YAY!!! HAPPY DAYS!!!!I remember your unboxing of the Blazing Star and showed my son. This was his first R/C and first Tamiya. Boy oh boy!! This brought back loads of memories for the both of us. The U.S. kits all came with that archaic mechanical speed control lol! I remember buying this kit along with a Futaba Magnum Jr FM radio. Radio systems back then included two standard servos as apposed to NONE in 2024 with Futaba's current model lineup. Thanks for posting this vintage build!!!

Yeh the mechanical speed controller is the way to go with a kit like that just looks right :)

Gav, all the buggy variants have the metal idler gears, even the top force Evo and they are awfully soft. The best upgrade are the all plastic gear set for the ta02

Tamiya did two versions of the blazing star, the one you have on the show and a complete version that came with a tamiya aspect sport stick system that included a CPR 80 esc/receiver, battery and charger... you covered this in the unboxing video, had a different kit number I think you said.... the mechanical speed controller doesn't come with this version.
I recently bought one with the radio set myself...

I have a very early model that came with a mechanical speed controller. I just recently pulled it out of storage and have it running with a ESC. Still a lot of fun to drive.

Nice video Gavin. I thoroughly recommend a vacuum tool for assembling shock absorbers, such as Tamiya’s 54152. Works really well but I don’t think it’s suitable for really big units. Takes away a lot of guess-work, I use mine constantly. Cheers!

Hey there Gavin, first thanks for all the great content on the channel. A tip for the shocks I've head about is while covering the shock shaft hole fill a little shock oil and the insert the shock shaft/piston assembly in. Of course when you feel the shock shaft on the tip of your finger remove it and allow the assembly to slide through. This is supposed to prevent all the tiny bubbles from forming in the bottom "corner". I haven't tried it yet myself though. Was gonna give it a try on my TA02SW 911 GT that still needs to be built. Thanks again.

I remember this first time I fitted an electronic speed controller in my Rough Rider back in the 90s it did not go well it caught fire and melted the plastic box and I went back to a manual one .

Nice build 👍 Wish I could win it, but raffall not permitted in Switzerland 😢 Anyway, the future owner will have a superb kit. I also like the tires and wheels, and in any case, it's quite easy to find other style (Top Force Star Dish for example) 😉

My kit definitely came with a msc and I had to use it in the beginning until I was able to purchase an esc, bearings and a 17T motor at a later stage. It was really annoying and definitely not state-of-the-art in 97/98.😅

I don't see the problem with the wheels and tyres. I think it makes it look a little more real with nobbly road tyres.

Hi, yep, I commented on this in the video. The kit didn't come with one, so I need to check my parts bin to see if I can find one. If not I will get one off eBay.

Did you get the mechanical controller from your spare parts bin or did you find it in the kit box? Anyway, I have nevr gotten one working properly myself. The very first kit I got (Tamiya Black Countach) came with one, but it burnt down quickly when I was testing it and the tires got stuck. Since then, I stuck with ECS's. I have two vintage kits that come with mechanical speed controllers, one is Ligier Matra JS-9 and the other is RM Mk.3 Tornado. The one for Ligier is nothing special, but the one for Tornado seems special. If/when I build this kit, I will try to make it work.

Things happen, it actually replaced my optima mid because I stripped the gears and couldn't get parts at the time, I still have it so I might dig it out and rebuild it now that parts are available.
