Ahhh, no. ¿Cómo te lo explico? ._. As a Mexican that has been living almost all my life in México, I have to say that we actually don't care about this things. In other places-like, I don't know, parts of the U.S.-culture appropriation is a very sensitive topic and people have to be careful with that, but here in México we don't care and we are grateful to see our culture in other places. I don't know who told you that but remember that many people that come from Mexican roots but have been living outside of México probably are the ones that can get offended by this, but they already acquired the culture of that place and people around them that are not in México. Sometimes, culture is treated differently depending on the place, but just remember that we actually don't care. There's many people dressing as a catrina or catrín for Halloween and in my school it was always very common to see people dressed like that. Just remember the meaning of El Día de los Muertos and that is not similar to Halloween, that's it. But feel free to use it in Halloween, it would look great. (This actually reminds me to a video of an American using a poncho and a sombrero ahí bien tipo mariachi and asked if that was offensive. Almost everyone said yes and they mention that it was culture appropriation and that it was offensive. As a mexican I'm here to say: No. It is not offensive for us if you wear any Halloween custome along with the make-up, almost everyone does so, so please, if you want to wear this as a Halloween costume, do so, it's not ofensive at all, because the tradition isn't in the make-up, but in the ofrend we do for our loved ones, that's the tradition and celebration, not the make-up, don't mix up things.

This reminds me of a video i watched it says that “culture goes so much more deeper than appearances, it’s abt experiences and lifestyles” and honestly i agree, this is the exact reason why “cultural appropriation” is such a big deal in the US, so many first / second generations have lost touch with their roots and the only thing differentiating them from the other races is their appearance, so when somebody of other race try to enjoy things in their culture for example this make up they feel threatened, meanwhile people from that original country could not care less because their connection to their culture goes so much deeper

A horror convention I go to every year do costumes, tattoo contests and I have a beautiful blue dress I got from Cozumel Mexico when I was 19 and I was planning on doing the makeup for it, plus I'm interested in the culture. In school I took Spanish classes and still trying to learn more. I asked before to make sure it was ok and they said they enjoy it, when people enjoy their culture.
As someone who is Mexican I can tell u, that it’s not offensive unless u are using it as a costume and don’t know the cultural significance of them. Other wise ur good. But I would recommend not calling it sugar skulls, but calling them Catrinas. Because that’s the proper Mexican name for it. Any way❤

Hey, born and raised Mexican here! 99.9% of Mexican folk have absolutely no problem with people dressing up in catrina makeup, or even those "so stereotypical it seems racist" costumes. In general, cultural appropriation isn't really a prevalent concern for most people here, except when we're talking from closed-off cultures of indigenous folk such as tzotziles or tzeltales since clothing is culturally significant for them and not a costume like what is traditionally worn in dia de muertos or even charros and other dance-related traditional wear, which is all at the end of the day a costume for us. Overall, always research that what you're wearing isn't clothing from a specific indigenous group and you're in the clear. Aside from that, usual things that fall more on the "inappropriate" side of dressing in Mexican culture would be to copy the Chola aesthetic, for more or less the same reason as indigenous groups (it's in bad taste to use as costume someone's everyday wear and it singles them out, especially when they've been discriminated for dressing that way). Go forth and have fun with this knowledge!

It's sweet that you're mindful. In my experience (having has this exact Convo with many friends),folks from Mexico LOVE to share their culture. My rule of thumb is to speak with people (which it seems you may have done). And I mean the actual people in said culture,not just 'allys' or 'representatives' online. Many people like to share their culture,and hopefully you'll find the nuance a bit easier to read. Because I'm black I know that some people are sensitive (particularly online) about cultural appropriation but there's lots of nuance involved. Particularly as it stands with the relationship between the black community and America. The type of relationship people have had with us,our role in culture,the way we're seen culturally and stolen from culturally. I say all the to say,speaking to folks directly should hopefully clear up any miscommunication. Because an innocent curiosity or admiration can usually be seen for what it is. Another tip, speak to people in real life. Make friends with other cultures! They will guide you. Folks are uppity and ridiculous on the internet sometimes.
Growing up with it in ABQ, it's always been for everyone and it's always been a wonderful and fun celebration! People of all races and cultures would join in and there was plenty of variety and lots of people dressed up in sugar skulls and such for Halloween. It was just normal. It's not like wearing a war bonnet or anything that *is* closed, it's just a load of fun, especially when you get to learn about the holiday and it's origins. national Park after dark does a great podcast on it (even tho their pronunciations are silly) and they're two white girls. Their whole podcast is great actually.
So this is coming from somebody who is currently learning 3 languages and ive talked to people from different countries. America seems to be the ONLY one who has such issues.In reality most people dont care or find it offensive. If anything the only thing that matters is you are respectful towards it. So for example in japan they LOVE when foreigners try there style such as the kimono all they ask is to wear it properly like it should worn and to be respectful when wearing it. Its mostly an American type mindset that we have created. I find it a bit dumb honestly. Ive always been into different cultures and etc. You cant understand a culture if you personally havent tried to embrace it and experience it for yourself. Think of it as somebody who might have a mental illness. Somebody who has never had depression might be totally confused when somebody who does have depression tries to explain it and how they feel. Some things people feel like they need to gate keep to keep away from others knowledge. People from all around the country seem to be very open when showing there culture and daily life. If anything its probably fascinating from both sides to encounter something you have no experience with. So likes tribes in africa are actually open to people from outside coming into the tribe to experience it and exactly how they live and etc. Its all about having respect for it. However i will admit some things are very meaningful and shouldnt done. For example the feathers that native americans would wear where all from accomplishments and things THEY personally achieved. I find it disresepctful to grab one and put feathers on it just to replicate something so important in that culture. However its hard to know the meaning behind every little thing. I didnt know the meaning behind it till i was like 15 and it just came past me randomly in school i believe and its stayed with me.

I live in the US and have a lot of family that live in Guatemala. but the reason that a lot of people who live in Central America don’t really care about cultural appropriation is because they aren’t constantly surrounded by people who look down on our traditions. Sweetie the day of the dead is November 2nd, some schools even get that day as a holiday. November the first is the " day of all Saints ". In mexican calendars the day of the dead is always November 2nd but i just googled it and it says that it's November 1st and 2nd. So, nah google got that one wrong.

Yes you can use the Catarina make up but if you do your research of speak to Mexicans roots they will all tell you there's nothing gore about it. It's simply colorful beautiful make up. Some people use it as a Halloween costume and make it look gory but that's all just add on they do themselves is not actually meant to look like that. If you're using it as a form as appreciation them I suggest for you to do your research and speak to people with that nationality 😅😊🎉

I wanna say a quick story and I want to know if it's offensive or not I seriously interest myself into culture mythology etc as of rn im learning Mexican culture and I personally interest myself with respect and i wanted to celebrate Día De Muertos but i felt it would've been insulting if i did. I would be so proud if people would try and recreate my Bulgarian culture, food, songs, our folklore dances and dresses. In Europe, we are happy to see when different countries exchange cultural knowledge. It's sweet that you're mindful. In my experience (having has this exact Convo with many friends),folks from Mexico LOVE to share their culture. My rule of thumb is to speak with people (which it seems you may have done). And I mean the actual people in said culture,not just 'allys' or 'representatives' online. Many people like to share their culture,and hopefully you'll find the nuance a bit easier to read.
Because I'm black I know that some people are sensitive (particularly online) about cultural appropriation but there's lots of nuance involved. Particularly as it stands with the relationship between the black community and America. The type of relationship people have had with us,our role in culture,the way we're seen culturally and stolen from culturally. I say all the to say,speaking to folks directly should hopefully clear up any miscommunication. Because an innocent curiosity or admiration can usually be seen for what it is.
Another tip, speak to people in real life. Make friends with other cultures! They will guide you. Folks are uppity and ridiculous on the internet sometimes.

Growing up with it in ABQ, it's always been for everyone and it's always been a wonderful and fun celebration! People of all races and cultures would join in and there was plenty of variety and lots of people dressed up in sugar skulls and such for Halloween. It was just normal. It's not like wearing a war bonnet or anything that *is* closed, it's just a load of fun, especially when you get to learn about the holiday and it's origins. national Park after dark does a great podcast on it (even tho their pronunciations are silly) and they're two white girls. Their whole podcast is great actually.

So this is coming from somebody who is currently learning 3 languages and ive talked to people from different countries. America seems to be the ONLY one who has such issues.In reality most people dont care or find it offensive. If anything the only thing that matters is you are respectful towards it. So for example in japan they LOVE when foreigners try there style such as the kimono all they ask is to wear it properly like it should worn and to be respectful when wearing it. Its mostly an American type mindset that we have created. I find it a bit dumb honestly. Ive always been into different cultures and etc. You cant understand a culture if you personally havent tried to embrace it and experience it for yourself. Think of it as somebody who might have a mental illness. Somebody who has never had depression might be totally confused when somebody who does have depression tries to explain it and how they feel. Some things people feel like they need to gate keep to keep away from others knowledge. People from all around the country seem to be very open when showing there culture and daily life. If anything its probably fascinating from both sides to encounter something you have no experience with. So likes tribes in africa are actually open to people from outside coming into the tribe to experience it and exactly how they live and etc. Its all about having respect for it. However i will admit some things are very meaningful and shouldnt done. For example the feathers that native americans would wear where all from accomplishments and things THEY personally achieved. I find it disresepctful to grab one and put feathers on it just to replicate something so important in that culture. However its hard to know the meaning behind every little thing. I didnt know the meaning behind it till i was like 15 and it just came past me randomly in school i believe and its stayed with me.
as a Guatemalan-we celebrate dia de los todos santos-everything you said sounds right to me. I live in the US and have a lot of family that live in Guatemala. but the reason that a lot of people who live in Central America don’t really care about cultural appropriation is because they aren’t constantly surrounded by people who look down on our traditions. It’s obviously very different depending on where you go because the societal implications are much different. the US is a country built on colonization, and anything outside of a Eurocentric American box can be looked down on or discriminated against. it’s our culture not a costume, so I would say if you’re going to a Halloween party, don’t wear catrina makeup

In mexican calendars the day of the dead is always November 2nd but i just googled it and it says that it's November 1st and 2nd. So, nah google got that one wrong.

Yes you can use the Catarina make up but if you do your research of speak to Mexicans roots they will all tell you there's nothing gore about it. It's simply colorful beautiful make up. Some people use it as a Halloween costume and make it look gory but that's all just add on they do themselves is not actually meant to look like that. If you're using it as a form as appreciation them I suggest for you to do your research and speak to people with that nationality 😅😊🎉

I seriously interest myself into culture mythology etc as of rn im learning Mexican culture and I personally interest myself with respect and i wanted to celebrate Día De Muertos but i felt it would've been insulting if i did. I've seen many people seeing "oh putting sugar skull make up is offensive unless if your Hispanic" or when i was learning about Asian culture i wore a Kimono to celebrate Obon (it just seemed appropriate) and people we're calling me racist and trying to steal other people culture (im caucasian Quebec and seriously i just like to participate in any sorta culture out of pure respect)
This year for Día De Muertos i didn't do anything. Sadly.

I would be so proud if people would try and recreate my Bulgarian culture, food, songs, our folklore dances and dresses. In Europe, we are happy to see when different countries exchange cultural knowledge. Reminds me of that African village that learned Bulgarian dances because they liked the way folklore sounds or Japanese appreciating Bulgarian stuff. I predominantly see people *not from a specific culture* feeling offended on the behalf of said culture.
