What does a Bogey Weigh?

  • Today I put the Bogey's pieces and parts in their spots to finally get the weight and balance! I'm guessing she'll weigh in a bit porky with all the beautiful paint, avionics, and carbon fiber upgrades. I'm just hoping to keep her under 1,080 pounds and nice and balanced. Thanks to Terry for his help and to flightflix.aero a subsidiary of mygoflight.com for the camera mounts!
I'm getting used to my new Insta360 X3 camera so forgive the....creative(?) angles. Super excited to put it through its paces--airborne!

I was just testing out the features. Crazy amount of customization. Working great.

Run 6qts and fill when it gets down to 5qts. Anymore just blows out the crankcase vent tube. Weigh with unusable fuel which is 1 gal. We set the Garmin fuel amount to 40 gallons when we fill up. That always leaves us with well above legal limits for VFR flight. Getting about 7.5 gal/hr is economy cruise. We weigh 9 more pounds than you but we weighed with about 2 gallons of fuel in the header tank so pretty damn close!

I use an X3 and am also a VR quest 3 nerd. So you probably guess where i stand on a 360 video.

Ok! I think my flying footage, I’ll just post long form in 360. Could be sick

Seems a bit chunky unless you consider that an old 172 is 1400-1500 lbs empty. The new ones are even chunkier. In comparison, the Bogey is positively anorexic while sporting a bonus 30 hp and all the shiniest toys. It's a beaut.

Thanks as always, Joe. Always putting things into perspective for me. First flight is this week! Just waiting on the cowl studs and then weather. Then we’ll get the high-end speed number as I break in the engine. 130kts would be sick.

@@CLEAREDDIRECT I think 130kts is completely realistic. The extra chunky, 180hp 172xp, tops out at around 135. I reckon it will depend on how you pitch your prop.

We get about 160 mph true at 3000' msl at 20 degrees F at full gross and throttle firewalled. 2690 rpm.

That 360 footage is amazing. At first I was thinking you’d raised the budget with a cameraman.

I'm curious. Rans has 1000# empty weight on their website. I know that's probably unpainted but I can't imagine 75# of paint. Still, with 725# useful load, you can carry 505# full fuel. Pretty decent for a two seater.

Right. Remember I said avionics and carbon fiber parts? I also beefed up rivnut mounting locations for gear strut fairings and others. I wouldn’t change any of it.

Mine w/ a 916IS and Airmaster prop ended up not much lighter at 989lbs. I have a little less avionics weight in mine, so they’re pretty close.

@@CLEAREDDIRECT Indeed. I wonder what it would look like to mount a 360 where the right seat passenger’s eyes would be (when flying solo, of course). The realistic sight-lines and ability to see the panel and look around could be interesting…
