Its frustrating to watch this stuff-- the lack of resources, watching that small spot fire get out of control and burn away homes. That's not to belittle the fire fighters that do have, but that they need more resources like a fleet of larger tankers, 10 or 20.

The environmental restrictions do NOT allow the trimming/removal thats necessary. Its been a nightmare for the power company or for anyone wanting to do any common sense defensive work to help guard against possible future issues. California is abnormal in every arena thus the ongoing highly warranted recall of Newsom. The state is a disaster; morally and otherwise.

Dan Koning You hit the nail on the head. The tree huggers and evironmentalists like the Sierra Club have made controlled burning the underbrush in forests so we have so much fuel. I'm not sure what the answer is when its more dry grass and no trees. In Kern County, every new home is required to be built with fire sprinklers. We have a lot on a cliff overlooking the Kern Canyon that looks as dry as this, but we'll be outting fire sprinklers down to the bottom of the property even though not required and keep it sprayed with that green stuff I've seen on Mike Rowe's Dirty Jobs.

Survival Gear Camp: While flying recently a reporter noticed theres approx 20yrds clear cut on either side of the power lines in wooded areas everywhere he flew over; until they got to CA. With some research he found that 1] trees/brush isn't just removed for access, its also removed in case of downed power lines to prevent fires 2] PG&E is restricted from doing this b/c of environmental nonsense.
Every state that embraces democrat ideology 1st: ends up struggling 2nd: failing compared to what was promised them/or what they should be 3rd: they're always burdened by high taxes, unnecessary restrictions, red tape, corruption, and immorality [SF/LA/NY]. Just look at Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Baltimore, Oakland....on/on. America’s 25 worst cities are, and have been led by democrats. Heres a great article [below] to put everything into perspective. Sadly, it won't matter how much $$$ America is swimming in either; we are slowly imploding due to our moral bankruptcy [left/right], and if that doesn't change, America WILL finally self destruct. God removed His hand of blessing from America in the 60s for this very reason, and we've been slowly imploding ever since. I remember when "Leave It To Beaver" wasn't allowed to show a "toilet" on tv; now look at us today...wow. I don't know how you feel about God and the Bible, but read Romans 1 vv18-32; this is what happens to a ppl/nation/society that rejects God after being blessed by Him previously. This will explain it better. "Whats wrong with America" www.gty.org/library/sermons-library/80-112/whats-wrong-with-america God Bless.

why not change the strategy of fighting these wildfires. since there is not enough equipment or planes to fight these wildfires, why not just pour water or chemical on areas that have no fires, but they are on the path of the fires especially if there is strong wind. having so many wildfires in california, the firefighters should be expert already fighting these wildfires even with strong wind. i also think these firefighters should get advice from engineers who are expert on airflow dynamics.

There is a forward air controller in an aircraft over the fire. He decides as far in advance which spot fire to hit. He then chooses what bearing the aircraft will approach on. The problem is that the fire changes between the plan and the drop. It takes a human in the cockpit to adjust but they need to keep their interval and approach bearing.

The super scoopers are made for purpose, not even military surplus, which is a bit of a budget buster, but they seem to have gotten there first, ahead of the fire trucks on the ground, so that is a valid advantage over more trucks, unless more trucks can be based in more places, thus arriving sooner because they are closer, so I would still put most of my budget into converting army surplus trucks, rather than new aircraft. Unfortunately, the military hasn't used seaplanes in quite a while.
The jet is a civilian conversion, so that is efficient, but it might not want to wait around, since the sooner it drops, the sooner it can go get more.

At 30:00 some trucks have arrived, but without cannon, they are pulling out hose and so are not really in action yet, while the aircraft have been in action for some time already, so kudos to the aircraft despite their high cost. But what I feel they really need is more water cannons on their trucks, so they can pull up and spray with no time pulling hose first.

At 53:00 , I have only seen 2 trucks so far, even though I am now seeing enough houses to have their own fire station(s), So either the trucks are hiding under the smoke, or they are awfully slow, which is a good argument for aircraft. Still no visible sprinklers either, which I did see in the Palisades video.

  • @wannabetowasabe
    @wannabetowasabe 4 года назад +1

All the drops made by the "Super Scooper" in this video were ineffective. They have to be flying nearly at the tree tops to keep most of the water from evaporating or dispersing so widely that is has little or no effect. The "Super Scooper" is popular among politicians, the media and the public. This is due to a large lobbying and marketing campaign by this Canadian manufacturing firm.
It might be a very effective tool in Canada where there are an abundance of lakes with smaller numbers of visitors on the shore and in boats. The distance to air tanker bases and retardant reload facilities is probably are greater than in the U.S.
In the U.S. Air Tanker Bases are numerous, here in California the state (Cal Fire) has 24 S2 aircraft at Rohnerville, Redding, Ukiah, Santa Rosa, Chico, Grass Valley, Columbia (north of Sonora), Hollister, Porterville, Paso Robles, Hemet and Ramona. They have a C-130 McClellan and I think 2 Very Large Air Tankers (VLAT-capacities over 8,000 gallons) (DC10 & 747) at Victorville. They have 10 medium helicopter at 10 bases spread over the entire state. The federal government has nine heavy airtanker bases around the state with 9 or more heavy airtankers. Also, there are 4 DC-10 bases, putting all of California within 250 miles from one of them. Plus, they cover 2/3 of Nevada and 1-3 of Arizona at this distance. In addition MAFFS units (Modular Airborne Fire Fighting System) can be loaded onto military C-130's and has bases at McClellan, Port Hueneme, San Bernardino and one at Klamath Falls, Oregon, just over the California border. There are reload facilities at Chico, Castle, Fresno, Paso Robles, Santa Maria, Fox Field (Lancaster) and one at Stead Airport, just over the border north of Reno, Nevada. 85-90% of the state is within 150 miles of these bases and facilities. The federal government has 22 medium and small helicopters, all of which can drop water. They have 10 bases for the large helicopters (helitankers). In addition in southern California 5 counties have 22 medium helicopters. All of these aircraft are available to any agency that orders them.
The "Super Scoopers" have a short turnaround time if there is a useable lake nearby, but water is not nearly as effective as retardant. The "Super Poopers" as a large number of firefighters call them, can drop retardant, but then they are down for as long as an extensive cleaning process takes. There can't even be a trace of retardant in the tanks. How much more effective is retardant over just water? Is it 5 times as effective, 10 times or more? Where I live there was a fire where retardant was dropped along a ridge line. The fire below was contained before it made a run up that ridge. We had a drought type winter, the retardant was noticeable well into the next fire season. Another fire made a run to the ridge top and the retardant didn't completely stop it but slowed it down enough that ground crews were able to build line on the ridge.
A name that sounds like its a great tool "Super." But it is far from that. Experienced firefighters who aren't muzzled by politicians will tell you the "scoop" on this tool. I'm retired from the U.S. Forest Service and was assigned to over 120 fires in my career, many in southern California. I heard the discussions from L.A. County firefighters more than once about this expensive tool being shoved down their throats.

What a wonderful job those pilots do! Maybe if they had allowed rain in CA this wouldn't have happened but then the evil ones would have a hard time explaining. I had to shut of the chat replay too many children or idiots who don't have a clue or are insensitive to know what it means to lose a home.

How about buffer zones around neighborhoods. Water towers, or lakes to hold rain water or grey water from population from showers and diah water. Common people, rhink. LA has a water drainage system there, and I say dam it up to hold water and make a resource for extra water held for this purpose. Extra water from any source is better than nothing.

Fire helicopters need training...Fire helicopters do not accurately aim at targets.Fire helicopters need to slow down and set the correct direction. The pilot of the fire helicopter lacks a lot of experience....Since there are no lakes or rivers in the area, fire helicopters must fly very far...I need an artificial lake or a place to store water there.
