  • Flashback Friday to this brilliant archive footage from the 1954 Isle of Man TT races, which featured the re-introduction of the sidecar class and the first female competitor at a TT race, Inge Stoll. And it wasn't full bore down Bray Hill from the start back then, but a right turn at St Ninian's crossroads as the sidecars competed on the 11 mile TT Clypse Course.

I was in some detailed conversation with friends recently about the era when Helmut Fath was at his peak. A real uniquely talented engineer and a gritty racer if ever there was. Fath's own engine designs such as the URS 4 cylinder were phenomenal for that era.

Chair racing has always been my favourite motor sport especially at real race tracks like the IOM and Oliver's Mount in Scarborough.

Love Olivers Mount. In Our village we had three road racers. One a solo racer lost his life at the Manx about 1957/8.The other two both raced sidecars at both Scarborough and theTT.I was at school with the son of one He later took up sidecar racing and raced in the TT and Scarborough.Great days.

Hello, I'm wondering if you can help me. My grandfather is Eric Bliss and he won the 1962 TT with Chris Vincent as his passenger. I was wondering if you had any footage of the 1962 TT race with him and Chris racing. This will be much appreciated. Thank you.

Chris Vincent was the driver and your grandfather Eric Bliss the passenger on the BSA as they won the sidecar TT 1962. Your grandfather was a passenger in the TTs 1956-59, 1962 and 1966 with different drivers. Had a 4th with R Mitchell in -56 and 27th -66 with Bill Boddice on a BSA. The others were DNFs with Cyril Smith as driver.1966 was run on the Mountain Course, the others on the shorter Clypse Course.

I was there, along with Peter Noakes and camping gear, went on my 1948 500cc AJS.
The winner, Oliver Smith/ on a push-rod operated valves BSA 500 twins beat the twin-cam operated horizontal flat twin BMWs' .
The three following BMs after the race protested the BSA ,asking for a steward inspection of the engine. They claimed it was impossible for the Brit engine to be developed by a back-street garage, to produce such power.
I think it was Oliver who counter-claimed the BMW s should be dismantled and measured, as it was his estimation that the BMWs should not be able to keep up with him.
This resulted in three black and silver vans rushing post haste to the docks for uninspected repatriation..
Burnt the enamel off the brake drums going too fast down Creg Na Baa..
It rained all the way home to Carshalton .
