I think there's an explanation as to why Jay was laughing with Brad, and moments later was having a very unpleasant phone call with Lucy. Jay's circumstances hadn't changed, but the person who he was talking with had. Brad likely didn't want to tell Jay he'd just been an idiot, and perhaps he actually found it all to be really great ... but Lucy, who's been part of the scene out there, and had time to sober up, no doubt screamed at him for effing up.
