Angelina Jolie lit up the red carpet at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival in a backless silk slip gown that put her tattoos on full display. And on stage, it was her emotional tribute to her late mom that captivated the audience. Angelina’s mother, Marcheline, who gave up acting to raise Angelina, died in 2007 at age 56 from cancer. Angie was on hand to receive the Maltin Modern Master award, but she was giving all the flowers to her mom.

Cancer is terrible. I’m glad Angelina has used her power and social capital to bring awareness to preventative measures. She’ll never even know how many lives she’s saved and impacted.
