I think it is worth mentioning that, for the excellent options that you propose for creating the negative voltage, the builder needs to consider the current draw that the negative voltage rail will be required to provide. And, of course, thereby specify proper components. For example, the voltage drop provided by two diodes is sufficient. However, the one amp rating of a typical 1n4001 may not be adequate. Or, if a resistor divider network is used, the wattage rating needed for the resistors may be quite large. Meeting the amperage requirement is often the biggest challenge, in developing a simple negative rail. Just a thought I wanted to share... HTH. Cheers.
