Terrible way of cleaning a fossil, this can do so much damage so fast, and in the end you still end up scratching it with pick and after all of that you have barely exposed anything.
How do u clean fossil out of hard rock?
Daniel Miller two ways that could be better is by using something called a micro jack or air pen which allows you to remove material while not getting too close to the fossil (look up paleotools micro jack), and often with them people will use a special sand blaster or air abrasive with different abrasive powder like aluminum oxide or baking soda to get better detail and preparation out of the piece. Or you could do acid prep, but with that you also need to do it carefully by slowly adding acid usually formic acid until you get more and more of the fossil to appear, adding too much might destroy it though.
I agree, this is a horrible way of cleaning a fossil. I don't know any other way to say it, but the end-product looks like a rookie got his hands on it. Never use a rotary tool, or a wide blade, to do detail work on a fossil. The two best ways are as Misha Statcenko describes .... With an air-scribe and sandblasting unit.
Here is a link on how to properly use an air-scribe, and sandblaster (using baking powder as a blasting media) ruclips.net/video/9JVeTGIM2Ag/видео.html
PaleoTools Micro Jacks can get VERY expensive ($590+)! Here is a link to a unit that costs much less ($160). www.fossilshack.com/store/p2590/scribe.html
Here is a video showing how to make an inexpensive sandblaster. NOTE - I would never recommend completely removing a fossil from it's matrix. Most fossils have hairline cracks in them, and the matrix is the only thing keeping the fossil in one piece .... As the maker of this video finds out! I personally would NEVER remove more than 50% of the matrix surrounding a fossil. ruclips.net/video/jLCdZFXVl14/видео.html
I wonder how many less obvious fossils but potentially rare fossils have been lost in the process of extracting much more common
Thank you for watching
Thanks for sharing this with us
Usually i get small and I mean small drill bits on my dermal ,make a crack almost and pressure flake it off with a metal bopper. Then to clean it up i use a wire brush bit on my dremmle
Thank you for your comment. Thank you for watching
Hi I’m a beginner could you please explain why you started using the round but opposed to the long skinny one? I have no idea what bits to use for what effect!
Sorry I have a lot of questions lol what are the bits you’re using do they have to be diamond bits? What is the host rock called because I think I have similar in Michigan? And what is small chisel tool called so I can buy one 😅 thanks for your help!!
Because of the shape of the shell. Thank you for watching
Wont the diamond bit dull down faster if u dont use water?
rina m water helps with heat and dust
@Dick Thick'em i was asking a question bcus im not too sure. So dont be an ahole.
Not really stops you from getting sillicosis
How would you clean up a fossil that is very large?
