- Time to check some things off the list and move on to bigger tasks! Today we fabricate that missing brake line clip and weld it to the axle tube, then replace the axle tube boots while we’re there. Next up is to lube the cable guide tubes, install the cables, and fabricate some seals to keep everything working smooth. Finally, we install the pedals and parking brake handle in a frenzy of progress that will set us up for bigger things in the near future!
Please make an effort to thank someone who is on the front lines of this national crisis. If that is you, thanks for being here for the rest of us, and please stay safe!

Awesome videos! Your the Tom Bodet of bus whisperers.
Thanks Jed, that has a cool sound to it, I'll take it! Thanks for watching!
I'm about to attempt to tighten up the shifting in my 74 splitty. I love the video series and have watched them all with anticipation of tackling my project(s). With having a family and the kids sit next to me at times when I'm watching a video, it's a relief to not have to worry about foul language popping up unexpectedly. Thanks for the content!
Thanks for the thoughtful comment Zachary, I really appreciate your viewership and comfort level sharing your hobby with the little ones. Good luck on the '74 splitty (brazilian?) and let us know how it goes!
@@HapticGarage Yes, that's correct. While I'm not new to aircooled, I am to Type 2's. I figured that I'll learn on something with less value than an OG German bus. So If I do make a mistake, it won't make me feel as bad. Plus I can determine if I enjoy them as much as I do the Type 1's.
Good to see that the bus is now another few steps closer to being road worthy! Great video and editing.
Thanks Levi's backyard, always good to hear from you! It was cool checking out the new project on your channel the other day, keep us posted!
Loved the approach, not everyone would take the time and trouble to clean and lube all of those parts. The payback will be longevity. Well done, great content and well executed.
Thanks Aussie Beatle, I'm glad you liked the somewhat detailed cable strategy. I'm hoping it will result in smoothly operating controls and, like you said, longevity! I can only imagine what these vehicles were like new, with every mechanical part freshly installed and ready for a lifetime of service. Thanks for watching and the supportive feedback!
Another great video!! Getting greasy is always fun!
Thanks JW Classic VW, I have to agree that getting greasy has a high probability of fun. Thanks for the support!
Really happy watching your fabrication process, busted out the famous blue dye. And always making smile filling me with joys with the masterclass of video editing and choice in music. Keep up your good work Brother! 👏👏👍😂
Hey Canis Major, I'm glad you like the fabricobbling... more to come! I usually forget to use layout dye, but it was helpful here for sure. Thanks for the supportive comments!
Everything is going to be smooth as butter!
Good video. Cant wait to see it driving.
Thanks Vintage Speed VW, that's the plan! I'm glad you liked the video. Maybe we'll go for a ride at some point. Bug Jam?!?
Every time I watch one of these it takes me back to when I was a kid watching Marty Stouffer on Saturday mornings except it’s Vw’s not wildlife that I am captivated by. Thank you for posting such great content!
Hey thefreers05, that's a good one- I remember that show! "Wild America". We were probably watching at the same time back then. I'm glad you're enjoying the channel and thanks for being a part!
I love the trick with the different size tubes to go around the cable and guide tubes to keep the crud out. BIG THUMBS UP
Thanks vwnut 1967, I'm still not sure if there were originally seals there or not, but ya gotta love using stuff that's laying around the shop. Thanks for the support, and again, tell Patina that Tig says hey!
Grease is the word !! Nice tips on cables thanks
Grease indeed. Good to hear from you again vwcoco!
Hey man Kevin here from Australia. I love what your doing keep the videos coming.
✌ Peace man.
Thanks Kevin, I'm glad you're enjoying the channel. It's great to have you here and have Australia represented!
@@HapticGarage thanks man ✌
Nice work on that clip and good catch on the brake line dimension before paint! Car life...
Hey Dream Wrench, thanks for the kudos! Yup, that's one we learn the hard way. Didn't get me this time!
That's some next level maintenance! Great work.. And the magical place under the workbench had me howling 😂
Thanks GT Bugger, someday I'm going to find that magical spot and leave with every fastener I never found. Thanks for being here!
Great content man! Your edit is on point.
Thanks Old German Steel, it's great to share with this community. Thanks for the kudos!
Wow you are amazing.
Thanks, and right back atcha!
I love your videos! E-brake is handbroms in Swedish!😁😎😂
Thanks Peter Hörnberg, I'm glad you're here! "Handbroms" is close to the German word "Handbremse" that Ali mentioned. It's always cool to learn new things, thanks for sharing Peter! I can't imagine how nice it would be to cruise around Sweden in an old VW. Cool stuff!
Thought that some vw related wind chime hanging out front the shop...good progress...👍🇬🇧
Ya know Vw Rosstorations, that's a good point. I bet I could recreate something for the porch that would be appropriate... and classy too! Thanks for the being here and continued good luck on the metal work!
Otimo trabalho voce faz , muito bom ..... saudaçoes do Brasil
Obrigado Luciano Silveira, e saudações a você também! Fico feliz que você tenha gostado do vídeo e é ótimo tê-lo aqui representando o Brasil!
Hi Haptic Carage,Just came over your channel Nice and calm explanation understandable .greetings HCS
Welcome Hubertus Schaper, and greeting to you as well! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos and I wish you continued progress on your T3 single cab. I'm looking forward to getting back to a lot of sheet metal welding too!
@@HapticGarage Well I wish you also a lot of fun with getting back to New sheet metalgreetings HCS.
Great work as always Haptic! Keep it up! I bet you’re about tired of working with that much grease though after all that!
Hey Vistable, yeah it was nice to move on to the next phase but I still seem to end up covered in grease anyway! Thanks for the support and always being a part of the channel.
Hi dude, just seen your video, and thought i'd give you a suggestion for your brake lines,i used the type of cable bellows like you get on a bike these are reasonably long and with a bit of modification would fit snuggly over the cable guide sleeves, I'm glad i saw this video because my gear shift rod has a little play in it and didn't want to drop the gear box, and you've shown a way of removing rod from the front, I hope that works for me as i own an early bay 1971,so front may be different, but i will check that out to see if removing mine is possible, great video dude, nice work.
Thanks Dave, that's a great suggestion. There is a small bellows style boot for the heater controls, but the bike boots you suggest are bigger and could be a great solution. Cool idea! I hope the front shift rod removal works for you, give it a try and let us know how it works. Thanks again for the suggestion!
Fun video. Enjoyed Tig’s Stan Lee moment. Are Tig and your grease the same color? The only thing missing were Olivia Newton John and John Travolta. I’m going to enjoy seeing you drive this.
Thanks Ken, I was thinking of you when I found a way to get that shot in there. There's no AC but I'm serious about driving this thing to lunch one day.
@@HapticGarage I'd be happy to ride shotgun to Thai Villa. It would be an honor as well as a "thrill" ?
It won't be fast, but in this traffic that can be plenty thrilling!
Great video!
Took my beetle to the mot today and passed
Ironically when I parked it and started it up it took me 3 cranks and when it started it made this awful sound like a friggin washing machine. Maybe theres something up with the carb
Thanks Mr. Skarloey and congrats on the MOT. It's my impression that many of our stateside VW's wouldn't make it through the rust inspection, so passing that test has to be a big relief. VW's are supposed to sound more like sewing machines than washing machines, so I wish you luck in you repairs. You've got to make use of today's success!
Oh boy! The proverbial money shot as it were. Sorry HG 😅😆 23:10
No worries, I guess getting smacked in the face with a greasy wire brush is all part of it. Thanks for watching!
Brent what is the wire bottle brush thingy you used to clean out then lube the cable guides?
Hey Greg, if I remember correctly one was a wire brush for the cleaning and the other was a nylon brush for lubing. Sometimes they're called pipe cleaners or engine brushes (for oil galleries). It's hardware store stuff; Carlisle is one brand. Slightly larger sizes are used for preparing copper pipe fittings before soldering- check the plumbing department for those. Enjoy!
@@HapticGarage thanks Brent!
You say: e brake. Which means emergency brake?
Here in Germany we say handbrake.
Handbremse.
Hey ali bengali! Yes- I think I used a couple terms for the same thing; E-Brake, Emergency Brake, Parking Brake, and I've heard handbrake used over here too. "Handbremse" is new to me, and totally cool! That would be a neat thing to have lettered on the handle by a pinstripe artist. Thanks for the info!
Yes, in Australia it is called a handbrake as well.
Wish I could get me a bus again as a project but $$ keeping from doing so. I need donations to get one. 😯
I hear ya steve, these things seem to be made of unobtanium these days... Hang in there, the market may cool down at some point. Really, any air-cooled VW can be a ton of fun! Thanks for watching and good luck in your quest!
You want to stop by my place and show me one more time on my 67 bus ??? I will make sure not to install the new floor until you are done; plus i will hold the video camera for you and your cold drink.. Iowa Pork Chops and smoke brisket will be done just when we are finished.
Oh wow, I can smell the brisket from here Busman 54 but I'm not sure about a repeat performance just yet...
