She yearns to escape from the limitations of her life with her beloved but overprotective grandfather at the remote way station. Luke, a gambler on the run from a posse for murder, seeks shelter from the storm. A stagecoach arrives, with a driver and two passengers who also seek shelter for the night. Luke soon takes them all prisoner, but after a night of tension and trouble, Adam is able to overpower him and deliver him to the posse. Adam finds an unexpected assist from Luke as he helps the stationmaster and his granddaughter find their way to a new life." Written by Charles Delacroix on IMDb.com
    Reviews:
"This Bonanza episode, although it only features one of the Cartwright boys, Adam, is a suspenseful and touching episode that many fans will enjoy. As Adam takes cover from a storm at a stagecoach station, he meets with an outlaw, a young girl who wants to travel the world against her stern grandfather's wishes, and many others. Adam uses his smarts and judgment to help bring the outlaw to justice and help the young girl. Dawn Wells, better known for her role as Mary Ann on Gilligan's Island, gives a wonderful performance, as does Robert Vaughn, who is a convincing and somewhat suave outlaw. A classic western show and a great episode." Written by classicmovieman on IMDb.com
"Great to see Maryanne (Dawn Wells) in this hour long. She is just as beautiful here as on GI. Her chemistry with Pernell Roberts is very good. Also, making noteworthy appearance here is Robert Vaughn (pre-Man from Uncle). The plot seems reminiscent of Petrified Forrest." Written by smithbea on IMDb.com

This is a GREAT Adam episode. A quiet examination of his strength of character, and I loved his moments with Marty, he was so kind and wise in this one! Definitely my favorite Cartwright. ❤ Pernell was amazing.

I agree, Pernell was a first-class actor who was always professional in every way, to me the Series was never the same after he left and there was always something missing in the later episodes without him. I had heard that he felt unappreciated by the Producer of the Series and argued many times with him. I also heard that after Pernell left, the remaining three cast members "split" his Salary between them! Pernell was the best of all of them in my humble opinion............

I always loved shows and movies where people are caught in some shack or town and there's a storm. The Petrified Forest (1931) comes to mind. And many such plots in Outer Limits and Twilight Zone. This episode is quite engaging. Robert Vaughn was smooth as ever, and it fit. Dawn Wells as a bubbly persona seemed out of place at times, but still a good performance. Pernell Roberts was superb in this episode. Frank Cleaver, Fred Hamilton and David Dortort wrote a fine script. Everytime I see a stagecoach on a long shot, I think how miserable a ride that would be. Next time I'm on Greyhound, I'll remember that..

    • @GiftSparks
      @GiftSparks Месяц назад +1

Yes- I was thinking of The Petrified Forest too! But this ended up being a bit more believable. I mean, I always found it odd that the Leslie Howard character walks around with a life insurance policy with him. I mean, who does that? This actually was a bit nicer with the Robert Vaughn character getting redemption by seeing that Dawn Welles got the bounty money to pay for her arts education. Wonder how long the ride was from Virginia City to San Francisco on a stage coach.

"The Way Station." An apt title for an episode of choosing between two paths, the good and the bad, the one less traveled, and the one more traveled. Adam is his cool, logical self. Marti is dying to get "out of jail." Luke has made his choice of freedom to Mexico to thwart justice. Lucy is "experienced" at finding the "right" girls. Tim risks his life for the reward money. The stage driver just wants a respite from the storm. And domineering grandpa can't show his love in a gentle manner, not knowing for 8 years, he's caused a fractured relationship.
Jail, prison is what you make of your surroundings. The call of Freedom to grow is endowed in all of us. Tim would rather die than be in prison. Marti would like to get out of her 10-mile prison, with grandpa as her warden. Kindred spirts??
Most men are protective of their womenfolk. A talent is a gift that must be cultivated and harvested. Spunkyness means you will be all right with the right love.
    Key messages: 32:01 > 34:30, and 46:35 > 47:10.
Interesting continuity....8 shots from a 6-shooter! No extra bullets in their gun belts.
Good work with Pernell Roberts, Robert Vaughn, Dawn Wells, Dorthy Green and all!! Another good, didactic script for Sunday school. Kudos all around! Thanks Grjngo

It was fairly easy (for me) to side with the complicated Luke character, that is until his final interaction with Tim. Pernell was his usual awesome self (maybe a bit more). It’s shows like this that made ‘Bonanza’ one of the best American classics in video/movie chronology.

    • @earnold1896

Adam could have let him go. I'd be on Luke's side in this. I wouldn't let him be hung seeing he said it was self defence. Ha ( I'm caught up in the plot).

Tim was as big a lowlife scoundrel as Luke would have been. He knew him in the past, his wife revealed his faults and his greed in wanting to turn in Luke was apparent.

There was a time in Hollywood when actors were chosen for their talent rather than their looks. Actors like Pernell were born and bred for the silver screen. Literally born and bread. Most of these wannabes of today can't even come close to the amount of talent actors like Pernell and others like him had back in the day.
