  • Hi Everyone, Happy Mid Autumn Festival. This festival falls on 8/15 on the Lunar Calendar when the moon is full and the brightest. It is usually between mid September to early October on the Gregorian Calendar. This year Mid Autumn Festival is on September 24th.
In the past, Mid Autumn Festival was a celebration by mainly Chinese and Vietnamese to give thanks to the year's harvest. In modern days, it is a celebration to eat mooncakes, light lanterns, and watch the full moon. Also, during this holiday, the younger generation usually visit the older generation and give them boxes of mooncakes and business women/men would give them to their clients to show respect and appreciation.
Earlier today, I saw a meme comparing fruitcake and mooncake in that it's given as gifts but no one really eats them which I agree with. I think mooncakes are more symbolic than something to be eaten. Their roundness represents the moon and symbolizes unity and prosperity.
Traditional mooncakes are very rich, dense, and very high in calories. The crust is made with syrup, water, flour, and oil. The filling is usually bean paste or lotus seed paste. It may or may not have a salted egg yolk inside. These days you can get mooncakes made in different ways eg. crust made with mochi, filling made with winter melon and nut, etc.
Usually, if I decide to eat the traditional mooncake, I would eat one fourth of one accompanied with tea. Initially for this video, I planned to eat all of the mooncake but it was too much and I only managed to eat one half of the cake. The mooncake I had was made with lotus seed paste and did not have an egg in the middle. I ate the cake with green tea. The plastic knife I used to cut the mooncake was hard to cut with so it made the mooncake look hard/firm but it's actually soft. I would describe the texture as something like creamy smooth thick peanut butter without the stickiness. Overall, the mooncake is very sweet and the tea helped cut the sweetness and wash down the cake.
Have you ever tried mooncake before? If yes, did you like it? If no, are you opened to trying it? Please comment below.
If you enjoy this video, please like, subscribe, and feel free to comment below what I should eat next. I will be posting videos on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well as extra videos on random days such as today so keep your eyes out for them:)

I saw an Asmr youtuber eat Starbucks mooncakes but I don't think they are available in Starbucks in the United States.
