I live in the USA & have Danish family and visit Danmark frequently. Since 2017 I have been making the "stopovers" in Iceland via Icelandair. The natural beauty and harsh environment have me spellbound. The people are wonderful as well. Several years ago I noted that when I tried speaking danish to icelandic people, thinking it may be more understandable, the reaction was not as expected. First of all, most of them speak english pretty well, but there was a palatable attitude of "get that shit out of here" when it came to me speaking danish. So I ceased with the Danish. Just over a week ago I was flying from Copenhagen to Keflavik and watched this movie. It was most excellent, and explained much of what I had experienced in Iceland, as well as some narratives I have listened to from my mother on why she left Danmark after WWII. My stayover in Iceland was short, weather was terrible, and on my flight from Keflavik to my USA home I sat next to a wonderful icelandic lady who I spoke with for many hours on the flight. All the films narratives were discussed and confirmed, with many examples from her own life, and surrounding culture living in Iceland. The requiered danish lessons in school, danish inserted in the chuches, government, etc. I also thought of my own mother, who I think would find the stodgy Danmark of her youth unrecognizable today. I will remember this summers stopover because of this movie, and my long conversation with a new icelandic friend sharing her thoughts & culture. And to any sad Danes reading this, don't feel too bad that you were bad colonizers. Maybe that's a good thing!? In the end, Iceland gained independence and is still friendly today. Or should say you have typical Scandinavian "Frenemy"? If only you Histoy with Sweden had turned out as good as Iceland!
I have lived in the Nordics for a while now, and even dated an Icelander for 2 years. Icelanders' attitude to Danish reflects Finns' attitudes towards Swedish. They don't care for it, and would rather master English, seen as more neutral.
Amazing. I watch movies without previous trailers and I didn't understand very well what the deal between the two countries was. This video helped me a lot to see more than just the surface of this film. Thank you!

One of the most succinct, poignant and powerful video essays I've ever watched. Some of the best 6 minutes on RUclips.
Such a visually stunning Film. I absolutely loved it.

Very nice essay
I have nothing else to say, just commenting foe the algorithm
OH those MFers! I spent a solid hour searching for those original pictures after watching the film. They are just a lie!
That's right... just like _Fargo_ isn't "based on true events"! 😆
It looks beautiful, are the points delivered in the essay the ideas of the film's director, producer, story writer or the maker of this video?
This film is an art peice but i think it was a tad bit too long for its content
La moquerie n'est pas un sujet
Say colonial one more time
Colonial.
I loathed this pointless film. So tedious.
Your life is pointless, and you are tedious.
