Said it before, but, I love how humble and kind you are to your audience and in general, just taking us along for the ride like we're part of the team it's fantastic. Cheers Trent, fly safe.
That was a fun weekend. Great factory tour as well. Very talented group of guys building some amazing planes. The Legend cubs we’re killing it in the competition. But you gotta love the performance by Steve Henry! Yes Haw!!
Hey Trent, if you have the carbon fiber floor panels, have them install some stainless steel or aluminum skid plates where your heels rest. My carbon fiber floors in my legend started to get soft spots after only a few years where my heels would rest on the floor. Eventually I had to replace the floor panels, and it is not a cheap job. Save yourself the headaches ahead of time.
Who knew building balsa and tissue model airplanes as a kid would scale up to building a full size. Now I want to build one too. Thanks for the great vid Trent.
Always enjoy your videos, Trent. And, OMG, Hailey looks gorgeous!! Starting to get excited about your new plane. And now, with the dual controls, Hailey will get to be a true back seat driver!
11.15.24 I love to watch fabric work. I was mildly involved in helping cover a Christian Eagle in the early 80s, and I was lost the entire time. I think it is an amazing craft. Thanks for sharing.
What an absolute privilege to be intimately involved with the build of such a significant investment. Very cool company indeed and thanks for allowing us viewers to come along with parts of the build journey. Thoroughly fascinating watching these aspects of aircraft construction and building!
Those chinooks are growing on me. Life's a weird circle I was so excited to replace my weight shift with a "real" plane but find myself missing the performance and ease of the flying go-karts.
Looks like it’s coming along fantastic there Trent. Can’t wait to see it up in the air zooming around those mountain tops. No head over to Utah and see if you can get Mike Patey. He’ll build you a fun machine and you can call it Draco two or something like that. Wouldn’t you love one of those?
I've had a cub now for about eight years. They are great planes to fly by yourself but when I have my wife in there she says the same thing if we go anywhere for an hour or two she gets tired of looking at the back of my head And she gets a little sick back there in the back because she does not have that frontal view
You didn’t tell us about motor you’re putting in new plane but I believe it is the 916 with fuel injection. Isn’t that the same engine that caught on fire recently but the pilot was able to put it on the ground safely from 3000 feet. Miracle he survived.
I hate fabric I always have. But after taking my pristine aluminum plane into the bush, I can appreciate fabrics, durability, and resilience against small sticks, rocks, or maybe even light hail.
Great video. Also, Hailey is kind of adorable. You need to have her in more of your videos. She adds a bit of light-heartedness. Also, she likes to smell engines...%^)
Just wondering. As heat is a part of covering these planes, would it be possible and or more efficient to do the heating in one step, for example like a large oven? Similar to the powder coating process? And this of course begs the question, could a powder coating process be used as a finish on the fabric? Thanks for you time. Seems it would be worth trying on a small sample. God bless.
You could go commercial cargo and call it "Flying Tyres". 😅 Now you know where the expression 'getting tired' comes from🤣 See in the comments how nobody dares to mention those 'bigguns'.😂 You should have them on explosive bolts, just in case you absolutely have to clear some object, like a mountain.😆
Have you had any experience piloting from the rear seat of a dual-seat light aircraft? I am curious as to the future opportunity for some well planned camera mounted shots from the position of the front seat! Is it realistic that you would actually pilot from that rear seat when flying solo?
They use Polyfibre. Have no idea how he kept that container of Polybrush so close to his face, stuff is so toxic smelling. I can't even go near it anymore. Stewart Systems is so much better to use, no smell, easier to apply the fabric, and cleans up with water.
Because I don’t feel it’s as durable as this system and the weight savings we haven’t found to be as good as they say, also I personally don’t think it looks nearly as good
I'm guessing the cost more than anything. After fabricing many aircraft over the years, I am using Oratex for the first time on my current customers build. Apparantly guys like me are the worst to use it for the first time because you basically have to forget what you usually do. It's way more of a pain to apply as you have to glue the fabric as well as the structure, then tough to bond by yourself, you really need a helper. After covering all the empennage, flaps and ailerons, I'm finally starting to get the hang of it. What is cool though is that once it's on and shrunk, your done, and it's very lightweight.
@@TrentonPalmer After using it as described in my comment, I won't use it again. Any repairs after would be a pain as well. You made the right choice, though I'm sure Legend are not about the change the way they do things. Just don't know how you guys could stand the smell of the polybrush ect without wearing a mask.
@@stevebusby55 is the cost that much more. I just called installer from AK, and they quoted me $21,000 that’s sending an installer to my hangar. No need to paint, and supposedly 1/3 the weight of painted fabric. Not arguing, just curious if these numbers are legit.
@@MDaggett Oratex is very expensive compared to Polyfibre. The product cost for the Bearhawk I'm doing right now is $7000 and the BH has metal wings. If we talk Cub style aircraft, then that cost would be closer to $11,000 as the wings would need covering as well. Polyfibre would cost around $2500. Those prices include the glues, and product that goes with each. It takes longer to cover with Oratex but once shrunk, rib stitched and taped, you are done. It all depends what the installer charges per hr, but if I covered a cub style aircraft in Oratex, my labour cost would be around $6000. Polyfibre using the Stewart System would cost about $4000. (Those are my prices converted from CDN to US). With Polyfibre, and using their products or Stewart, and getting to the same stage as the finished Oratex, you then have mulitple coats of different product to apply, including your final paint colour. If you're having the plane built and painted for you, the costs pretty much even out in the end. But if you plan to do the work yourself, and you don't mind painting, then Polyfibre is way more economical. Oratex is very strong and it is substantionally lighter. Polyfibre is just as strong, and I think easier to repair as well. And I agree with Trent that it looks better after as well. Would I use Oratex on my own airplane, that's a tough one to answer as I don't paint anymore. It is kinda cool that once its applied you are done. It comes down to cost and how you want to go about building your plane. Having an installer come and do the job, $21k is not far off as you have to factor in the cost of not only his labour but the costs associated with him coming to you as well.
They used whats called the envelope method. Put the fabric over both sides of fuselage, mark a line where they join at the top as you saw them do, he stapled to help keep together. Then remove, sew the two halves together, then put back on the fuselage.
Yeah, what steve said and also it might be that we covered the bottom then flipped it and started on the top but it might have looked like the same side
@@stevebusby55 Thank you. But in Trent's video they cover just the top of the fuselage, heat it to tighten it, then iron it down... then the next shots are of Hailey helping them drape fabric as you mentioned using the "envelope" method. I don't understand why they took the first fabric off or did that at all?
@@philschlosser That was the fuselage belly they did first, the fuselage was just upside down. Then they flipped it back upright and covered the rest. Normal practice is to do the belly first, then the sides overlap underneath and you don't see the joints.
I don't know. The seating arraignment is a constant source of hmmm from you guys. Whenever you aren't totally 100% you should avoid and not do it. My final prediction; that seating arraignment is going to be problematic for years and years and years to come. You are going to regret it by a lot. I would have asked them to design it as a side by side tandem seat. A larger tail rudder too. It looks too small. 12 extra inches on each wing with wing tip air dams and wing slats. Thats just me I guess.
Just hearing you talk about the engine price depressed me. My build project is dead and half the reason is the absolute moronic increase in the engine price since I ordered my first kit. GA and experimental aviation, IMO, is moving to just being a rich person's sport now. Oh well, I was able to spend money that would have gone to my build on getting my SECOND niece her PPL. Possibly one of the coolest videos for me. Fabric has always been mystical, and this clears up a lot.
Hailey, you go girl !
It’s great to see you helping with new build.
That is going to be an awesome plane. Happy to see Hailey back in the video. She hadn't been seen too often lately like back in the "Old Days".

I'll never own a plane but I watch just for how fricken cool Trent is and I love the relationship he has with Hailey.
Thx Trent and Hailey...fascinating how fabric comes together on an airframe.
Looking forward to first flight.

Always enjoy your videos, Trent. And, OMG, Hailey looks gorgeous!! Starting to get excited about your new plane. And now, with the dual controls, Hailey will get to be a true back seat driver!
Hailey has exactly the correct reaction to seeing the fabric tighten up. That's what everyone does the first time. It's such a cool process.
Haha, I thought the same thing when she reacted that way!
Dang! It's really coming along fast! Looks out-freaking-standing!!!
Very cool process. Thanks for sharing.

Trent, don’t make the mistake of telling you significant other how much you ACTUALLY spend on aviation. Heard it from a friend ;)
My final fear is that when I die my wife sells my tools for what I told her I paid for them.
🤣
I know it's proven age-old technology, but I'll never get over the fact that that's just fabric, glue, and paint. Amazing stuff!
Make sure to get some extra fabric that is stretched and painted the same as your plane for future repairs!
Great content! Maybe need some type of mirror or camera/screen setup so you can see each other's faces.
I was thinking a mirror for sure
WHY DO I WANT A LEGEND NOW! I was thinking of Cub Crafters but I do love A lot of features I have seen on these videos.. Keep them coming!

Polyfibre has to be shrunk in multiple steps, increasing the heat each time. And no, you cannot powder coat fabric.
Please leave your gopro at the paint shop...with your plane..

even tho ill never get one🤪🤣
Wait a second, what is that Kitfox doing there in the back? Wasn’t it sold?
