'When you don't care at all what anyone thinks, you lose your capacity for connection; when you are defined by what people think, you lose the courage to be vulnerable' I just realised that these words correspond with what Brene says later on. She talks about leaders having the dilemma of being vulnerable, but not too vulnerable. That is why vulnerability seems so terrifying. People associate vulnerability with total openness, one that shows absolutely everything about you as if being vulnerable meant 'I will let you decide what you to do with my weakness and act in total accordance with your decision'. The equation vulnerability - boundaries = no vulnerability is so vital to understand that. You have to have boundaries, inner guardians of your mental well-being. Vulnerability allows you to open up, so that you do your work to the best of your knowledge and abilities, but boundaries are there to remind you what feedback is necessary to improve your performance and what feedback is aimed at your sense of worth, functioning in that respect as a bullet speeding up to destroy the force (creativity - which comes from being vulnerable) which brought you to the front in the first place. Boundaries are filters. They are a must-have you cannot get at half-price when the sales storm in. You build them on your own. 65:00 Art and shaming in school: I recall when i was about 5 years old, we had to draw a self portrait. I never had done this before, but i noted everyone else was drawing curly hair. I didnt have curly hair. I drew it straight. But i couldnt figure it out properly. I knew hair grew OUT of my head, so i drew straight hair,pointing out, sticking up. Also, since the entire class was using browns and black crayons, there was only red left. To me, form was more important than substance, so i used the red crayon. I got the "passive aggressive" comments about "interesting self portrait". From that point on, at 5 i knew the teacher both didnt care, didnt understand, and wasn't interested in my struggle, nor able to provide me means to success (i.e. asking why red, and why spiked hair, just a rush to silent judgment. Right then, i knew shame was a manipulation because alternatives or help wasnt forthcoming. I learned to dismiss it early in life. I knew the teacher was blaming me for her own failings. ) 30 years later, i was jumping around the bedroom naked in front of my new girlfriend and she said "you have no shame!" - Ah, its funny now i look back... but sometimes, you just got to be proud of your little victories! And dance. Naked or not.

As an Empowerment Coach and author I run a Spiritual Book Club and we are reading Daring Greatly. An inspiring book and I decided to watch this video which is amazing as is Brene Brown. I want to comment on a topic at the end of the segment when she discusses her research about the damaging shaming that is done in school. I have know this unfortunate statistic for a long time and it seems to be getting worse. It is not only attacking creativity but what it destroys and sometimes forever is young people's self-worth and the fall out of that is catastrophic. We have created and allowed this as a society and we have to fix it. Thank you for showing this and thank you Brene for being a totally authentic beautiful being.
Chase, killer interview with Dr. Brown she said a few things toward the end of the interview that hit very close to home. My process for one reason or another has been broken. I have been a photographer since I could hold a camera and a pro since high school and I'm 59. My creative process has been broken for a few years now. I have not produced anything that I truly love in too long. The fallout from this lack of creative juices has been toxic to say the least. I can't thank you and Dr. Brown enough for making me aware of what is going with this broken toy! In fact to go a step further this realization has got me going and I have a book in mind about the human condition. I can't shut the noodle off the idea's are flowing none stop. Keep up the great work I find it most interesting you are a great photographer yet you also are addressing the needs of the artistic / creative community as well. Thanks again Mike

I feel like Macklemore is able to do whatever he wants because he has no respect or validity to lose in the hip hop culture. I appreciate his positive message that represents his perspective and he's lucky for having it at the right time and place but his voice in his lane of hip hope culture can't be compared to other lanes. Success and lifestyle were quite strictly defined for the hip hop community that came before him. His authenticity (like all great artists) lies in respecting the art form and not just a format as Lupe Fiasco says. Im happy the art form is also being respected by young children who are removing the lifestyle and culture's limitations with their appreciation and discovery of it through social media, I'm excited to see the future! I leave this comment with great gratitude for this show and the passionate people behind it. :)

I would like to thank you guys for this video. It is a sad reflection of our current society that this is something that needs to be discussed and learnt, rather than already a part of our early upringing. Regardless of being a part of the creative "balm" as diescribed, it really needs to be something that is addressed much earlier in life, especially with the growing Social Networking of our youth. I have a daughter whim whom I have worked very hard to have her aware of what can happen both on-line and "on-life", and I am glad to say that I she demonstrates a very realistic sense of proportion and sensability. It has taken me many years to learn a very important lesson which carries me through every day: You can't control what you don't own, and you don't own nothing but your choices.
I have read every one of Brene Brown's books (about to start her latest Dare to Lead), and somehow I missed this episode. She is truly an American treasure, and one who I "connect" with so deeply. I will meet her one day, and probably bawl my eyes out from the enormity of the moment. Thank you Chase for bringing her on multiple occasions to your show. I hope to meet you one day as well.

My Christmas included Rising Strong in hardcover and I could not put it down. I had learned recently of Dr. Brene' Brown while on a google search which lead me to watching my first Ted talk. I believe it was the vulnerability talk. Floored me in the best of ways. Now I had a direction of where I needed to go in the new self I was designing. Today I have enrolled in this semester of CourageWorks. It may not matter where we start I think as long as there's a place to begin.

Being afraid and being brave is so on point with in my life today and what Brene brown states and illustrates about being vulnerable. I have to be vulnerable so that I can be inspired to push my self to do what i feel I must do. I also think that the folks in my life who question quitting my job to do this are afraid that i can not help them financially. are creative folk introverts? Wow that hit home too. Would like to share with you something about vulnerability in therapy: psychologists tell their patients all the time that vulnerability is so much braver than remaining "stoic" or holding it in--with allowing yourself to be vulnerable (in a safe environment) you believe in yourself that you have the strength to get through it, survive it, and be ok. That is strength and bravery!
Brene browns talk is so powerful. It touches on ever emotion I’m feeling and thought that comes to mind as I work through my own vulnerability. Definitely need to use some of her tricks to work through this.
I am so glad that Ms Brown defined what creative is. for sometimes I questioned weather I was creative. now I know that it is in the doing that one is creative. very good point and that also makes me feel good. that for that point. I love that idea that Chase Jarvis gave about creativity creates every thing in the world is just a wonderful concept.
Man, the world doesn't have any idea how broken it is and we are looking for the answers is all the wrong places, and such limiting places for that matter!!
I am a recipient of Brene's online courses and I can say without a doubt it is lifechanging. I am in fact at my art journal now with my stickers and coloured pencils it is the best relaxing therapy and I love to go to Michaels or Hobby Lobby to buy my stickers and art supplies and my journal is lovely. I'm trying to launch my career in banking now, but since the age of 5 I've learning academic art. On my professional profile I have put examples of my artwork in addition to banking-related credentials in order to show my other "non-boring" side. And guess what? One person told me that I should remove that and tailor it exactly to my resume. Not gonna do that, I have finally found harmony with my creative gift and I'm not abandoning it ever again!
As unfortunate as it is that that one person might be right in some ways... it depends, plenty of "corporate/boring" employers might read it and see that you're creative and think they're flakey, another might read it and think there's a problem solver, I want to work with them. I should also mention I know a few HR employers and the leisure activities they apparently like to see are things that a group activies. Hope this was somehow helpful, even though it seems a bit ambiguous.
These podcasts from waaay back in the day was one of the factors for me to take the leap and build my own production company! It 9 years ago this year :D
I think what Brené says around 1:03 about finding your tribe is crucial. I also think realizing that any naysayers are on their own journey of potential unhappiness and shame can help you have compassion without internalizing their unconstructive criticism.

32:40 Yeah, that's pretty much how a lot of people view self-publishing. I mean, because there are no gatekeepers, a lot of unpolished work does get through, but I feel it's worth it so that the few people working their asses off can release their work unchanged by a traditional publisher. That's why I'm self-publishing my own novels, and Brene's words on vulnerability definitely help me remember to be as raw and authentic in my prose as possible.

It is a sad reflection of our current society that this is something that needs to be discussed and learnt, rather than already a part of our early upringing. Regardless of being a part of the creative "balm" as diescribed, it really needs to be something that is addressed much earlier in life, especially with the growing Social Networking of our youth. I have a daughter whim whom I have worked very hard to have her aware of what can happen both on-line and "on-life", and I am glad to say that I she demonstrates a very realistic sense of proportion and sensability.
It has taken me many years to learn a very important lesson which carries me through every day: You can't control what you don't own, and you don't own nothing but your choices.
I have read every one of Brene Brown's books (about to start her latest Dare to Lead), and somehow I missed this episode. She is truly an American treasure, and one who I "connect" with so deeply. I will meet her one day, and probably bawl my eyes out from the enormity of the moment. Thank you Chase for bringing her on multiple occasions to your show. I hope to meet you one day as well.

I really love that observation that between the values of “avoiding vulnerability” and “being brave” is bluster and bravado. It makes so much sense. And yep, it’s everywhere.

Creativity is the new literacy! Wow. I can see myself embracing this concept ~ starting today! Thank you both ever much. I look forward to reading the first books. My Christmas included Rising Strong in hardcover and I could not put it down. I had learned recently of Dr. Brene' Brown while on a google search which lead me to watching my first Ted talk. I believe it was the vulnerability talk. Floored me in the best of ways. Now I had a direction of where I needed to go in the new self I was designing. Today I have enrolled in this semester of CourageWorks. It may not matter where we start I think as long as there's a place to begin.

I am also really proud to know that I have come to some of the conclusions Brene is sharing here, but as a Child it was hard to put Wordss on it and as an adult it is so hard to show people that they are trying to put you in the crazy category sometimes because they dont have the guts to stand out with you. Great stuff! Just found Chase Jarvis about two video before this one,looking to improve my photo knowledge since I am 60 and wanting to make being creative work for me in my life. As a living. Being afraid and being brave is so on point with in my life today and what Brene brown states and illustrates about being vulnerable. I have to be vulnerable so that I can be inspired to push my self to do what i feel I must do. I also think that the folks in my life who question quitting my job to do this are afraid that i can not help them financially. are creative folk introverts? Wow that hit home too. I push there too! but I want a voice too. creativity is the key of how things travel from the head to the heart to the hands. I love that. great conversation.
Brene Brown- thank you for your candid and inspiring words! Would like to share with you something about vulnerability in therapy: psychologists tell their patients all the time that vulnerability is so much braver than remaining "stoic" or holding it in--with allowing yourself to be vulnerable (in a safe environment) you believe in yourself that you have the strength to get through it, survive it, and be ok. That is strength and bravery!
Brene browns talk is so powerful. It touches on ever emotion I’m feeling and thought that comes to mind as I work through my own vulnerability. Definitely need to use some of her tricks to work through this.

I am so glad that Ms Brown defined what creative is. for sometimes I questioned weather I was creative. now I know that it is in the doing that one is creative. very good point and that also makes me feel good. that for that point.
I love that idea that Chase Jarvis gave about creativity creates every thing in the world is just a wonderful concept.
Man, the world doesn't have any idea how broken it is and we are looking for the answers is all the wrong places, and such limiting places for that matter!!

I am a recipient of Brene's online courses and I can say without a doubt it is lifechanging. I am in fact at my art journal now with my stickers and coloured pencils it is the best relaxing therapy and I love to go to Michaels or Hobby Lobby to buy my stickers and art supplies and my journal is lovely. I loveeeee this book and woman!! This has changed my life, I previously believed that for me to be a strong, successful and capable woman I needed to be NOT BE vulnerable, let very few people in and confide in even less. My eyes are now opened because its not a good way to live, its pretty lonely at times. I'm trying to launch my career in banking now, but since the age of 5 I've learning academic art. On my professional profile I have put examples of my artwork in addition to banking-related credentials in order to show my other "non-boring" side. And guess what? One person told me that I should remove that and tailor it exactly to my resume.
Not gonna do that, I have finally found harmony with my creative gift and I'm not abandoning it ever again!
As unfortunate as it is that that one person might be right in some ways... it depends, plenty of "corporate/boring" employers might read it and see that you're creative and think they're flakey, another might read it and think there's a problem solver, I want to work with them. I should also mention I know a few HR employers and the leisure activities they apparently like to see are things that a group activies. Hope this was somehow helpful, even though it seems a bit ambiguous.
These podcasts from waaay back in the day was one of the factors for me to take the leap and build my own production company! It 9 years ago this year :D

I think what Brené says around 1:03 about finding your tribe is crucial. I also think realizing that any naysayers are on their own journey of potential unhappiness and shame can help you have compassion without internalizing their unconstructive criticism.

32:40 Yeah, that's pretty much how a lot of people view self-publishing. I mean, because there are no gatekeepers, a lot of unpolished work does get through, but I feel it's worth it so that the few people working their asses off can release their work unchanged by a traditional publisher. That's why I'm self-publishing my own novels, and Brene's words on vulnerability definitely help me remember to be as raw and authentic in my prose as possible.

Bravado to me is my "stage character"......... Vulnerability allowed shame and judgment to show its face, this meant boatloads of fear, which is the producer of a smaller me..... small is safe..... (OLD MESSAGES, OLDER STORIES) ....thank you Brene for your courage and dedication.

Brene and Chase....check out a book called "Orbitting the Giant Hairball". It was written by a guy I worked with at Hallmark. He is no longer living, but he really dealt in this book with the issues of creativity in schools and workplaces. It is a charming book that really has spoken to me.
