How did I not notice this ? I think I've been subscribed to some of your channels for almost twelve years. 🚬🤔 🚬🤔 At times, comparisons to the music of other composers can be specious and amorphous, but I'm nearly 60 years old so I'm unlikely to stop this practice. Albert Roussel's Piano Concerto and Arthur Honegger's Concertino for piano and orchestra seem to be influences but my timeline may be backwards since I'm not gonna look up the dates for these compositions. Sounds as if even Darius Milhaud may have influenced Markevitch. In any case thanks for sharing another obscure gem on your wonderful channel ! 👏 👍 💃🎆 🌹 🎹 💪 🎵

The slow movement resembles the opening funeral march of the final movement of Shostakovich's Fourth, which was composed not long after this.

I know Igor Markevitch better as a 20th century conductor, interesting to hear a composition of his

In fact, in the 1930s he was considered the leading composer of his generation until he suddenly gave up writing music when he was 29. He never explained why and actively supressed his own music until he was 70. This piece was commissioned by Diaghilev when M. was 16, as noted by another poster.

"L'envoi d'Icare" (The Flight of Icarus) is a magnificent piece, too, which I believe Markevitch score for two pianos and percussion. I believe it's intended as ballet music. And yes, there are vague phrases here and there that sound similar to very brief passages in Bartok's Sonata for Two Pianos and Percussion.

Not bad for a 16 year old composer!
