Ikram is the underrated dark horse of the division. Rob is a true test though, specially since Ikram is in less then ideal circumstances with the double weight cuts and jetlag.

Actually, for a touted but totally unranked Ikram, that literally is true... as he himself said it, albeit slightly differently. They may be only 2 years apart, but Ikram was right. Years before he would even make it to the UFC, Robert, in his late 20s, was already the champ at 185. And, today, he, unranked, gets fast tracked majorly! If he beats THIS resurging Whittaker, he will beat a still prime former champ, not a washed out guy despite the recent upset loss to DDP, the current champ.

Credit to Aliskerov for taking this fight on short notice when NOONE else and especially Bo Nickel 100% refused.
All other fighters refused to take the risk but Alieskerov was up for it. If he wins he deserves to jump in front of ALL the others who refuses this fight cuz they wanted the safer route to the top.

Outstruck Whittaker in 4/5 rounds, dropped him in the first and landed the damaging shots to the legs and body in R3 and R4.

The best fighter in the world should be able to step into the cage not even knowing their opponent's name and still find a way to beat them. Its admirable from both sides that they are taking it on short notice but I feel like this is often forgotten in the fight world
That's true to a degree, but at the highest level, it's obviously beneficial to study an opponent and formulate a game plan to deal with their particular style.
At the end of the day this is a sport and you can think that way but that will not help you with winning the most fights

I said to him: ----- I think Ikhram is a really talented PROSPECT, like Bo, Khamzat et al.
But without an 8 week training specifically for AN ACTUAL ELITE FIGHTER like Rob, who's so good, he became champ in his late 20s.... that Ikram WOULD struggle... because it's not just pure skills at the Top 5. It's approach, pacing, experienced, atmosphere, who the opponent is, etc.
I told him, much as I liked Ikram, without a full training camp SPECIFICALLY for Rob, I would put Rob's chances at 52 versus Ikrham's 48... and that THAT GUY should NOT think Ikram would just run through an actual elite STILL only 33 (just 2 years older than Ikrahm) with one with 8 years more elite fighting experience....

A little perspective…
Khabib: 2x world combat sambo champion.
Islam: 1x world combat sambo champion.
Ikram: 4x world combat sambo champion.
The reason elite sambo fighters absolutely mop up the entry level and gatekeeper tier in the UFC is because that’s a huge STEP DOWN in competition for them. But as we’ve seen, in both Khabib and Islam’s case, they can even run through the elite ranks of the most stacked division in UFC like they’re taking a warmup lap.
If Whittaker approaches Aliskerov as someone “unproven and not at my level” he’s the one in for a rude awakening.
If you’re a combat sambo world champ in any weight class, you’re easily already top 7 in the UFC.
But if you’re a 4x world champ? I’d wager Ikram actually has AT LEAST as much elite level competition as Whittaker-probably more.
Robert is definitely feeling himself, and that’s awesome to see, but I get the distinct impression he has no idea what he’s really up
against. 15-1 in professional mma represents just the tip of ikram’s career. And here’s kicker, nearly all of those 16 fights were against LESSER opponents than what he faced in the combat sambo world championship tournaments.
Did you see how easily he got that kimura in the contender series? It was like taking candy from a baby, and I guarantee you, that other contender series “finalist” (lmao) wouldn’t even qualify for the combat sambo world championships. Dude would get eliminated by the Makhachkala jv regional farm team before he even got near the actual world tourney.
Like most western mma fans and commentators, Whittaker seems completely oblivious to this reality. He’s gonna find out tho.

Ikram had a tough challenge ahead. He'd trained for a 3-round fight against a different opponent, and now he's in a completely different time zone (Saudi Arabia) than where he was originally preparing (America) - all just a week before the fight! Huge respect for his ability to adapt !!!

Aliskerov is a sambo/judo practioner and not a freestyle wrestler who against Whittaker has to employ the Thai clench to get his bodylock takedowns, which will temper his cardio because he'll not be wrestling traditionally. But if he can't push Whittaker to the fence he'll be in for a long night. Unfortunately for Whittaker conventional anti-wrestling does work against sambo because of the judo trips & thus Whittaker has to stay off the fence at all times. If Whittaker is taken down i expect a kimura.

they're just getting started, they just started to get into the ufc a couple years ago. so to compare to other countries that been in this sport for decades like brazil for instance isn't a good comparison.

I agree completely, casuals see someone who looks like a russian or middle eastern and they already say "Oh he is the boogeyman, no wants to fight him, he will be champion, they are undefeated". Meanwhile the Dagestani have only had two champions and although they have other good fighters they are mostly not that special, heck their track record is not even that good compared to some fighters from other countries. Russia and Dagestan has been growing and getting better in MMA, but they are kinda overhyped.
