in earlier days system was such that brahman can't own land or do zamindari and trade they used to study lot that is they had maa saraswati in their house that is knowledge and vaishya used to do trade and earn money so they had maa lakshmi in their house but vaishay lacks knowledge and brahman lacks money.
He might have gone deep into debts or he might have done by some unaccounted money.
Only being a govt employee can't buy this.
