  • this is from the laserdisc Ron Hays Music Image: Odyssey. here is some more information from Siggraph:
    "Ron Hays
The New Television Workshop at WGBH supported the creation and broadcast of experimental works by artists. One of their projects was the Music Image Workshop, which was primarily a project of Ron Hays, who used the Paik-Abe videosynthesizer to create elaborate visual scores set to music. It was funded by the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts from 1972 through 1974. Hays worked closely with WGBH producer and director, David Atwood, to create both live broadcasts and finished works. Additionally, works by other artists were presented under the auspices of the Music Image Workshop.
Hays later produced a short film with Michael Tilson Thomas, called Space for Head and Hands. It was an improvisation by Hays with piano by Thomas. He also produced animation for the Julie Christie movie Demon Seed, and a video art compilation of music, computer graphics and art for Odyssey called Ron Hays Music Image. This animation was produced using the Scanimate system. "

Yes, it was made by the artists at Image West. The Scanimate was a large wall-sized analogue computer made in the late 1960's. There were only a few of them (only 3 that I knew of). Image West was in Hollywood at that time, but later moved over the hill to Ventura Blvd. I was there later in 1984-87ish, when the place closed. The feedback effects were most likely through the first ever Ampex DVE. (I believe they had the first). Ampex later improved the DVE, not allowing feedback. Image West was the first special video effects studio in LA. We also had the first Wavefront and Symbolics 3D system in LA. (Wavefront later became Alias-Wavefront and then Maya, owned by Autodesk) Several of the Image West artists from these earlier years are still active. Ron died in the late 1980s. Frank Serafine (audio effects person) was in charge of Ron's videos. Frank died two years ago - hit by a car. I do not know who has the rights to any of Ron's videos at this time.

Totally agree. I got into computer graphics R&D in the 90s and now got bored with it (doing something else now). Once it left the experimental stage and became commonplace all over the silver screen it's lost its magic. We need to get back to the basics! Chunky low res graphics & colour banding! :^D

Very cool. I remember that odd horror movie Demon Seed. Still one has to admit the limited technology that was being used was being stretched infinite with the music being an integral part of the overall experience. Thanks for upping this stuff!

early computer graphics and animations is a lost art form. i loved it in the 80's and i remember slowly losing apreciation for it as it was being abused by hollywood. it just doesnt seem to have that new and exciting feel to it.

Don't know if it's called Delta 1 because that's the title of the chapter in the original Laserdisc or it's Delta One because of the song by Synergy.
