I studied at Rutgers Newark in the 90' s, the ironbound was my refuge away from the sad campus. I could enjoy pastries, find decent bottles of wine and meet friendly people.

-Man it's nice seeing the old neighborhood. When we were small in 1965 we moved down there & stayed until I went in the Marines in 1980. Went to East Side H.S. 1975-79 across the street from Independence Park you were in. Some buildings are still there others are gone now. Lots of memories around there. East Side was a mix of Portuguese, Blacks, Puerto Ricans & Italians, & others. Good times & bad, but still good memories. Now I'm a 63yr. grandfather. Used to be more people out. Some moved away, died, etc. Since people got smart phones & computers there's less people out now. Nice.

I grew up in the Ironbound on Darcy St. 1960s-1970s. My family moved to the deep south of Texas on the border of Mexico.. You have no idea the culture shock Ive been through. I sure do miss "The Brick" Before all is said and done in my life. Im gonna Dj a set in Newark. As a Dj Ive made a name for myself as a Dj in Texas. Texas is a really big place. Currently holding a residency @ Sugars San Antonio Tx.

I grew up "Down Neck", a.k.a the Ironbound section and very happy to see that Andros Diner and Kalibat's pharmacy are still there. I've walked Ferry Street countless times and this video brought back great memories. Thank you, Manny.

Andro's diner was called the " Spotless Diner" back in the 60's and before. "George" worked as a cook then bought the place. 2AM stop off after the bars closed!😂😂 I'm 74 and across from the diner was the Rivoli Theatre, closed in the early 60's. Those were good times !😅😊😂❤ I'm 74 and I was at the Ironbound Theatre on Ferry St. with my father watching a Polish movie . Had to be 1957 !? So much history! Home if Ballantine Beer!!❤😂

Ironbound has always been my favorite Newark community. Welcoming people, AMAZING food. I really hope they can fight off these high-rises that seem to suck the culture out of any neighborhood they spring up in. I think they make sense for areas that are worn down and in need of investment, but this is not that. Every time I'm around there it's clean and people take care of their property.

Great video. I grew up in Elizabeth, but left NJ in 1979. Heard a lot about Ironbound but sadly, never went there for a visit. Newark gets a bad name but this video sheds a good light on Newark. Great work, keep making these kinds of videos.

Props, Manny. I used ta spend time down there a minute ago, doing deliveries to various businesses. The food is great, and has been for a good long while. I already see the changes from just a decade ago, but that's the way it goes. Still has the culture and the vibe, though. Let's hope that holds on as we move along.

Love that joint, good cigars, awesome food, and some of the best sangria. My girl is from Portugal and lives near Fall River in MA. I love Jersey and I'm from the west coast, but you guys know how to put it down!

I moved away from Newark/Irvington area in the late 60s. The city was in really bad shape then. Though I never went there I always heard Ironbound was an Oasis in the middle of a desert. Back then it was vast majority Portuguese. I have often wondered why Newark hasn't had more positive development. It's greatest advantage would be its convenient location to NYC.

I currently come from Baltimore to deliver lumber to a spot on Emmit and “A”. My truck is big so I can only enter from 21 @Murray. So all I’ve seen is that industrialized area. I had no idea there was more “Down Neck.” Also, I’m Cape Verdean. So the Portuguese/Brazilian people made me feel welcome. Até depois!!

The Ironbound was Italian, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Irish and Spanish in the 1970s and 80s. Brasilians and South Americans were few back then. Now, Brasilians are a significant majority.
