Shannon LaNier Discusses Complicated Family History and Thomas Jefferson

- Thomas Jefferson is remembered every Independence Day for being a part of Constitution and writing “All Men are created equal,” however Jefferson owned more than 600 slaves. Joining “Start Your Day” is the sixth grandson of Jefferson, Shannon LaNier, to talk about his family history.
LaNier never had to really research his family history because he grew up always knowing that he was related to Jefferson. Growing up, no one really believe he was a descendant of Thomas Jefferson, until his mother came to his school and verified LaNier's story.
LaNier talks about having mixed feelings toward Thomas Jefferson because on one hand, he wrote those famous words about everyone being “Equal” but on the other hand, Jefferson didn’t really do anything to free the 600 slaves he owned. LaNier says, “He could have done more. And for that he really missed the mark and he is a coward.”

He actually took advantage of his slave who was a child , and they consider him such a great man . He was also a racist who thought black people an inferior race.

2. Defenders of Jefferson as a "moral" character often cite he was "a man of his time."
3. #2 is undercut by his friend Tadeusz Kościuszko, who in his will left Jefferson $20k and requested he free his slaves at Monticello. Jefferson refuse to do it. Said he could not administer the will. Had the chance to ACT on the words he put on paper. He refused to do it.
4. Jefferson knew that he made a 4% profit on the babies that his slaves produced.
5. Jefferson, as brilliant as he was, was one of the chief architects of the US white-nationalist ethno-state.
That is the history every HS student should be told.

There are more falsehoods than facts in most comments.
Shannon's lips are bigger... jefferson's lips are thin... shannon's eyes are rounder, fuller face, jefferson face is thin, probably smaller teeth,thinner body... Shannon is fuller muscular body.
I'm actually surprise they don't look much different than that considering that it's 8 generations away. That's a strong gene right there.

@@maximillianramirez1189 Slavery is not due to come back ,but how it is told must be fixed . As long as the descendance of the enslaved are around we would make sure the true and raw history must be told . Teaching things like slaves were workers ,and slavery wasn't that bad and was a choice ,we will not stand by and let that happen.

What.. Jefferson hated slavery. He inherited his slaves and tried to free them repeatedly. But he couldn't under Virginia law because he was in debt. Over 20 times Jefferson worked pro bono as a lawyer both defending slaves and helping slaves getboaoer work. The very first law he tried to pass as a Virginia legislator was to try and end slavery. The VERY first thing he did as potus.. day 1.. was get rid of slave importation.. then he sent ships to stop the West Africans from selling slaves to ANYONE. He wrote over and over about his disdain for slavery.

@@kahlilboi he inherited them. Doesn't make it right.. but for years he tried to help to end it all and free his. LITERALLY his 2nd day in office he banned the import of slaves. His second week in office he sent navy ships to Africa to blockade the slave trade.m

African Americans now look up to the massai.. for 1000 years all they did was take other Africans as slaves. Took millions and millions. And look how black folks all fly the Ghana flag.. Ghana was the largest slave exporter in the world FOREVER. Sold millions of slaves to other Africans, asians, Arabs.. for 1000 years before any white man showed up. Africans enslaved Africans..
