Interesting. I tried squirrel once about 30 years ago. My neighbor cooked it in a pressure cooker. He made a stew similar to yours. I can't say it was my favorite meat, but I always said, if times are bad, I won't go hungry. Squirrel will be on the menu again. 😁
I did not enjoy it about the first 15 times I cooked it. Tried so many ways until I discovered quartering it first, then just boiling it into falling apart. Add that to anything and it taste like dark chicken.
Took my old .22 out yesterday and killed my limit of squirrels (10). I love squirrel hunting and the only thing I like better is eating them. I've cooked squirrels about every way possible but I really like them in the slow cooker. Another way is to cook them in the slow cooker, debone them and make a pot pie using cream of mushroom, carrots, celery, and onions. No better eating.
That looks fantastic, never had it before but here we can hunt grey squirrel all year round without a license as they are an invasive species. And we have lots here too.
If they are younger I like to fry them. If they are older you can make stewed squirrels with dumplings. Super delicious. I will even make a stew. Depends on what you got to put in it. Get the squirrels fur wet before you skin it to have less hairs in it. This works on rabbit also.
My grandfather used to hunt squirrels. It seemed like my grandmother would always wait till I was getting home from school to start prepping and cooking the squirrel. It always completely freaked me out. I don’t think I will be ever able to do that but thanks for bringing back the memory.
My grandpa ate a lot of wild game during the Depression and he said the more squirrel he ate, the more weight he lost. It is a very lean meat. I have hunted and eaten squirrels for over 50 years and I love them!
I loved it that you described the flavor of the meat. Who knew that squirrel is a sweeter tasting game meat? This recipe is great. I enjoyed about squirrel recipe video that you made 2, 3 years ago. I remarked on that video that the squirrel was the biggest, juiciest looking one I'd ever seen.
Squirrel is some of the best eating out there! They are less susceptible to disease than rabbits, by a long ways. Fox squirrels have a lot of meat on them, more than the gray squirrels. My mom makes squirrel so good - lightly breaded, seared, and then slow cooked in an old roaster. I do the same thing, but it still doesn't taste as good as when she makes them, lol. Have a great hunting season! Maybe you will enjoy some wild mushrooms with your squirrels! :D
Thank you....I love this is information.. we're in the country and have many squirrels around...have thought about cooking some but really haven't had any reference recipes or flavors to draw from...I cook by flavor most of the time... Really would love to see more wild game recipes and videos..thanks!
I thought you were limited to grey squirrels in the UK. I remember Gordon Ramsey featuring a recipe for grey squirrel in an episode of his show "The F Word".
@@710LENNY not to my knowledge. The grey is considered an invasive species and is unlimited. The native red squirrel is protected, but they pretty much only live in nature reserves now.
I grew up in MI and we did use to get a good deal of squirrels running around. But i've never heard of squirrel hunting there. It reminds me of The Beverly Hillbillies. I live in FL now and the way the world's going, i imagine people will be making all sorts of different dishes.
Excellent video! I love game cooked in the slow cooker. One thing I have found out is that it is really easy to make and I have never made any that I didn't like. My wife isn't crazy about squirrel (she claims they are rats) so I eat the meat and she has the vegetables. It is delicious!
I've been hunting squirrels since I was 12-13, sadly where I am now, I am the only one I even know who hunts squirrels anymore, despite the fact that we have a really long squirrel season, six months in fact.
I killed 2 & dressed them today. Last time I dressed a squirrel was with my daddy 50 years ago. I remember mama soaking them in salt water first, is that necessary?
Check out our other favorite squirrel recipe:

LOVE squirrel pie! (Like Chicken Pot Pie) "We will not falter - We will not fail." Thanks for the video. God Bless, stay safe
SQUIRREL!!! A good friend loves to squirrel hunt and i will share this recipe with him. Thanks! I LOVE YOUR TASTE TESTER!!!
Yes, he is pretty camera shy
Poor guy kind of got put on the spot; I never criticize my wife's cooking or I will be doing it all myself! Luckily, she is an outstanding cook!

wonder how this would work on Iguana as we have so many in Florida, I been just putting on the grill.
Now that looks good!!

Great idea!
I am going to try that fur-wetting idea. Thanks!
Squirrel and dumplings is amazing too 😊!!!
Ok I started laughing when I seen it was really a recipe for squirrels. Going to share it. Some of these guys just roast them on sticks.
Squirrel kabobs
@@PrepperPotpourri ahahahah yes
Thanks granny the stew looks great.
Thanks for sharing. Definitely going to make when the season starts.

looks good... need to make this for sure!!
Had some squirrels recently, not a super fan of the meat on them. But I'm going to try this one out this week.
This looks great I’m going to try it!!
Definitely going to make this this weekend.

Hope you enjoy

@@Mark-lj1dj Thanks. I'm in London Ontario. We have lots of black squirrels, few red and even fewer grey. Maybe my neighbours hunt them (heh, heh).

My uncle always called squirrels tree rats
Well, they ARE rodents. But they are not rats.
Here in Virginia, squirrel became a mainstay when the Yankees cut off supplies from the south.
Squirrel is great for when a child is learning to hunt and eat what they kill.
Tomorrow I will remind the squirrels that hang out under our bird feeder how lucky they are.
Prepper, that was very interesting. Thumbs up.
Whats up with the old ladies in the comments just coming here to complain and say ewww gross like kids. Some people are just sheltered forever.
"Tree rat" tastes delicious :)
The squirrels on base are finna start disappearing
Patricia Ribaric sent me here, INTERESTING recipe! :)
I'm a little confused...In your opening you refer to using crock pot...later you say pressure cooker...which one are you using?? Thanks
In this video I used a slow cooker but I have also used a pressure cooker
Did you add any cornstarch to the gravy or just water tomato paste and the mix?
I usually add a touch of cornstarch to thicken
Looks delicious :-)
There are zero squirrels here and I wish there were! I'd make this in a heartbeat. Maybe I'll make jackrabbit stew. :)
How about a cat?
Great video.👍👍💜🙏
CONGRATS!

The meat tastes so good
That would be great over rice or a bed of mashed potatoes!!
For the non squirrel eaters. They have little musk glands in their front underarms. They should be removed.
Very true
How much water did you use with the tomatoe sauce to make the grave?
2 cups water added to gravy packet
thx
Have that over some rice yumm.

I do not
@@PrepperPotpourri Thanks for the quick reply!
👍👍👍👍👍
I thought this was only in fallout 3🤣
Or Daryl in the Walking Dead
Ngl I'd eat that
Only 2!!! I would cook the stew with 5 fat squirrels.
"little rodent" HA! "tree rats" but good eating
Bushey tail rat [ yum]
Nobody noticed the hairs on it when she put it in at first? Had to rewatch it
It is not uncommon to have a few hairs on squirrel. Just consider it extra protein.
@@PrepperPotpourri that was a lot of hair that I saw lol 😝
Fun fact: many American presidents insist on this. Hopefully eating enough of the stuff can make you president of the United States.
Seriously?!
seriously delicious
Clean your slow cooker!
I did!
I'm sorry but I would have to be awfully hungry to eat a squirrel.
Me too. Each to their own. No thanks!
You'd be missing some fine frontier delicacy.
I bet you eat meat from the store pumped full of chemicals and hormones wild game is why our forefathers didn't have cancer
Sorry, but ewwww!
