Vor deinen Thron tret' ich hiermit, BWV 668, is known as the last work by Johann Sebastian Bach, composed or completed shortly before his death in 1750. This chorale arrangement, based on the Lutheran hymn Wenn wir in höchsten Nöten sein, exudes an atmosphere of deep remorse, surrender and heavenly expectation. The flowing, harmonious voices weave a meditative structure that takes the listener to a moment of ultimate contemplation and peace. This masterpiece is often regarded as Bach's musical swan song, in which he, as it were, expresses his last breath in music. The simple, yet deeply felt melody and the rich harmonies make this piece a poignant final chord to a great composer's life.
