
Don't go after my puppy kisses I love and treasure those!!!
LOL Omg our dogs LOVE brussels sprouts!😆
Esp frozen
My 87 lb GSD female thinks she's a lap dog
We have 8 dogs 2 of them are pups sometimes 3 of the older dogs they will avoid loud noise like the plague so we let them chill when eating and sleeping never grab dogs randomly or you might lose all there trust
Funny .. my little baby won't eat unless i sit with her. Most of the time i have to hand her a few bites of something first before she will eat it. If i am not in room she will not eat at all. She will actually starve ... i have never teased her with food. When we play i always let her win after a little time.
Perhaps because you think of her as your little baby rather than as a dog.
Perfect answer🤣🤣🤣
My two dobes wait for me to get home, and then they would/will eat. RIP Zues miss ya buddy
My dog is petting obsessed. If we on.y pat him wth oone hand he taps us with his paw saying you have fwo hands dont be so dam lazy you have 2 hands 😊😊😊
My dog loves me but he does not like to be hugged
My dog will not eat unless I sit right beside where he eats.
My 3 malinois all demand we eat dinner as a family. They wont eat unless i am next to them. Same with sleep as well. They are total pack animals. They need the safety and security of their pack
My dog won't get outamyass
😂 struggle snuggles... you might struggle but WE gonna snuggle 😂 I playfully force my husband to snuggle me and that's what I tell him every time 😂
Am surprised that mlst ppl are not aware pf this. Is similar to human behavior you just gotta see the signs. Exept for the eys part family dog's eyes alway look like that 👀 regardless whats going on.
Have I been blocked from RUclips or some s*** I can't read any comments
I wish my dog would go sleep in another room. We are thicker than theives
I mean if they dont like you then surrender it and get a better one
Yooo
this all seems like advice for the "he/she doesn't like people" dog... not your own dog 🤣

my dog is so intelegent
Wrong dog doesn’t get to be on you couch unless you invite 😊
Hope you dont have dogs. Not a good person.
My dog hardly ever licks. He's about 1 1/2 years old and has probably licked me 10 times, if that. 😢
My 11 month old puppy is full of wiggles and kisses.
Some dogs just aren't lickers, mine for example isn't.
What if my dog licks while humping my leg?
So basically like living with a woman
Hhahaha this is hilarious
You don't know much about dogs.
Clearly, you don't. Go away and save us from having to endure you any longer
Ha ha....just like human men. Must play hard to get.
Great. She hates me.
I will never understand how literally anyone allows their dogs to lick their face. It’s absolutely disgusting and unsanitary and unhygienic. I enjoy dogs from a distance but I will never be a dog person. Honestly it’s absolutely repulsive letting dogs lick someone’s face.
I don't like a dog licking my face, but it is nonsense to claim it is unsanitary/unhygienic.
@@loganmedia4401 Check out what germs and nastiness is in a dog's mouth. You do know they lick their butts and other body parts and lots of them eat poop. They eat cat poop and their own poop. I don't know why you would want that tongue on your face or mouth. I love my dog but I don't want him licking me on my face. Nasty!!!!
I am a dog person but my dog does not lick my face. That is nasty and can be unhealthy.
You should pay attention to people around you, humans are gross.
I never understood how anyone doesn't immediately have to shower after an infant spits up all over them. *Shrug* To each their own.
Negative dogs don't belong on the couch or your bed, and people who let their dogs lick their face and mouth are disgusting.
You convinced me......back to the pound he goes.
I guess I'm just not meant to give a fur baby love. I leave them alone for oodles of time after watching this video.......I mean youtube knows best. 😉🦬💩
