The last couple of years I've found myself going back to what has proven to work for me. That old Opinel pocket knife. Those old chain saws. Built boots. That's all in my comfort zone. My wife hates that i wear boots all the time, but that's me. I need to find one of those old 3/4,or one tons with an FE. Back to my roots.
Man Billy Ray, you really brighten my day friend. I am a welder and ironworker & frankly I hate it, I dream of cutting wood all day. I’ve been watching your videos on my lunch and I forget all about my job!
I’ve seen these called hay hooks as well, maybe they are a little thinner, not sure, but same looking tool. Hope to get feedback from you all. Two months into my journey as a saw man with a residential tree crew in North Carolina. Holler back, anyone who sees this! Stay well my friend. Love you billy and fans ! This is a special man
Hi Buckin, from Australia and just gotten into collecting firewood for the family. I love using my chainsaw and have learnt so many things from you regarding the chainsaw, even things such as how to buck a log. I truly appreciate your helpful videos and also your kind and positive life messages you incorporate. I lost my father at a young age so did not not learn many valuable lessons, but having amazing people like you on RUclips has helped me learn those lessons. Keep it up Buckin Billy Ray, with thanks and blessings From Melbourne Australia.
Billy, i think i came across a video of you talking about sobriety which i can tell you have "the serenity about you" i celebrated 12 years on thanksgiving.
Such great advice my friend. As I've aged and (hopefully) gained a certain amount of wisdom, I hate seeing people walking around looking like they've lost their will. Hold that head up, put those shoulders back and stand up straight and tall. Not to be arrogant but to take the world head on. Eyes wide open...you'll probably see that bus coming and time to effectively react.
We call them pulp hooks around here. I’m old enough to have used them piling 4 foot pulp wood on a trailer lol. I use them piling wood sometimes but it’s quite a bit slower.
Put up 25 cord mostly by myself and worked a 50 hr a week job. Started cutting wood labor day with a 572 and my fire axe harder spliting rounds I like the old 8lbs wesco all wood was hulled with one of my 60s Fords just work steady not fast enjoy the work as long as we don't have snow I'll keep cutting. Buckin does the same fire wood getting I've done for 35 years love the Show thanks Buckin from Laclede Idaho.
Thanks for the smile. It is good to be aware of your surroundings, keep a eye out for that bus! You must be a Virgo, cause we really like physical work. There is Definity some internal joy when the task is completed no matter how tough it was. Keep spreading the word.
Buckin' I am a newer subscriber, I really appreciate your work ethic and have picked up a lot of wisdom from your videos. I see the change God has made in you from your older videos to now. Keep pressing into faith in Christ the world needs more buckin Billy Rays.
I enjoy watching your videos when I can. I burn a lot of firewood at my place. So your firewood videos are interesting to me. It is coming up on Christmas time. And my wife will always ask me what I want for Christmas. I usually tell her that I don't need anything. But this year when my wife asked me I simply said that I would like to have a wood hook. I said to her that Buckin Billy Ray uses them all the time and swears by them. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge.
Had a pickaroon for years and it's definitely a must have. Bought the hook just over a year ago thanks to you Buckin' you are definitely on my eternal grateful list. People look at me like I'm crazy when I pull out the hook and it quickly becomes the favorite.
i got myself 2 wood tongs for grabbing rounds out of the bush. game changer. just need to make sure the log is 16" or a bit shorter lol. still works though and no bending down
I know you have reasons, so why don’t you get the truck closer to what you’re doing? I try to get the bumper almost on top of the wood pile (of course leaving enough room to work). I really like that old crew cab and the way you set up the box.. Im finishing up an International S1724 dump truck soon to use for that and many other tasks. I like the dump box, but it is REALLY high to throw into..
As an artist. I saw the moment at @14:20 and suddenly before me is a perfect sculpture of natural wood. It even cut perfectly on the sides too. Such a gorgeous piece of timber right there. I’d dig it out and put it in the living room.
Billy Ray. I didn't realize you're from the Great White North. Beautiful British Columbia. You're just north of me. I live in Everett, Washington, USA. I'd love to meet you. Meet the Legend.
Just came in from splittin' People if you haven't used a pulp hook, try it! Its so useful and there are at least 2 tricks you can do that buckin' didnt show. But these tricks cant be done with big wood like that but you can pick them up with the hook and stack them in the left hand. But the most important is the side flick with the hook, its another technique for throwing
For a pulp hook to be most useful it has to be most handy. I wear mine on an axe holder on my belt so that I have it ready for a quick draw. I can keep my fallers axe and pulp hook on the same loop, they wear well together. Get the pulp hook with the replaceable tip like Buckin' here, don't get the cheaper non-replaceable tip, not because you'll ever replace the tip but because the balance is much better and the added weight helps to stick it in a bite better. I've been using them doing fall and burn for beetle kill wood across northern BC and northern Alberta since the 90's. A pulp hook is an essential tool, carry spares!
Now I know what I’m doing with the old True Temper Kelly double big I found rotting away in my fathers shed (was on top of a shelf that has become a hotel for a certain furry critter, or two, who has very much moved in years ago) that I am restoring! Although, I don’t think I want to grind down one side into a pick 😂
they made those at a old blacksmith here in norway with birch handle. i have a original. handforget. Maybe a new idea for a addition to The woodbullet ? the woodswinger ?
Thank you! I am a tad bit older than you Buckin and also have back issues, and also throw a lot of firewood. I have never considered one of these hooks. I am ordering one today.
Ever thought of coming to Australia and doing some tree falling and wood hooking? Would love to see you here, particularly Tasmania. We’ve got some amazing species and very very tough wood to split! Anyway, love your videos! Keep it up
Hey Buckin Roy from the great Northwest in Oregon, I’m watching your recent video, and I see you have the wood hook out again ; you’ve taught me so many things about the gullet & hand filing etc ; love ya bro & you’re always positive message; been watching for 4 yrs at least; keep up the good stuff & God bless my friend 😊👍👈 ps i have 3 wood hooks & they are great to use ; Thanks Buckin 👍
Those Kelly Dandenong's are no joke. The one I repaired the poll on on my channel recently is going strong and splits like hell. Good morning one and all 🤘
Man Bucking, I was chopping wood for years by hand, but now I have a wood spliting machine that is tractor run, and also has a big 2 t pulley with 30 m of cable to bring in the logs which are cut to 1 m of lenght and then splitted. A lot less effort… they are then stacked and cut to proper size of 33 cm right before winter….you also have a wood spliter right? Why don’t you use it, your back would be thankfull 🙂
Since I was a young kid I have always loved mucleing 💪💪 through wood 🪵🪓🪓🪓🪓🪓🪓🪓🪓🪓 I'm only 29 and I split firewood anywhere I can and even for free because it's my passion. Jordon block. Holy cripes…this guy can split wood like it’s nothin…..he’s the kind of neighbor ya need when you can’t open the jar of olives…I bet he doesn’t even need to bang it on the counter like me….
Great tips for the wood cutter, handler! That bark on some of those blocks looks like Balsam Fir… or is it all Douglas Fir? Awesome video as usual, we should be seeing road trip footage soon!?
Those hooks are also referred to by farmers as a “hay hook”. In other words, I don’t know what the proper name is, but I do know that those hooks with a handle are extremely handy!
I sure wish killenger would go back to getting handles made or atleast give out the guys name that made them for him because he’s the only guy that made 22” and 24” curved handles for boys axes and I miss them
Singing 🎶 right off the old wood block… like mother like son. Sweet.
I don’t know if this comment made much sense but your Mom’s singing 🎶 is sweet & your sound is much like hers.

Billy we called those Hay hooks down in Oklahoma, used in some aspects of hauling hay back in the 1970's👍😁 🇺🇸
Hay hooks are made a lil different on the hook part but yea they work for that kinda
@@rockkhound943 yeah I know that I lived in both Washington and Oklahoma
The wood hooks are so handy I even bring them on the boat to help me pull 600 pound tuna in the boat!!!

There is therapy in wood my friend.
Billy: I'm surprised that you are throwing away the bark.. There is great burning in it, and it's brilliant for starting a fire.

Us east coast men call those “wood” hooks “hay” hooks. Lol.
Ahwoooo get one 👍
What is the difference between those and a hay hook? I assume tip?
Size and girth and swivel wood handle
They have a carbide replacement tip.also a little heavier.
Mainly in the tip yes
