I think this is perfect for my uses! I don't want any complicated since it's just to make quick drum grooves and piano loops live while I play my saxophone and sing. I love how quick and intuitive it seems even without a screen! Thank you for your time in this review! ❤️
Why sample loading is slow on Circuits: All the Circuits mount to computers as MIDI devices. Samples are sent and received using the MIDI Sample Dump Standard (SDS), which hasn't changed since its introduction in 1986. SDS is basically a huge amount of 8-bit SysEx data. It's just always going to be slow to send high quality 16/24/32-bit audio data as 8-bit data. Novation and others do this because it's easier to develop drivers for multiple platforms, including the Components web interface, if the instrument is communicating through MIDI since they have MIDI expertise. Novation could potentially develop a different hardware-computer interface that speeds up data transfer, but they won't without pressure from customers, because what they have now works. Changing to a different data standard, would take some time and effort to implement (and the current hardware may not even support it). I think (but I am not certain) that MIDI 2.0 may support higher bit rate for SysEx. Our best hope may be that future firmware updates support this way of speeding up sample dumps.
The circuit tracks, drumbrute impact and the microfreak are the 3 things i tell someone who wants to start. Each on there own are awesome so you can get one and have fun until you have the money to buy another one of them. But with all 3 you have just about everything you cpuld ever want or need to make any kind of music you want! Oh and they are all fairly budget yet super high quality!
I think I’ve finally found the groove box for me. Just realized I can sample a set of diatonic chords into a row of empty slots, and then play them back on the same track. So much easier than trying to do something similar on the Digitakt.
Great review, I've just ordered mine. It will sit very nicely alongside Tracks and quite likely I'll hook in my OG Circuit too.. I love the circuit platform, so fast to work with.
Some numbers for a little perspective: At 80 BPM, four bars is 12 seconds long. That means that a 220 second limitation will still give you 18 samples of four bars, with 4 seconds left for one shots. If each four bar sample is sliced to be used for an eight (or sixteen, or whatever) bar section, you have room for a verse, bridge, and chorus for a total of six songs. Of course, at faster tempos, you can squeeze in even more. In other words, this thing can hold an entire EP worth of samples. If you're smart about how you prepare and organize your samples, you might even be able to get a proper full length album!
Closer to DAWless than the Tracks for sure.. But you still need to connect to do loads of things. I'd prefer a small screen and not having to mess around with Components.
This looks really cool. I recently got the launchkey mini mk3 and have been very impressed by the intuitiveness and user friendliness of it, this looks like it would provide a similar feeling.
Hi! You said that the Circuit Rhythm doesn't have any MIDI-tracks and it does. It has 8 MIDI-tracks, one for each sample track. In fact it has MIDI IN/OUT/THRU and a SYNC output.
Exactly. The M:S would be an absolute classic if it could sample, but I just sold it because I can't be arsed loading samples. Will replace it with the circuit rhythm because it can sample and has a battery
As a standalone thing think this would do more for me than my circuit tracks, but somewhat paradoxically it doesn't do enough as an additional piece of gear. Looks nice and I love Novation's workflow but for once I'm glad to not be GASing too hard on a new piece of gear.
When I bought my Digitakt half a year ago, this is what I actually wanted LOL. I don't need most of the advanced features on the Digitakt, albeit I have to say its a very beautiful machine and fun.
Same... more or less. I got a Digitakt to use as a drum machine and master sequencer, but it turns out it has a ton of shortcomings as a sequencer, and I don't really need most of its extra sampling features, and I can't get samples off it since it requires a proprietary app. So a Circuit Rhythm might actually be better for my purposes. Or, of course, a MPC would be good too.
@@ToyKeeper Take a look at the Akai Force for sequencing, it is freaking insane. BTW, If you do decide to do some researching the Akai Force, just make sure to look at info/reviews that are referring to the firmware 3.0.6, since that version has some really amazing features added like full arranger mode, Ableton integration, multi-midi USB, and an additional Drum plugin built-in (which gives it four (quite-massive-sounding) plugins right out of the box) plus a ton of other new features…. It’s not compact or portable, but it has an incredible amount of features and connectivity (as well as a 7-inch touchscreen, 64 RGB pads, 8 rotaries, each with dedicated displays, etc)… Great thing about the force is a lot of people are still unaware of the new firmware so it is selling at a great price in the used market… Of course, It might or might not fit your needs, but in either case it is a perfect time to look at one just in case it is the former.
@@GearGuy The Akai Force has been at the top of my list for a while now, because it's the closest one can get to Ableton without a computer. Initially I didn't like it due to its limitations, but then they added the arranger mode and it seems like it's waaaay more powerful now.
Hi, I am new with groovebox hardwares and went through your contents and loved it. 😊 In my case, I would need to trigger loops say for 15 different songs in live gigs having around 4 loops for each song. I want to go completely dawless,by loading only the loops (say guitar,drums,pads/strings) in hardware. Can you please suggest if it would solve my purpose ?
Nice informative Video as always Mr Bo :) My interest personally for me was that you would be able to play samples 'polyphoncally' but you can't so there goes my interest. 'Tracks' offers more for ya money imho.. but then I am a synth nerd more than 'drum' nerd haha.
Thanks for this vid. I was looking for a demo of the live recording feature. This looks it can totally work live. Set up a beat, record an extra instrument, include it in the beat and BAM we’re rolling!
Bo did you hear about the Behringer Linn Drum clone? It looks like it's gonna be a sampler too apparently?! I'm pretty excited! Like how neat is THAT? This thing is pretty cool too! It's not my workflow type but tbh there's no good reason for that haha lack of practice probably if anything. Edit: oh, ok this work flow is actually not exactly what I expected further in, very cool piece of gear :)
Great video Bo! You convinced me to stick with the MPC. I love Novation stuff but for a little more money you can get an MPC that does all of this and more, and with a better/clearer workflow. I'd rather menu dive in a menu than a bunch of button combinations.
I'm a hardcore Ableton Live user and I was thinking the same, to go for an MPC. But I must admit I am way more attracted to the "no screen, no menu diving" workflow because i spend like 16 hrs a day in front of a PC. I feel that because in Live I can do ANYTHING, I have a million ways to do the same thing, and sometimes I feel it can affect flow and creativity. I'm feeling this one could work as a nice sketch pad and later throw the tracks into your daw so yo can work properly on it.
Hey hey thanks soooo much for your channel. As a musician but complete newbie to synths i have learnt so much! Quick question, can you make this one into a synth brain like circuit tracks? Thanks 😊
Awesome vid. Always great. Have you figured out a way on Rhythm, when your pack is full of samples, to make space for new ones? you can delete them in Components but it doesnt delete them on the machine. You can write over them, when youre getting near full , but once its full it doesnt even let you do that.
I feel that if you want to do boombap or other similar styles like Lofi, the richness of the stereo image is naturally present because the sample chops are already in stereo. With this sampler you will have to find a turnaround. Would be really nice that in a future firmware update they let you sample right and left channels to two different tracks and somehow chop the the exact same way so you can sacrifice a track for stereo. If that is implemented I would be buying it right now.
I'd be interested in seeing a comparison between the capabilities of the digitakt and the circuit rhythm/tracks combined. Since they're around the same price, that might be a more apples to apples comparison, and you could always drop in the digitone on the comparison if you want to spice it up even more!
Since I have the circuit tracks, I am considering this to expand and make my setup better. Easier than selling for a digitakt since I am familiar with the workflow
Atleast 4 note polyphony per track would make this a whole lot better so we could finger drum and do some simple chords. I wonder if the monophonic limitation is only on record or does it exist while I'm pressing pads and audition. If I could atleast finger drum live that would be nice
I have been a trackerhead for 20+ years, the obvious choice was the polyend tracker. I use it 1 or 2 times a week for the past year. Last week I got a circuit tracks, I can not put it down, making loops all day. I feel sorry for the polyend, but it will be replaced by a circuit rhythm. The no screen is liberating
Hmm I didn't think there was any space left to squeeze in another drum machine/sampler between the Roland TR-6S and the Digitakt, but here goes Novation proving me wrong.
Thanks for the excellent tutorial, seeing how your hands move is very helpful to me. Partnered this with a Launchpad Pro & Circuit Mono Station & a Peak because *Playflow>Workflow*
Thank for the video, very nice explanation. I feel the new Circuits are a bit pricey still. They are nice, but at 400 Euros i would rather pay a bit more for more capable devices. I'm sure Novation wanted us to buy both of the Circuits but at that price it's in the MPC, Deluge, 707 territory already, so no contest there. Don't get me wrong, i really liked the workflow of the original and the original's price was also spot on.
Great video! I’m wondering how you can use it w a synth set up as opposed to just the tracks. Thank you for the great video Bo!!! Got a really good idea of workflow and capabilities/ possibilities with it!
I think adding a bit of attack (turn the envelope knob Just a little!) can help. Sometimes moving start/end can help too. But otherwise theres not much you can do except sampling things with a little air at the start and then adjusting sample start and end so it doesnt click.
Great video as always!!! Now at the a**z*n only 260 euros, I think at this price is a really cool device... one question: I can use one of the 8 tracks as midi out for monophonic synths ???
Thanks, exploring this a little late but isn't sample memory normally referring to ram instead of flash memory, because then the length limitation would make no sense?
Does it have choke groups? I would need to have say: - 4 drum pads, that choke each other when activated - 4 sample pads that do the same - 4 bass - 4 sound effects My plan is to take my beats from ableton and be able to tap them out live. My go to for this would be the MPC one, but it seems like an overkill machine , given what I will actually use it for. Do you think that circuit rhythm would be the right machine for the job?
When I press Prosjects 2 times like you do, I dont get the same row of lights on top like you do, but a square of red tabs in themiddle with some yellow ones in the center. Nothing happens when I press these. Please help. Its frustrating that the tutorials doesnt match
You did a great job breaking down this sampler, but this has nothing on the Mpc one or Roland mc 101. I’ll have to pass on this. Keep up the good work and stay in good health.
Your videos are amazing. I do not have a media card and am trying to load external sounds. I was able to get a sound on the circuit but it didnt seem right. Must there be a media card in the unit?
Love the rhythm I have the mpc one+ now but I will never get rid of my rhythm its an amazing sampler does everything u would need from a sampler from chop pattern chaining chromatic playing scenes tap tempo is an amazing feature too that is overlooked buy people the grid effects are cool ..side chain resample so u can make chords by putting individual notes on each track then u can resample it then chopped em up....I love the mpc but the rhythm is my second favourite sampler it's very portibal too the sample time is plenty like 3 minutes per pack more then enough
Bo good Vidy ! Thanks, Good to see ya ! Can the Circuit Rhythm send a MIDI track to the minilogue and then run the poly output from the minilog back into the Rhythm's inputs like you can with the Circuit Tracks ?
Nice video! Could you use this as sort of like a loop station, create live performances with only this and one synth (in my case minilogue xd)? Edit: what I mean is I want to do be able to record something from my xd and then loop it (quickly, like a live performance), so I can change sounds on my xd and create a whole track with it live. Then also have like a drum beat going on from the circuit
Hey Bojan, you can easily treat it like a live looper with a little thought and preparation. E.g. you can place a step into the sequencer using an empty sample slot. Set the sequencer running, then record your Minilogue XD into the blank sample slot used by that track's sequencer. Once that sequencer repeats the loop is created. You can do this on all 8 tracks too so you could easily loop 8 passes on 8 separate tracks. Just been having fun live looping my Summit this way.
@@-CALC- oh wow thank you so much for your answer!!! Now that sounds great, I think I will get one asap! Edit: do u have a video or something where I can see how the workflow looks like (and listen to your jam :D)?
@@indibiningingman6510 I'm holding a deep dive on the Novation Livestream tomorrow 9pm BST (Weds 23rd June) then the next two weeks after that. The live looping idea will form part of the second deep dive next week when we'll look at some of the more advanced aspects of the Rhythm.
I was pretty uninterested in the Circuit Tracks since they didn't change up must, but pretty interested in this in terms of having the Circuit workflow in a sampler - do you think it could go up against an SP404? I Want to have something solid I can gig with that I don't *need* to have a big set up around but can throw in my MC101 or Microfreak if I feel like it. Lack of chords is a pretty big drawback, but maybe if I used my MC101 purely for chorded samples.
Please can you add it to the Maschine plus explained video once it comes along, I wanted to try the connectivity of it so I can have extra samples and fx, wondering if this is what I need
In some ways this is exactly what I'm looking for, a drum machine/sampler to loop and add to my bass and piano sound, but it would be great if it had better midi capability, so it could be used as a controller for a desktop synth, and in a DAW, maybe they'll add polyphonic midi out later down the line? But for now I'll hold out.
What do you need beside this groovebox to start using it? I have never done electronic music and have no idea which cables and what additional equipment is needed. I want to use a groovebox like this circuit rhythm to make ambient music but have no idea what to buy beside it.
Can u record and make sample packs that way or do they need to be uploaded....I know it directly samples but can you make packs doing it that way cause I hate messing around with computers
This looks very much like a good starting point for someone (like me) who is new to music production. Am I missing something on that, or am I correct..? I think I'm correct given it's affordability.
If you come up with a beat you really like and want to record it into your DAW (eg I use Reaper). Are you able to have it send separate tracks to the DAW?? eg a track for kick, one for snare etc
Video idea - can you please do a review of MOTU Ultralite mk5? Both as an interface and as a digital mixer. 8 line ins, digital ins, MIDI on full ports, 10 DC coupled line out, phone/tablet controls, effects - sounds perfect for Eurorack or DAWless setups.
I have both the Digitakt and the Circuit Rhythm and each has its place. The rhythm has a built in battery so I find myself taking it out more, and the Digitakt has more of a permanent home in my studio. Both get tonnes of use and and have their own flavours :)

What does this device has its own sounds and oneshots? or is it just pure sampler?
Comes with sounds but they are all samples
No synth engine
I can imagine some really creative people making some really cool stuff on this.
Same with any other machine I would imagine....
@@xplo8554 Yes, I agree.
This looks like it could be a editor for launch pad and Blocs wave, made by Novation too. Overall this thing needs a screen editor app.
Thanks for the detailed section about sampling! Any tips on avoiding clicking when looping samples?
I think adding a bit of attack (turn the envelope knob Just a little!) can help. Sometimes moving start/end can help too. But otherwise theres not much you can do except sampling things with a little air at the start and then adjusting sample start and end so it doesnt click.
@@BoBeats Thanks! Makes sense. I find it tricky to get right. (I'd love a ping pong looping mode!)
Was just wondering, you cannot have polyphonic, but if you sample a chord, and you use note mode, would't that do the trick ?
6:48 Bo is flipping us off!
in every single video
In the event I am away from the computer and unable to get to components, can I access sounds from other packs?
Great video as always!!! Now at the a**z*n only 260 euros, I think at this price is a really cool device...
one question: I can use one of the 8 tracks as midi out for monophonic synths ???
Great video. The Circuit Rhythm seems a lot like the Korg Electribe 2 Sampler. Hopefully, Novation will support it better than Korg.
Novation always have great support for products 🤙
does this play nicely with modular? What about that 3.5mm sync? Does it send start/stop/reset 16/24/48/96 ppqn?
Looks like really fun. Dropped my order yesterday. Are there any soundpack on it by delivering? Greetz from Germany! 👾🎧
there should be a factory pack on it I believe.
@@BoBeats Nice. Looking forward to try it out 😉
Thanks, exploring this a little late but isn't sample memory normally referring to ram instead of flash memory, because then the length limitation would make no sense?
Does it have choke groups?
I would need to have say:
- 4 drum pads, that choke each other when activated
- 4 sample pads that do the same
- 4 bass
- 4 sound effects
My plan is to take my beats from ableton and be able to tap them out live.
My go to for this would be the MPC one, but it seems like an overkill machine , given what I will actually use it for.
Do you think that circuit rhythm would be the right machine for the job?
Well… I thought I would be excited about this one but it sounds like the Tracks is the best one for me! I’m keeping it
Yeah I agree Jeremy. I was waiting before purchasing but I also think the Tracks is the one I’m getting.
It’s a great addition to the tracks but not a replacement.
They are definitely different beasts
how do you know how to set the sample audio level when going into the unit? Clipping?? No screen, no audio meter?
When I press Prosjects 2 times like you do, I dont get the same row of lights on top like you do, but a square of red tabs in themiddle with some yellow ones in the center. Nothing happens when I press these. Please help. Its frustrating that the tutorials doesnt match
Does the rhythm record chord progressions of a polyfonic synth?
is there a gain volume for the novation rythm as i find the volume being very quiet even just using the internal samples with max master volume
You did a great job breaking down this sampler, but this has nothing on the Mpc one or Roland mc 101. I’ll have to pass on this. Keep up the good work and stay in good health.
Thanks buddy!
Rhythm or Seqtrak? Whats best to make beats for fun?
With the threshold, does it stop recording when what your sampling stops?
No i dont think so. Generally threshold is only for incoming audio
Great vid thanks! 👍
Can you adjust the swing in the circuit rhythm?
@@BoBeats alright, so it wouldn't be easy to do live performances with this and a minilogue xd?
@@-CALC- where is the livestream? And can it be seen afterwards?
I was pretty uninterested in the Circuit Tracks since they didn't change up must, but pretty interested in this in terms of having the Circuit workflow in a sampler - do you think it could go up against an SP404? I Want to have something solid I can gig with that I don't *need* to have a big set up around but can throw in my MC101 or Microfreak if I feel like it. Lack of chords is a pretty big drawback, but maybe if I used my MC101 purely for chorded samples.
I cant say because I dont know the sp lineup at all
Please can you add it to the Maschine plus explained video once it comes along, I wanted to try the connectivity of it so I can have extra samples and fx, wondering if this is what I need
Can i save my project in .wav or mp3 format on SD ? how can i save my music on PC ?
how do i sample a record into the circuit rhythm?
What do you need beside this groovebox to start using it? I have never done electronic music and have no idea which cables and what additional equipment is needed. I want to use a groovebox like this circuit rhythm to make ambient music but have no idea what to buy beside it.
Can the rhythm sequence an external synth?
Can u record and make sample packs that way or do they need to be uploaded....I know it directly samples but can you make packs doing it that way cause I hate messing around with computers
This looks very much like a good starting point for someone (like me) who is new to music production. Am I missing something on that, or am I correct..? I think I'm correct given it's affordability.
Thanks Bo, good review. Looks to me that this might have the edge over the Roland MC-101. Good price point too.
If you come up with a beat you really like and want to record it into your DAW (eg I use Reaper). Are you able to have it send separate tracks to the DAW?? eg a track for kick, one for snare etc
At this price & with limitations similar to the PO-33, Im prob just gonna stick with my PO-33 for now until firmware updates improve this!
Bo, do you think Novation will have more Circuit variants, or are they sticking with Tracks and Rhythm?
Good question. My guess would be no. I think they will need to update the format
So what about sync to external midi synths what’s that like?
Im Not Happy with my Roland tr8s ,may be ist better with the two novations and my tb3 and quadranid swarm?
I have both the Digitakt and the Circuit Rhythm and each has its place. The rhythm has a built in battery so I find myself taking it out more, and the Digitakt has more of a permanent home in my studio. Both get tonnes of use and and have their own flavours :)
If you could only choose one Rhythm or tracks for you which would it be?
i actually quite prefer the rhythm since im not a major fan of the circuit synth sound
@@BoBeats Makes sense I know that Synth engines are kind of old I’m new to synth so to me they’re good but I do like my synth sound on my electron model cycle more maybe it’s the hands-on for a beginner knobs
