My dad said when I was a teen: My willpower is at the store.
If you don't bring it home, then consuming it is harder.

Agree - I've come to appreciate the "substitution" idea. I was able to pretty much stop drinking by replacing my "Making dinner glass of wine.." with a kombucha, or tea or another placebo drink.

Of course substitions. The old get lost and a new one come up. Who needs those kind of habitant* around .

Also, I have had a veracious consumption of caffeine my hole adult life. I also had a grandfather that drank TANKS of the stuff. I also figured out at age 44, that I had ADHD. Ding ding ding: dopamine seeking behavior. So that's the role it was filling (along with lifting the crushing mental fog so many people with ADHD experience). When I got proper meds, my caffeine consumption fell. Along with biting my finger nails, morning and afternoon snacking, among others. So some of our habits fill a role as a balm to a symptom, but dealing with the core problem makes chasing symptoms less necessary.

One of the best things for me was mindfulness meditation. The workbook called 30 Days to Reduce Stress by Harper Daniels was super helpful.

You have to replace bad habits with good ones before they waste your time and energy.

I have come to a conclusion that you cannot completely get rid of all bad habbits / sins , 1 will always stay.
If I stop smoking n drinking i will play video games, if i stop playing games i will start gambling, if i stop gambling i will watch porn, if i stop porn and start nofap i will start scrolling on instagram.
Its just a never ending loop of dopamine.

Have you thought about what substitution habit you are okay with picking up before stopping with your current one?
For example, maybe a certain video game is okay cause 1 round takes 1 hour and it’s less hard to stop after that.
So basically brainstorm what activities could maybe still fulfill enough of your dopamine craving without to much negative consequences.
Physical activity is also dopamine, but is prob not easy enough to start and do often.
There are fantasy web serials that come out every weekday (with a game-like feeling and focused to bring dopamine) that’s 20 minute dopamine without having access to more, if you can have the discipline to only read 1 story (or only 2 stories for 40 min, etc.)
If it’s true for you that at least in this period of your life you can’t get rid of an (last) bad dopamine habit, than acceptance is fine of course. You could choose the least bad habbit that you know still works. And maybe come back to try again years later.
But I don’t know you, feel free to think whatever you want about the advice :p
