The closest you can get to a "Root RTS" is the game Tooth and Tail. Pretty good by the way. I know they are pretty different, but I like the fact that if you made a few changes in the setting for either Root or Tooth and tail, they could be games set in the same universe.
I had never heard of Tooth & Nail before, but having looked it up now I'm pretty into the idea. Might have to check it out to fill my long-dormant Starcraft itch.
Great tip, love Tooth and Tail;o) Another one that sprung to my mind was Armello. While not as economically or complex, I liked that the factions also played asymmetrically + the gorgeous design.
Thanks for the review :) I've been enjoying the physical copy of the board game and was hoping there was an alternative to tabletop simulator on steam. Hard to meet up with people sometimes and this can be convenient.
Would anyone be able to tell me if I can play local multiplayer AND online at the same time? For example, my wife and me on my PC playing with 2 friends online. Thanks.
Tutorials sold it I’m buying it lol. I should wait for the iPad version but I’ll try my computer first. I’ve never played Root before so this will be an adventure.
Andy Mesa haha. You are not the only one to point it out. But on the other hand, through the power of google I’ve informed myself that it’s a common enough mistake that adaption is starting to become acceptable. Great thing language adapts to dummies like me. 😀 seriously, I don’t think I’ll ever use adaption in place of adaptation again.
I have seen the board game recommended a few times but have never gotten around to playing it. I may just skip straight to the switch version since I only occasionally get the chance to play my board games. I wonder if there is a way that they could included a mode that could be used on an iPad or Nintendo Switch alongside the physical game. Not having played it, I can’t suggest exactly how that would work in with the game rather than be an annoying gimmick.
I love the tabletop Root, having only played it a couple of times at my local boardgame cafe. The friends I played with didn't enjoy it as much, so I'm stoked to play the digital version. Overall solid review that has me hyped for something I didn't know existed before, but I found it strange that you say the frame rates are fine for the most part, while they look pretty bad in the video. Maybe it's just the choppy, low frame animations, and not the fps of the game that I'm seeing. Whatever the case, I hope it'll get fixed as it develops through early access.
Well, I’m a board game guy so the physical product is definitely my preference. The tactile feel of pieces, the toy factor, friends at the table, physically moving pieces on a table, that’s all stuff I absolutely love. That said, I think this is a good substitution to play on the fly or when getting friends together isn’t possible like during a global pandemic.
Smashdown to be honest my copy was supplied by the publisher as a review copy (as noted in my Root review). That said the retail version of the base game is usually selling online ~$50. I think it may be between print runs right now.
Yeah, I think it should translate really smoothly. Just make sure you go through the tutorials then try and play a couple standard games with all 4 factions in play. Even if you haven't mastered each of the factions you should have a solid understanding of the fundamentals and the physical game faction boards lay out the steps for that faction's game play really clearly.
I played Root once with two friends and struggled a bit to get through it, but still wanted to come back to it eventually but the daunting relearn and teach keept it on the shelf. This looks great for a refresher and to teach my current group after going through it. I can only hope it delivers as you say and it does look beautiful! looking forward for giving it ago. Got Root for TTS and may just go for it in a few game nights. Thanks!
Yeah, I thought so at first but then I timed them and thought about what all goes by in an actual battle in the tabletop version between declaring, clarifying, etc... And it seems like the animations are longer but not by all that much. I think the main issue is that ti could make the game even faster if they weren't there, and in almost all other the respects the digital version is faster than the original. So it's not too big of a hurdle for me, but I agree and know it'll really bother some people which is why I wanted to bring it up in the review.
@@TheCardboardHerald Fair enough. I pulled the trigger and bought it based on your reply, and I must strongly disagree with you. After putting in 3.5 hours, it is very noticeable and takes you out of the experience. I found myself checking my phone while waiting for the animations to finish, which I never do with other digital adaptations, e.g., RftG, Scythe, Yellow & Yangtze, etc. For reference, I own the physical copy and all the expansions for Root. The rest of your review is spot on, though. Thanks for taking the time to reply to my comment. Keep up the good work!
worm1618 sorry it didn’t work out for you, but I’m glad you posted your assessment here and other people can see a different perspective. I hope they add a skip feature so that you can enjoy it more down the road!
Hi!! Can u find other players online or you must play only with AI?i want to play with other players so if there are no players online i will not to buy it
Vuk maybe Everdell, Tiny Towns or Mice and Mystics would be good alternatives? I’m not sure they have digital versions but all 3 are very different styles of games but feature mild-fantasy forest critters.
The Cardboard Herald in all non-box related matters though, really good review! My friends and I were considering buying the game and this is the thing that decided it for me.

great review! any idea if they will add the expansions to the digital version?
Graham Baker my understanding is that due to the success of the digital release, Direwolf intends to release the other factions / maps.

I can’t get over you saying “adaption” instead of “adaptation” but I appreciate the review otherwise.

Would you prefer this or the tabletop, I was personally leaning towards the adaptation because of how much cheaper it is than the tabletop version

@@TheCardboardHerald How expensive was your copy of root, if you dont mind me asking. I'm struggling to find one for under 100 dollars

@@TheCardboardHerald okay that makes sense, thank you so much!
never played root but this might be the best time!
If i learn through the digital version can I teach it to my friends irl no problem?

Those battle animations are egregiously long. The developer needs to introduce an option to skip battle animations, otherwise it's a hard pass for me.

@@mobileuploads3623 Card and chit draw mostly. It's small, but still there.

Hey there! Yeah you can do online matchmaking with random people or invite friends.
Does anyone know if the Online play is “live” or can it be asynchronous?
I have same question
It looks like you can have a turn timer of 3days, so that suggests it can be async 3:55
Wow this looks awesome!
It is!
The game doesn't really seem like it's for me....but damn the adorable woodland creatures has me tempted to pick it up still
