    These signature pickups sound tremendous. I already loved the tone on this guitar and now it is even fuller sounding. Great vid!

    Wow, that is some good thick tone! Love it. That shrunken brain sounds amazing!

    The tone difference is probably body size. Plus if they have different bracing. Enjoyed the video. Thanks!

    • @beerbilly
      @beerbilly  Год назад

      its the same guitar, the setzer phoenix but we did a pickup swap. the body size of the guitar nor the bracing was affected in anyway :)

      @@beerbilly Oh Sorry. I thought in the video I heard the mention that the Black Phoenix sounded different than the 6120. My point was it will. If I recall the Black Phoenix is the same size body as a falcon (17" I believe) opposed to the width of the 6120 which is 16". That makes a difference in tone. Plus if the bracing is different. I have several Gretches all with filtertrons. The Bracing and body size definitely affect the tone. I can see where the Setzer Sig PUP cleans up the tone as I have installed it in a couple of mine where the low end was muddy.

      Oh and BTW love my Detroit Casket!

    • @beerbilly

      @@mikegraff509 yep there is a huge difference between a falcon and a nashville, especially the scale length. 25.5" on the falcon and 24.6" on the nashvilles. I share tone differences in nashvilles, like my 6120SSU vs 6120 setzer smoke in this vid here ruclips.net/video/ihj1pBYC-Kw/видео.html

    • @mikegraff509
      @mikegraff509 Год назад

      @@beerbilly oh yea and I forgot to mention the thickness of the body. the newer nashvilles are a bit skinner than the 59 models (Smoke). So yea not only scale length but the build is different enough. Its not something I thought about until I ended up with different models. Would use one as a back up and realize my tone shifted. I have an Electromatic that has the A bracing, but is thicker than my 6120 Nashville, I am guessing what ever wood they use is affecting the tone too. The thing is super heavy compared to any of the pro models that I have. However the Setzer Sig PUP and a decent set up got it dialed in much closer to the Pro models tone wise. Hollow bodies are basically acoustics with electronics. So the build really seams to affect tone. Where with solid body guitars I don't notice a tone shift (minimal if any). Again thanks for your video(s), they are always insightful!

    Great demo, do have the wiring diagram for the wiring in the phoenix? I like the splitted neck pickup

    • @beerbilly
      @beerbilly  5 лет назад +1

      prob on the gretsch site. I dont have that guitar anymore. The Phoenix is wired like the other Setzer SSU/SSLVO the split neck pickup just involves a pushpull 500K pot, although this is not a stock wiring job.

    Planning to buy Brian Stezer set of pickups and put it in my Electromatic G5420,the question is will they fit in,wil they be a direct drop in?

      You would want to contact Tauna at Tvjones.com While they have these pickups w a universal mount, I have no idea what is needed by the electromatic

      If we could go back to 2014, I could remember who bought this phoenix from me so I could pay my rent :) :) FWIW I have a coil split on my tele that has a powertron+ in the bridge, and I have the same thing on the Setzer sig bridge of the orange SSU you see in the video. That guitar goes w me to the grave :) I guess the best description of splitting a setzer sig bridge pickup or neck even, is a lean danelectro lipstick meets ricky toaster. Not anemic but jangly and very flat in the mids. Its basically shorting out one of the coils in the pickup w the alnico bar mag underneath. Its greatest strength, if thats possible.. is in the middle position!

    I just bought my electromatic g5420t and really wanna throw these on there. They have a nice chime, sound super clear and would probably make a great upgrade to my guitar. I compared a Brian Setzer hot rod with the electromatic and the the pick ups were just so out there and amazing ..they made the black top filtertrons sound dull 😅 thanks for the vid! I play reggae most and have found that rhythm and leaf Licks sound great on a gretsch

    • @beerbilly
      @beerbilly  4 года назад +2

      Whats also fun about these newer tvjones pkups is that the coils can be split. On their own its not such a great thing as single coils, but in the middle position w both filtertrons split there is a great extra almost vintage ricky thing. You can use a pushpull pot to engage it, no need for extra holes and switches.

      thats what this video is about. it came w classics... this video was ten yrs ago. I still have Setzer Sigs in my orange SSU. In my current white falcon I have a Classic+ in the bridge w a setzer sig neck. Classics are blurred more in the lows and a tad more snark in the upper mids. a great pickup for the bridge and w overdrive but I want the setzer sig in the neck for individual string clarity and over all better balance between the strings for dynamics.

  • @StickyVinny

    Hey Tavo, I was thinking about coil splitting my bridge pickup: why do you think there isn't a real reason to split bridge Filtertron pickups?

    • @beerbilly
      @beerbilly  9 лет назад +1

      +StickyVinny they really dont have enough "gumption" as a single coil..middle position is cool though in unique way. :) Maybe even the neck pickup as single has some merit as a psuedo acoustic guitar thing with a boost pedal employed..
