When Bill said “There is no girl” was a defining moment for him. He could’ve easily lied and said he was playing for his wife or girlfriend or whoever, but he told him the truth. That’s how deep he felt the connection.
"It's my favorite" Frank mumbled that before starting to play. So they were both kinda being vulnerable, and the character of frank was introduced as "being a bad liar" so Bill took the comment at face value. Part of the scenario was it was the end of the world, so there really wasn't a real reason to lie to one another, part of it was that they didn't want to.
This was one of the most emotional parts of this episode, it really got me when bill started his sad version of the song reflecting on all these years he went by surviving totally alone.
The acting by Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett is amazing, it's like you're in the room. Bill is increasingly unable to stand Frank playing "Long Long Time", not just badly, but like a jaunty jig. Bill's "No, No, Not This Song" tells us so much. A song about unrequited love is precious to Bill; Bill doesn't need the book when he plays/sings, he knows it by heart. Frank's subtle facial expressions speak volumes; he sees into Bill's soul. Bill presents himself as a stereotype; a gun-toting misanthrope. Reality is far more complicated. Bill is highly cultured, and he's an incurable romantic who always believed in true love yet endured a life without it. If I didn't know better I'd think I was watching a scene from a brilliant Jane Austen adaptation. This is the best movie I've seen in years and it's a bottle-episode from a series about a zombie apocalypse. People speak about how love endures and about the redemptive power of love. This story set in a broken world where all chance of love and redemption shouldn't exist proves that it's real. This deserves all the awards.
Bill could have literally stuck to his guns and sent Frank packing but he took a chance and was rewarded with something he probably thought he'd never have... love.
That's what I love so much about it. He knew the risks of getting attached and distanced himself from the possibility. But Frank appealed to something Bill thought he lost: his humanity.
The real reason I loved this scene is cause you get to see their COMPLETELY different personalities. Frank starts off with playing it so upbeat and almost with a happy feeling. Then Bill steps up to the piano you see how more quiet and serious he plays it. It’s such a great metaphor for their personalities in general. Frank has happy-go-lucky personality traits and Bill is much more serious person, but he has so much heart and so much passion which is definitely displayed in his rendition of the song. Just a little beautiful moment of love
There was just something so beautiful about how Frank just KNEW which music was Bill's, and that he turned out to be right. The fact that the song he chose to play, that he said was his favourite, happened to be Bill's favourite too (shown by how Bill knew it completely by heart) was just so pure and sweet. It's something that instantly connects them. And actually shows how alike they are, they just express themselves differently. The way they both play the song so differently shows not only their different personalities but also the different experiences they've both had in their lives and how those experiences affected them and shaped them differently. Like you say Frank was the happy-go-lucky, carefree, positive one whilst Bill was the more careful, cautious, serious one but deep down had so much love he wanted to give and... also always wanted to one day receive. And they balanced each other perfectly. Bill taught Frank how to survive. Frank showed Bill how to live.
You could feel the connection between them instantly. The way Frank looks at Bill as he plays, you can tell he feels it as well. This episode was so beautiful.
This episode means so much to me. Growing up being told how bad this was and believing I couldn't love like this was so damaging, and this episode just made the me feel fully and entirely affirmed that I do know who I am. There hasn't been doubt for years but this just made me feel like it's always been okay.
