Expecting OP to let her kids mess with expensive equipment is completely unreasonable. It’s one thing to provide help to a friend in need, but it’s another to disregard the boundaries and property of the person actually paying rent in the home
Not to mention it was his JOB equipment. He's not fooling around with a 3k top notch equipment (for what he described it's video editing, voice/sound recording, any multimedia gig really) he's working to pay rent and make a cushion to afford his next steps. I'm a believer in that if someone trashes you on social media, you go to the same social media to tell the truth, in this case OP needed to let the rest of the family know about the free loader Kelly and how his mother picked her over her own son. You don't get to say "but family" while picking an outsider over your own relative.
Yeah. "I paid rent to help mom out, but I was not allowed to even enter the room I paid rent for, and was not even allowed to enter to get my stuff. They disrespected me and did not care about my feelings at all, did not want to compromise on anything and ignored me and did not believe me when I told them I would move out if I was not allowed to have the room I paid for multiple times". lay out like that, and anyone that takes her side is not worth your time of day
brats don't pay rent. As a tenant/boarder, OP has rights. And his things are his, they are not his mother's property and she has no legal right to interfere with his personal possessions. If the room is taken away, stop paying rent. Once the room was taken away, mother broke the tenancy agreement, so there is no notice requirement any more. Mother is TA here, she doesn't understand her legal responsibilities to OP as her tenant.
I've seen quite a few women place their friends above their kids. They usually have to go crawling back to them when their 'friend' stabs them in the back.
Unfortunately this is too accurate. My MiL is like this. She expects others to pay for her decisions. Oh, my friend just needs a little help. It’s way too easy to give away other peoples things. They are shocked when they see the consequences of their choices. It’s like cause and effect is token in their brains! Oh and I am the female! So some of them don’t make sense to us either
He used the wrong argument. Shouldn't have said that he was kicked out of his room but that he was kicked out of his room and office. That he was falling behind on his work because he could not use his equipment and was not even allowed into his room to get his stuff because the kids like it and they had the right to play with it. It was not about the room, it was the fact that is was impacting his work, the work that was helping to pay for his mom expenses.
WRONG! OP's mother is too much of an idiot. This was about power and control and no argument would have worked. Nah...the only move was to leave and let her see what her own stoopidity cost her.
I was looking for someone else I thinking that, the whole time I was thinking "this is keeping him from earning money for rent. is she just not aware of that???"
The term to use is constructive eviction. When his mother basically banned him from using the room he was renting, he has the right to stop paying rent and move out. If the heat was turned off, or the plumbing broke, it would be the same thing.
His mom is a criminal. It is a crime to do a self help eviction. He should have pointed that out and how selfish she was. She doesn’t get to be Robin hood. She broke the family by putting an outsider above it.
Wouldn't be a contract, so she can just claim he was helping the family, not paying the rent, unfortunately. Also means she can't demand he pays that extra month rent though"
My mother tried the same thing. I told her off. She tried to kick me out and made her aware of the landlord tenant act. Took a few years before I talked to her again. We are on good terms now. Sometimes people just get used to things and take advantage of it.
When renting a place, there is an agreement between owner/landlord and tenant. Simply, I pay this much for this space to live in. She went and broke that agreement by giving the rented place to someone else. That absolves of rent or having to give notice to leave. Essentially it is an illegal eviction. They evicted you.
Treating him like he doesn't matter isn't the problem lol. It's the violating all his rights as a tenant. He pays, he has rights. Beginning middle and end.
Whether he's paying rent or not is not even the point. I am a mother myself and it is customary for us to have as many generations in one household. Everybody contributes, not necessarily financially, and we don't consider rent. To give back to family is natural for us. But in this situation, the mother is totally in the wrong. Why and how on earth can trying to help mean at the expense of another, especially family who is also a productive member of the family? And what kind of "friend" would be so entitled to even think that they deserve so much more and shamelessly infringe on another's rights and privileges? That is simply wrong on all counts.
I think what he meant, and what I am thinking as well, is that the OP took way too long to decide to move out. And one very sus part in the story, if the equips are so expensive, why haven't he pack them all out on the first day he discover his room is being invaded. So greedy and selfish of that mom, not to mention lazy and entitled of Kelly. If your kid pays rent, you do not allow others to invade their space. Tenants have rights, it doesn’t matter if it is your property. Unfortunately OP probably didn’t get a thing in writing, which was dumb. Always get it in writing, document all violations, and install video surveillance as well as save any broken items or proof of ownership/value for stolen/broken/lost items and obtain a copy of your state’s tenant rights.
Not so dumb. Ny having nothing in writing Op was able to just pick up and leave. No lease, no prorated rent, no responsibilities. Op should have immediately stopped paying for Mom's phone plan. That way he wouldn't be getting all those messages, lol.

The two siblings were way younger. She’s probably getting child support for them and if she kicked one out of their room the dad would find out. She went after the oldest who was earning their own way thinking he would be easy to gaslight

The first thing I'd have done after her nasty-posting would have been to take her phone off my plan so she lost service. She can pay for THAT on her own, too. No way would I pay for her to post lies about me.
She doesn't love her older son the only reason she kept him around is merely to help her financially and to not feel alone since her husband run long time ago!
Would have been nice with a bit more at the end, where the mum is humbled and apologized for everything instead, and Kelly realised how she ruined her friends family by being selfish etc.
this sound kind of like my situation with my older brother. After he got married and his wife move in. she think she is master of the apartment. started making up rules trying to be boss of everything. she did everything to force me to move out. not knowing my brother was a freeloader. he wasnt paying anything. i keep complaining about his wife being and he keep defending her. so after i got tired of it. i move out. not long after they beg me to move back in. but i refused. i block them and ignore them
Hell no NTA!!With that said just stop pack up everything and leave. Never look back. Your mother made her bed so let her lay in it since she made her choices see you don't owe her a damn thing nothing so go live your life in peace. Let her oay her bills matter of fact let her get her friend Kelly tonpay those bills and block her. Her bills are her damn problem now block her!
I can only speculate, but even if the guy's room was the biggest in the house, the "master bedroom" and the mom only took a small room, since she only needed it to sleep, it is strange to me that the obvious sollution of her sleeping with the friend there and kids using the guest bedroom was never entertained.
To stop the kids using his computer all he had to do was set password protection on it until he moved out. (I’m wondering if Mom and Kelly aren’t bedmates?)
His mother took away the tools of his trade so his work production went down since he was unable to use his expensive equipment. I would have responded on social media and put her on full blast since she only aired her grievance to embarrass him. Mom should get a job or a second job to support Kelly since her friend can't afford rent or child care. Her friend will be at home relaxing while mom does the heavy lifting. Her vision will clear up real fast since she is not seeing her actions clearly.
Ops mom and her friend Kelly have no respect for other people's property. I'm sure if OP broke something of theirs worth $3k they'd have a hissy fit and demand payment.
You shouldn't have told her nothing just let yourself in and grab all your stuff and leave! I went through a situation just like this with my mother I gave her the heads up went to work came home after work and she had set all my things that I had boxed up out on the curb and it was garbage day so all of my stuff got picked up by the garbage truck which left me with nothing! Well long story short I took my mother to small claims court and the judge ruled in my favor and my mother had to pay me $5,000 in damages plus an additional $2,000 for pain and suffering because she threw away all of my babies pictures, baby clothes everything so yes I made her pay for it all. I never looked back and to this day i totally r fuse to even talk to or be around her. Why life's entirely too short to deal with narcissistic people who think they can treat you any type of way.

Always sign a contract!!! Family or not!!!
The mom picked a Friend over Family. That's always stupid policy. Especially when the family was has been supportive.
In case you didn't notice, the kid's paying rent.
like narrators voice. best ever
No wonder that 304 is getting divorced.
She should have thought about that before treating him like that. If he doesn't live there why would he pay rent?
TikTok made me go here. 😅
His mom made that choice for him I don’t get how families do this and are surprised by the consequences
After he got married and his wife move in. she think she is master of the apartment. started making up rules trying to be boss of everything. she did everything to force me to move out. not knowing my brother was a freeloader. he wasnt paying anything. i keep complaining about his wife being and he keep defending her. so after i got tired of it. i move out. not long after they beg me to move back in. but i refused. i block them and ignore them
Mom should have given her room to her free loading friend
This is why Kelly’s husband is leaving her lol.
That's interesting.
To stop the kids using his computer all he had to do was set password protection on it until he moved out. (I’m wondering if Mom and Kelly aren’t bedmates?)
First thing I would have done was cancel her phone plan...
Two words. Block button.
2 more
contract cancelled
2 more
new sim
2 more
HA HA
His mother took away the tools of his trade so his work production went down since he was unable to use his expensive equipment. I would have responded on social media and put her on full blast since she only aired her grievance to embarrass him. Mom should get a job or a second job to support Kelly since her friend can't afford rent or child care. Her friend will be at home relaxing while mom does the heavy lifting. Her vision will clear up real fast since she is not seeing her actions clearly.
I think he paid rent for that room
Send damages to STBX or see if he needs a roommate and move in with her ex husband
Ops mom and her friend Kelly have no respect for other people's property. I'm sure if OP broke something of theirs worth $3k they'd have a hissy fit and demand payment.
Why did his mother not get a job? And the 15 year old siblings could earn a bit too.
Kelly would have looked after the house and minded her kids.
You say you don’t know what to tell the family tell the truth
First of all, Kelly can get a job. And why are the siblings not helping out. It sounds like his sister is at least 18.
i can see why kelly's husband kicked her out.
He should move out and just let the chips fall where they may.
How did the mom expect him to pay the rent etc if he couldn't work in his room and use the equipment he needs for work??? Very dumb😮
