I can't imagine an interview like this today. Deep questions and answers without all of the theatrics, drama and interrupting. It's enough to have a great writer and an erudite and prepared interviewer. What else is necessary? Thank you for the reminder.
Marvelous interview…… I’m reading again some of Isaac Bashevis Singer’s stories poignantly translated by Saul Bellow from Yiddish to English. As an exile in America some 35 years, Bellow reminds me that looking back (Lot’s wife) might afterall be enriching. Miss jenny
A brilliant interview with a seriously brilliant writer. I loved it when he laughed at his character’s wit. Some beautiful descriptions: ‘She was hardcore vulgar’; ‘people have crisis chatter - they have what the media have given them -these are often fictions not facts’; ‘Charlie suffers from boredom, a form of spiritual suffering’; ‘Humboldt’s Gift is a preumtuous book that attempts to make a comedy of death.’ Thank you Bellow. Oh, and ❤New York isn’t representative of America, Chicago is.
What a delight to find this interview, thank you for sharing this clip...'the other day I was thinking about sloth and how much despair it covers up'. Ahhhh I love Saul Bellow. The bit about white slavery or what we call Human Trafficking - absolutely the chilling truth.
I'd love to see it too but it seems like one of those "Village Intellectuals Only" masterpieces that would have only played in the Bleeker Street cinema together with "Dinner with André" or Robert Downey Sr's "Greasers' Palace", before the great dumbing down.
