    So great, man I hate living in this city, no great bands come here. Super fun, not as tight as crimson of course, but Fripp is a human metronome tuned to the atomic clock.

      What city do you live in?

    • @radiozelaza
      @radiozelaza 3 года назад +1

      Fripp, when he started to play music, thought he was completely arhythmic, could not hold a beat at all. That would explain why he became so obssessed with playing to a metronome.

      Anthony Rodemus He's NO Tony Levin. Mark King gained popularity by playing slap bass, & better than "usual" in a very Pop band in the early 80's . I was performing & recording @ that time. ( & now) I bought that cassette. & Nothing ( Jumped out @ me, like... WOW ! This is unreal ! ) @ that time, Jaco was "Normal" to me. I , Litterly grew up down the street from him. & saw him Countless times . Crimson... Was UNREAL ! & at that time, Music, as an art form was litterly @ It's PEAK ! [ The bar was VERY HIGH ! ] & NO.. [ My name isn't Paco ]

      Chapman line on a 4 string bass. The drummer is murdering Bill's part, but the lv42 guy is solid.

    • @peterbuchman2647
      @peterbuchman2647 5 лет назад +4

      King nailed the groove while playing a Chapman Stick line on a four string jazz-type bass with a limited register (21 frets I think). And no, he's not Tony Levin, quite obviously. He's a great player in his own right with his own set of skills.

    I think the bassist is either triggering a loop for something or switching on and off a pitch shifter, either way it's a lot of work on the right foot, exhausting to have to lean on that left leg for 5 minutes.

    • @HaydnMowbray
      @HaydnMowbray  2 года назад +1

      It's played straight on the bass, no foot pedals. He's fretting the higher notes with his right hand

    • @HaydnMowbray
      @HaydnMowbray  2 года назад

      Here's a video of how to play it ruclips.net/video/RvJx9r8sasE/видео.html

    • @evankeal
      @evankeal 2 года назад

      I figured it out, it's a pedal to do the vibrato, hes got it set on a momentary switch patch, that little trill would be impossible on bass strings hence why he came up with that idea. Sounds great. Kudos to him for pulling the stick part off so well.

    • @HaydnMowbray
      @HaydnMowbray  2 года назад

      @@evankeal I hadn't actually noticed the pressing of the pedal before. I don't think he's resetting a loop or anything like that. I suspect he's got a momentary switch to act as a sustain with a compressor? between the end and beginning of the riff. You clearly see him playing it as per the already linked video so there'd be no reason for him to trigger a looper. And yes I am both a guitarist and bassist

    • @evankeal
      @evankeal 2 года назад +1

      @@HaydnMowbray I finally figured it out, it's for the vibrato on the end of the riff where Tony does trills on the stick with his fingers on those tiny strings. On a bass that would nearly be impossible to trill those strings like that, and certainly difficult enough for this bassist to figure out this clever workaround. It sounds really good to me.
      In short, hes got a vibrato set up to mimic string trills.

    • @HaydnMowbray
      @HaydnMowbray  2 года назад

      Claypool got the technique from Elephant Talk which was written by King Crimson in about 1980. The bass line was written by Tony Levin on a Chapman Stick. Mark Levin would have been more accurate ;-)

    Regret to say that the rythm section doesn´t quite nail the spirit of the original; it lacks depth and mostly power from the bass. Don´t get me wrong for I Think Mark is an astonishing bass player, and he can sing and play that way, at the same time. Not to mention his voice, wich is fantastic; check out his work in Level 42.

    • @Lance37a
      @Lance37a 6 лет назад

      Fernando Marques they made it their own version.

    • @fernandomarques3064
      @fernandomarques3064 6 лет назад

      When you make a version, or a cover, of any kind of music, you must dive into the spirit of the original and try to respect its aim. I first started by stating that I didn´t like the result, when the rythm section is concerned. You can approach a version over various angles, but if you choose to replicate the original tune in the same style, you take a great chance and sometimes things can go the wrong way. In this case, the band sticks too close to the original, but lacking the power, namely in what the bass is concerned. Mark King is a hell of a bass player - one of my favourites - (I have all Level 42 records in vinyl) and I love his voice; for me he´s one of the funkiest bass players in the world, but in this tune, he sticks to the bass line riff, which is powerfull, and we feel something is missing.
      Perhaps the problem relies in the percussion unit, for I too think that BOTH drummers don´t know the stucture of the song very well and even, in some cases, they overplay the two sets of drums. They are two great drummers, and Stewart Copeland, as well as Pete Bilgin, try to deliver their best to the song. Sadly they fail to bring out the identity of the tune, which is quite simple but powerfull. It´s got a deep accent and you can feel that, in Tony Levin´s approach, which has tons of groove. Never forgeting that the original drummer goes by the name of Bill Bruford, who has a drum signature that you imediatly recognise, given the snare sound and powerfull bass drum accent he has. That makes a whole lot of difference.
