So much fun to be had! Step 1: open the big window outwards to trip the person up 'by accident'. Step 2: once they've got up, and composed themselves, you open the small window and grab them by the ankle. 😄
Well, not the worst apartment we've seen here, but I believe we all agree this is not the best either. Maybe for a lower rent could be a bargain but not for over 80.000.
Lunch looked delicious and a fusion of different cuisines. The only positive about this apartment is that the toilet is not in the kitchen or at the front door.
3:28 Wow the meal is very cheap. I thought it would cost three times more. I like that in Japan you get so many small things to eat so that you have a much wider variety than in other countries.
Rent seems high for a basement apartment with, literally, very little appeal. Location is "iffy", too. Not a favorite. P.S. Thanks for showing us flowers, lawn ornaments, and your meals.
I'll never stay in a basement apartment. A few years ago during a rainstorm a colleague drowned in her basement apartment. Her neighbours frantically pulled up the floorboards and broke through the ceiling but it was too late. She couldn't get out because the windows were barred and the pressure of the water against the door made escape impossible.
Nice lunch, can't say the same about the apartment. In general; Never a semi-basement or basement apartment for many reasons. If something is going to go wrong (water, security, breakage) it will happen to the basement apartment.
Wow, what a beautiful lunch set! Not an inexpensive lunch, but a very nice treat!! The ONLY nice thing about basements is that they are cool in summer. But they can also be very cold in winter. And the lack of sunlight and seeing only ground and people's feet from the window can be very depressing. Plus having an open window at ground level will let in dust and dirt, or the glass will be splattered with dirty rain and snow, from the street and traffic. And the window juts out into the street when it's open!! The steps to get out of the window in an emergency are also on the wrong side 😮 It will also be difficult to use the toilet when the washing machine is in place. And there's no room for a desk. This apartment should be only HALF the price they are asking.
Not a big fan of this apartment. Very expensive and no toilet paper storage. The escape ladder cannot be properly used because the window screen can't be opened all the way. The toilet paper holder seems too far away. I don't like semi basement apartments. Maybe if this apartment was on a higher floor it would be better. Bathroom is a nice size. What about a loft bed to provide desk space...
I only see this kind of semi-basement apartments in Korean drama, and surprised to know you can find this in Japan as well. Maybe it’s good for short-term vacation, but I would not live there for the long term. And, instead of putting a bed, maybe a shiki futon and a table can make more room? Thanks for introducing. It's funny, all those upper floor apartments with the windows greyed out, and this one, that anybody can stop and look into, has the window glass clear. I'd be too afraid of flooding to want to live in this one.
That lunch was superb 😋 and the highlight of the video. This flat is enough for someone that is a minimalist. ooo I wish we had lunches like that heee in Ohio, USA! Guess I could make it at home! The apartment is almost nice enough to rent. However it's definitely a bit too small - no room for chair and desk, or sofa. The rungs up to the window are likely so you can exit there, but the curtains would have to be pushed all the way to the right to give a person room to exit. Thanks Usui, see you on the next one!
I think you're the only other person that noticed. In fact. I think it's designed so that half of that is supposed to be on the right and half of that is supposed to be on the left. you know how curtains open in the middle And it's all just scrunched over to 1 side right now
Feels very small compared to the others. Useful for a minimalist person with little personal stuff. No Toilet Paper storage? Use the very top of the show cabinet for that. The lower sections for just your shoes. Rent is high probably due mostly to the location and/or the exchange rate of the current month and season from what I've learned. I'm always impressed by how creative (and the not so creative) builders build them. Your lunch looks absolutely amazing and at a great price for all of that. The window not opening all the way due to the curtain hooks is not good in case of an emergency. A small sleeper sofa (Futon what we call it in America) could work for both day use and night use. A desk and chair across from it or tv and small tv stand. small coffee table for the small chair, couch, sleeper sofa for your laptop. The possibilities are endless. You just got to get creative with spacing. Thank you for sharing another one with us!!! Also, if you have windows to open, what is the air vent in the wall for?

No loft or steps, no ladder or rope to escape in an emergency, plus the joy of seeing peoples socks as they walk past. Hard to place a desk though, so working might be awkward. I liked your lunch far more, such a selection of tasty goodies.
The bathroom is good and you can store toilet paper in a bin or basket next to the water heater since the to roll is on the wall right there. Or store it under the sink. And for someone who doesn’t like heights this is a good place. 😂 But you may have to break the window to get out!

If I was single and this was all I could afford, I'd move in in a heartbeat. I'd have to use some creativity regarding furniture arrangement, but I know I could come up with plenty of ideas.
As I go to my 12 hour night shift you have made me very hungry! However this apartment, even with the good location, is too expensive for what it offers (no toilet paper storage) and I would always be afraid of someone peeking through the windows! But it has a beautiful little bathtub.

I've seen apartments that I like better than this one (bigger ones) but I LOVE the rolling blind on the closet door! I don't like closet doors and always take them down if I can. I like the closet to be part of my decor. This "door" I would keep! It would be rolled up all the time, but I would keep it attached. 😂 Thank you so much for the tour! 🎉
This one is kinda fun. The steps down are perfect for sitting to put shoes on. I'd rather a built in stove, though. Yeah the curtain thing is weird. Awkward washing machine/ toilet location. That's a no from me. 2 out of 10 inoperable windows

Wow your lunch looked amazing and very good value for money. I’m not keen on the apartment - hardly any storage and the toilet was in a tiny space. The window being at ground level bothered me too, primarily because I felt dog’s “business” and exhaust fumes would come in. 🫣🤭
The area around the apartment looks very nice. I did like the bath space too. Not a fan of the toilet space, having the panels in there feels offputting, plus little storage. I did like that the induction stove seemed to be a plug in, so you could move it for more counter space as needed. The window is the worst. You'd have to pull your curtains aside to open the screen fully to get out, and those bars are installed so far away that even if the screen is fully open you'll still probably bump it. And the bars get in the way given how small the space is. Also having your window level with a busy street means you have to risk people peeking in any time you want natural light. Feels very intrusive. The price seems decent, but the apartment just feels a bit offputting.
What a feast you had for lunch 😊 I enjoyed seeing the neighbourhood & people’s ornaments 🐸 🐻 I did quite like this apartment, it seemed cosy. The separate toilet is a plus, also the bathroom dehumidifier & storage for clothing/shoes.
Affordable, placing of my shrine...I mean, my computer will not be optimal but workable. I would need to adjust a few things, but I can get behind this one. I would never use the ladder with that window though. Maybe convert to a temporary shelving for the little things like alarm clock or charger. Not horrible. :)
The lunch looked amazing! It was like a “tasting menu” in the US, with lots of tiny portions of many things. Or like tapas in Spain, if you could get one plate with only one serving of each thing. Very interesting, and so inexpensive for what was served! Unlike the apartment, sadly, which is too expensive for the space. Not sure you could even put up temporary TP storage, given that one side of the space is the water heater. And you’d better plan ahead when you sit down, because reaching around that corner to the TP dispenser is going to be challenging! If there is enough height for it, a loft bed could work. If not, then a bi-fold futon couch could work, or a horizontal wall bed, to provide space for night and day functions. I liked the idea someone else mentioned of having a wall-mounted, fold-down (or -up) table, with a small folding chair. If you didn’t have other storage under the bed, you could store a folding chair there, or possibly hang it on the wall when not in use. And that “exit ladder” is silly, if you can’t get out of the window! Very poorly designed. Not a fan of the apartment, but that restaurant is a keeper!

I've never seen/tried any of those dishes you showed. It's kind of funny how the everyday to one person can be exotic to another. The apartment is neat since you're not really worried about scenic views when you're trying to sleep, but foot traffic is probably noisy. I also think any apartment over $400 dollars should have enough room for a desk and a bed at minimum. At least it has internet.
That awkward slanted angle makes it hard to set up furniture, otherwise this one is fine. Food was amazing😮 and how cheap too! Rent very high , food very low it seems in japan😅

The rent is too high for such a small cramped apartment. The living area is more of a hallway. Having the living area window at the building entry floor level would be disconcerting for most people. It is definitely a unique apartment. Thank you for showing it. I also loved your lunch meal. The food is always so interesting.
Your lunch would be enough food for me for several days! I'm not fond of the basement location or of the steps inside the entrance. I like the bathroom despite the lack of toilet paper storage. I'd need enough space for a workstation and chair. The price isn't bad for the floor area, but for just a little more there are bigger and better apartments out there!
If the window opened properly you could use this apartment as a mini kiosk to sell stuff :D The best thing to be selling from there? I suggest privacy filters.
Interesting basement apartment Usui! It's not bad, though I think the escape window being blocked from opening all the way might be a drawback.😮 There is no toilet paper storage in the bathroom, but your handy dandy closet could be used for that, though it's not quite as convenient. I was surprised you could fit a regular bed in the living space since it seemed rather cramped. The bathroom was larger than I thought it would be so that's nice. Hopefully the escape window problem can be resolved so that it will appeal to more possible renter's. In all, it's a decent place and I assume the neighborhood is the reason for the higher rent. It is in a nice area!
I really think if you move the ring's over to the other side. You'd find the you'd be able to open window. I don't know why he didn't show that in the video
Your meal looked yummy! Had great track lighting to counteract the fact that there isn't a lot of natural light coming in. I would use a day bed that could be used for daytime and night. Looked like the bathroom was a little thinner than what you are used to filming. A hard time moving around. Storage for toilet paper may have to share with the shoe rack or under the bathroom sink with the cleaning supplies. That window was crazy! Not sure if it was supposed to go in or out. Built in ladder to havevan escape out of the apartment was unusual. Overall, i felt that it was a nice apartment fir a basement/ street level. Until the next one!
After you add a washing machine, you might have to sit sideways on the toilet! And the window opens in the wrong direction to use the "ladder" to escape!
The position of the ladder rungs is strange and the window looking out onto the street is awkward but it's certainly not the worst place you have shown us. At least there isn't a glass door into the toilet! 😅

Yay! Not a high floor! I like the genkan storage. Very practical and versatile. The kitchen is “meh”. Small. Serviceable. I would trip getting into the bathroom. Every time! That toilet is WAY too cramped by the washing machine. Seems very expensive for not a lot of value.
Not bad for a trendy area I guess but the constant foot traffic by the window where a bed would be might be a deal breaker for me. Would I put up with it for access to the amenities and food in Okigubo? Probably 😅😂

The positive is that it has or has the space for everything you need, especially a fridge and a washing machine. The biggest negative for me is the weirdly shaped bedroom. I would probably look for a couch that turns into a bed, so I could fit in a small desk and chair, but that's just me. I would be talking to the landlord about the escape window, that needs fixing. It's doable ... 😊

Greetings Usui. That looks like a nice area to live with green space and nice restaurants. Your lunch looked delicious. A semi basement apartment generally would be okay for me but that one wall isn't square and so the space is not fully usable. I don't like that the window doesn't open all the way. The bathroom is just okay because yay for tub but nay for the lack of toilet paper storage, nay also because the washer placement makes the toilet space awkward. I know rents are rising everywhere but it's already too high for this apartment.
I think the space of the appartment is very fun and could definitely work with a loft bed or something, I personally wouldn't mind if it were cramped up top, I don't mind it being semi-basement either! I do think the window should've opened the other way, towards the wall. Now, even when if you can't open it becasue of the curtainrail, it's just in the middle of the space, kind of a silly design choice in my opinion

Once the washing machine is there, only a very small person would be able to use the toilet, and no storage really except the shoe shelf and the kitchen. And the window is ridiculous! I would not object to semi bsmt, but this is not nice. Depressing.
This apartment is not configured correctly. In case of emergency, who has the time or foresight to (possibly) reach up above the window and screen to move the hook and try to open it completely? Also, why is the ladder on the side of the window and not directly in front of it? In the toilet room, I hope the water heater does not run hot, as it is too close to the toilet. Additionally, the lack of toilet paper storage is unacceptable. Thank you, Usui for this video. ❤
Agree; $560 per month is too much. Need 1) Absolutely need room for a desk and chair, 2) would like room for a couch and a small round table and two chairs.
A semi basement is fine but that emergency escape wouldn't work well. So placing a chair there would serve a dual purpose of a seat and the way through the window in an emergency. Far too expensive even for Tokyo standards for it's size. I hope you shared that delicious lunch with Spiderman. 😁
Hello, dear Usui-san. I admire the delicious meal you had. It looked very tasty. Unfortunately, the apartment is disappointing. The windows needed frosted glass and the steps in the entrance area are a tripping hazard. The rent is too high. The good location in Suginami-ku doesn't really help either.
I don't mind this place at all. I'd be less worried about people seeing me through my windows than in an above-ground place. But it is a bit expensive and I wish that the wall was squared.
I would worry about the possibility of flooding with a basement apartment. Also, I would put a roller blind in front of the shoe cabinet. Also, I would remove or alter the drapery rods over the window. Safety hazard if you can't open the window to get out when needed.

@usui503 ! I'm really shocked you didn't try opening that window with all those little rings on the other side. To be honest, it looks like that's a 4 panel set up. It's going to have two shears on one rail In 2 curtains, on the other rail, designed to part in the middle. If you had parted it in the middle and tried to open the window. I'm pretty sure it would have opened. But you didn't even reach out and push them over to trying open with the curtain On the other side while this apartment was very small The bathing area was surprisingly large. Made it a plus for me. Definitely would be something temporary but I do it.
Your meal looked so delicious! But that was a Ridiculous apartment--you pay for the fancy finishes (like the genkan flooring and the nice ofuro area) but you get no space to live in. Those escape steps are in the wrong place and impossible to use properly in an emergency.
So the window setup is odd. No toilet paper storage unless you use the shelf in the closet or the shoe closet at the entrance. Maybe you could put a small table and chair under the window. While not a bad place, doesn't seem like it would be a longer term type of place unless you are just looking for something simple. Maybe not having the closet would make it a little more useable? You could then move the bed more and maybe get in a small desk and cabinet easier.

As I go to my 12 hour night shift you have made me very hungry! However this apartment, even with the good location, is too expensive for what it offers (no toilet paper storage) and I would always be afraid of someone peeking through the windows! But it has a beautiful little bathtub.

I've seen apartments that I like better than this one (bigger ones) but I LOVE the rolling blind on the closet door! I don't like closet doors and always take them down if I can. I like the closet to be part of my decor. This "door" I would keep! It would be rolled up all the time, but I would keep it attached. 😂

Wow your lunch looked amazing and very good value for money. I’m not keen on the apartment - hardly any storage and the toilet was in a tiny space. The window being at ground level bothered me too, primarily because I felt dog’s “business” and exhaust fumes would come in. 🫣🤭

The area around the apartment looks very nice. I did like the bath space too. Not a fan of the toilet space, having the panels in there feels offputting, plus little storage. I did like that the induction stove seemed to be a plug in, so you could move it for more counter space as needed.
The window is the worst. You'd have to pull your curtains aside to open the screen fully to get out, and those bars are installed so far away that even if the screen is fully open you'll still probably bump it. And the bars get in the way given how small the space is. Also having your window level with a busy street means you have to risk people peeking in any time you want natural light. Feels very intrusive.
The price seems decent, but the apartment just feels a bit offputting.

What a feast you had for lunch 😊 I enjoyed seeing the neighbourhood & people’s ornaments 🐸 🐻 I did quite like this apartment, it seemed cosy. The separate toilet is a plus, also the bathroom dehumidifier & storage for clothing/shoes.
Affordable, placing of my shrine...I mean, my computer will not be optimal but workable. I would need to adjust a few things, but I can get behind this one. I would never use the ladder with that window though. Maybe convert to a temporary shelving for the little things like alarm clock or charger. Not horrible. :)
The lunch looked amazing! It was like a “tasting menu” in the US, with lots of tiny portions of many things. Or like tapas in Spain, if you could get one plate with only one serving of each thing. Very interesting, and so inexpensive for what was served!
Unlike the apartment, sadly, which is too expensive for the space. Not sure you could even put up temporary TP storage, given that one side of the space is the water heater. And you’d better plan ahead when you sit down, because reaching around that corner to the TP dispenser is going to be challenging!
If there is enough height for it, a loft bed could work. If not, then a bi-fold futon couch could work, or a horizontal wall bed, to provide space for night and day functions. I liked the idea someone else mentioned of having a wall-mounted, fold-down (or -up) table, with a small folding chair. If you didn’t have other storage under the bed, you could store a folding chair there, or possibly hang it on the wall when not in use.
And that “exit ladder” is silly, if you can’t get out of the window! Very poorly designed.

I've never seen/tried any of those dishes you showed. It's kind of funny how the everyday to one person can be exotic to another. The apartment is neat since you're not really worried about scenic views when you're trying to sleep, but foot traffic is probably noisy. I also think any apartment over $400 dollars should have enough room for a desk and a bed at minimum. At least it has internet.

That awkward slanted angle makes it hard to set up furniture, otherwise this one is fine. Food was amazing😮 and how cheap too! Rent very high , food very low it seems in japan😅

The rent is too high for such a small cramped apartment. The living area is more of a hallway. Having the living area window at the building entry floor level would be disconcerting for most people. It is definitely a unique apartment. Thank you for showing it. I also loved your lunch meal. The food is always so interesting.
Your lunch would be enough food for me for several days! I'm not fond of the basement location or of the steps inside the entrance. I like the bathroom despite the lack of toilet paper storage. I'd need enough space for a workstation and chair. The price isn't bad for the floor area, but for just a little more there are bigger and better apartments out there!

Interesting basement apartment Usui! It's not bad, though I think the escape window being blocked from opening all the way might be a drawback.😮 There is no toilet paper storage in the bathroom, but your handy dandy closet could be used for that, though it's not quite as convenient. I was surprised you could fit a regular bed in the living space since it seemed rather cramped. The bathroom was larger than I thought it would be so that's nice. Hopefully the escape window problem can be resolved so that it will appeal to more possible renter's. In all, it's a decent place and I assume the neighborhood is the reason for the higher rent. It is in a nice area!
I really think if you move the ring's over to the other side. You'd find the you'd be able to open window. I don't know why he didn't show that in the video

Your meal looked yummy! Had great track lighting to counteract the fact that there isn't a lot of natural light coming in. I would use a day bed that could be used for daytime and night. Looked like the bathroom was a little thinner than what you are used to filming. A hard time moving around. Storage for toilet paper may have to share with the shoe rack or under the bathroom sink with the cleaning supplies. That window was crazy! Not sure if it was supposed to go in or out. Built in ladder to havevan escape out of the apartment was unusual. Overall, i felt that it was a nice apartment fir a basement/ street level. Until the next one!
After you add a washing machine, you might have to sit sideways on the toilet! And the window opens in the wrong direction to use the "ladder" to escape!

The position of the ladder rungs is strange and the window looking out onto the street is awkward but it's certainly not the worst place you have shown us. At least there isn't a glass door into the toilet! 😅

The positive is that it has or has the space for everything you need, especially a fridge and a washing machine.
The biggest negative for me is the weirdly shaped bedroom. I would probably look for a couch that turns into a bed, so I could fit in a small desk and chair, but that's just me.

A semi basement apartment generally would be okay for me but that one wall isn't square and so the space is not fully usable. I don't like that the window doesn't open all the way. The bathroom is just okay because yay for tub but nay for the lack of toilet paper storage, nay also because the washer placement makes the toilet space awkward.
I know rents are rising everywhere but it's already too high for this apartment.
I think the space of the appartment is very fun and could definitely work with a loft bed or something, I personally wouldn't mind if it were cramped up top, I don't mind it being semi-basement either!
I do think the window should've opened the other way, towards the wall. Now, even when if you can't open it becasue of the curtainrail, it's just in the middle of the space, kind of a silly design choice in my opinion

Once the washing machine is there, only a very small person would be able to use the toilet, and no storage really except the shoe shelf and the kitchen. And the window is ridiculous! I would not object to semi bsmt, but this is not nice. Depressing.

This apartment is not configured correctly. In case of emergency, who has the time or foresight to (possibly) reach up above the window and screen to move the hook and try to open it completely? Also, why is the ladder on the side of the window and not directly in front of it? In the toilet room, I hope the water heater does not run hot, as it is too close to the toilet. Additionally, the lack of toilet paper storage is unacceptable. Thank you, Usui for this video. ❤
Agree; $560 per month is too much. Need 1) Absolutely need room for a desk and chair, 2) would like room for a couch and a small round table and two chairs.

A semi basement is fine but that emergency escape wouldn't work well. So placing a chair there would serve a dual purpose of a seat and the way through the window in an emergency. Far too expensive even for Tokyo standards for it's size. I hope you shared that delicious lunch with Spiderman. 😁
Hello, dear Usui-san. I admire the delicious meal you had. It looked very tasty. Unfortunately, the apartment is disappointing. The windows needed frosted glass and the steps in the entrance area are a tripping hazard. The rent is too high. The good location in Suginami-ku doesn't really help either.

I don't mind this place at all. I'd be less worried about people seeing me through my windows than in an above-ground place. But it is a bit expensive and I wish that the wall was squared.
I would worry about the possibility of flooding with a basement apartment. Also, I would put a roller blind in front of the shoe cabinet. Also, I would remove or alter the drapery rods over the window. Safety hazard if you can't open the window to get out when needed.

@usui503 ! I'm really shocked you didn't try opening that window with all those little rings on the other side. To be honest, it looks like that's a 4 panel set up. It's going to have two shears on one rail In 2 curtains, on the other rail, designed to part in the middle. If you had parted it in the middle and tried to open the window. I'm pretty sure it would have opened. But you didn't even reach out and push them over to trying open with the curtain On the other side while this apartment was very small The bathing area was surprisingly large. Made it a plus for me. Definitely would be something temporary but I do it.

Your meal looked so delicious! But that was a Ridiculous apartment--you pay for the fancy finishes (like the genkan flooring and the nice ofuro area) but you get no space to live in. Those escape steps are in the wrong place and impossible to use properly in an emergency.
So the window setup is odd. No toilet paper storage unless you use the shelf in the closet or the shoe closet at the entrance. Maybe you could put a small table and chair under the window. While not a bad place, doesn't seem like it would be a longer term type of place unless you are just looking for something simple. Maybe not having the closet would make it a little more useable? You could then move the bed more and maybe get in a small desk and cabinet easier.
I didn't think much of the apartment, BUT, the meal you had looked amazing and so cheap, do they deliver?! 😉😉
