Best unbiased review so far between the Golf R and Audi S3. In the UK the press are so biased towards the Golf R because its probably slightly quicker around a track and its cheaper. Dumb press forget, most buyers dont drive on tracks and its NOT cheaper as they the Audi has full leather, the Golf doesnt which is why its £1000 cheaper - leather in the Golf adds £2700, so its actuall more expensive than the Audi. The Audi comes in manual too.
I think your use of the word biased is not accurate, I think you are using it to hide that you prefer the Audi and don’t like that many people who have driven both and even the RS3 pre-facelift, have said that the Mk7 R is better dynamically. Are the U.K. biased towards the Leon Cupra against the Golf R, seeing as the Cupra is quicker on track?
the s3 and R are both mechanically the same but the build quality is a little better in the audi that's why u pay a premium..the golf R is also way too common that's why I bought a s3 instead..haven't seen another one one like mine on the road yet.. golf R...plenty
Yea, and the S3 is more expensive.. Haha just a big fat fail from audi.. And the R looks much more aggressive. I definitely deserves the R badge where as the audi.. I don't know.
I don't think so...interior of audi s3 are really much cool and elegant, more precious than golf. Golf interior are really rough and dated. The exterior also is better. Golf is a real boring car and it's really anonymous and ...imho
i just bought the GTI Clubsport with DSG & DCC, cars being made in about a week! - Someone wanna try to beat me at Nurnbergring...?? The S model sat - WORLD RECORD - there, and the normal one is only 20 HP less off that @ 290 HP Overboost... hehe ;)
Great video! Considering both cars perform the same, have the same platform, the same engine, the same transmission... Etc, it appears to me very hard to justify the $5k between these two. It just feels like you're really spending extramoney for the audi badge here, which is definitely not a fine move from audi IMO.
Nice film and review !!! I own an Audi now and have had VW's in the past. I'd choose either of these, but not in the 5 door forms as tested, but the 3 door better looking versions !!! But if forced I think i'd pick the Golf R in 3 door with DSG in Blue and save the extra cash !!!
In EU the R cost 40 000 dollars brand new and audi s3 50 000, the golf r costs 10 000 less and its more beautiful car so i would pick the golf r all day long
It's funny to read everybody's comments.. Best solution is to get regular GTI with performance package, give it stage 1 software and call it a day with a lot of money saved in your pocket !! That's what I'm going to do :-)
still no 4 motion, which make a nice difference. when i´ve seen the golf r the first time i preferred the gti (from the outside), but now i really like the R design (okay....quadpipes is not a musthave). and....if you have the money why should i save the money? :P
Another tester has tested the Golf R against the Seat Leon Cupra and found the FWD Seat to be quicker round the track than the Golf (and presumably the S3) thanks to its lower weight.... The Seat is also cheaper than either of these cars. However in wet and slippery conditions on the road I think the 4wd of the Golf might prove worth the money. I can't see why anyone would pay the premium for the Audi though, they are just as common as the Golf now and offer not tangible advantage for the extra cost.
IonicMAP RPM is a South African TV show. The S3 is available with a manual gearbox in South Africa, hence his statement is false. What exactly is your issue?
+Bestwick1983 The S3 sportback (the one in this review) is only available in s-tronic, I checked the website. The S3 (3door, not being reviewed) is available in manual. It says S3 "SPORTBACK" in the title of the video, genius. microsites.audi.co.za/_assets/e-Catalogues/a3/a3data/A3_S3_18_2013_03-update-brochure.pdf
+Tim I'm fully aware of what is available and don't need brochure to tell me about a car I already own. My point was that there is an option for a manual S3, just as they mention there is an option for a manual R even though the one being reviewed is DSG. The fact that it is only available in a 3-door doesn't change that fact...no matter what bodyshape is being shown right here.
+Bestwick1983 And the manual Golf R is 5 door in their country. This is a review about 5 door cars, and the 'S3 Sportback' which is a 5 door car, it never said it was a review of the 3 door 'S3' did it? no it didn't.
Understated...them both. Enters CLA45 AMG and A45 AMG. Don't get me wrong, I am a VAG fan for life, but maybe one day VAG will hear my plea. Options. Aesthetic appeal. Exclusivity. When one buys a car, they usually want to feel like the car they are buying is one that attracts attention and fame equal to the amount of money they pay for it. I do, anyway. I bought a GTI Autobahn (US spec). GREAT CAR! But for those who have no clue what a GTI is all about, they would never even guess it can do what it can by the looks of it. AS for the A3, we have the sedan version here in the US, and I really like the styling. But my main point of this post is to say that VAG needs to insert some scoops, vents, pin stripes, carbon fiber diffusers, etc. to really help the cars gain the attention they truly deserve, in my opinion. CLA45 AMG and A45 AMG cars have that 'I am a bad ass car and I know it' look to them. Okay, Subaru WRX...someone mentioned the Civic Type R. While I would probably never buy any of those other cars mentioned, I do highly admire their stance on the road. They just look the part. My GTI looks the part, as long as you have magnifying glass and 3 hours to explain how phenomenal the car is. Would much rather do that with a drive by, however. Search the Oettinger Golf VII R, and you will start to get the picture. And I would choose the S3, by the way, not because it's any better or whatever that the Golf R, but because I like the color options better, and I am not really a fan of the hatch back. Oh yeah, by the way, why does VAG continue to offer their higher spec'd cars in hatch backs? Golf R, RS3, RS6, RS7, except the RS4 (dead) and the RS5? Okay, yeah Audi TT. But I would like to know why Audi and Volkswagen alike don't make like 2-door coupes that are spec'd like their Golf's and RS versions. Guess, they are into building cars that can 'haul', cheesy pun intended.
I'll comment on the audi side far the golf does have some pretty nice eye candy body options if that's what you're looking for. Audi's were NEVER meant to be show pieces. They are cars of timeless, classy, elegant designs which you either love or hate. To some that is dull and lacking as to others very unique. In order to truly appreciate them, you have to understand them completely. As for comparing them to a Mercedes-Benz, and others...take a look at a 2006 C-class and compare it to a 2012. Now do the same with an A3. Now go back and read the earlier portion of my comment and it will all make the world of sense. BTW, I'm also a vag customer for life although I do own a volvo and Nissan too : )

+Phynomeagle i wish A45 AMG is in US, i would get that for sure. it's so beautiful compared to those two of VW and S3. but A45 is way more expensive than the two doesnt it?
I can't believe they did a whole review of 2 similar cars talking about performance and showing them on the track for much of the review and then didn't give us lap times to compare to see which is faster. I watched the whole thing waiting for them to say one is faster than the other round their track and by how much and then nothing. Big thumbs down for wasting my time!
Their speeds are the same. R might even be faster because its lighter. They have the same gearbox same awd system same engine. There is no need for watching a comparison. Well, In the Audi you pay for the brand more.
Unfortunately they both struggle to differentiate themselves from the lesser models in the range. Having said that the Golf looks much nicer sharper than the dumpy Audi and has better steering feel though this guys didn't mention it. Golf for me
i own a mk7 gtd not an r but both are built at the Wolfsburg plant and have to say for the price I payed the cars build quality is not that great. panel gaps are odd and distorted and the rear doors (5door) rub the c pillar where the window starts scuffed the lacquer down. sticky diesel cap (unable to open) and stop start error, unimpressed, so I will be leaving the golf contract early and try the s3 instead.
Golf R for sure. By the time they get state side the Audi will be way more expensive than the R and the S3 will only be in Sedan form here. I'm all about the top spec of a manufacturer, and with Audi the S3 is NOT the top spec A3.(always shamed by it's RS big brother) The Golf R however IS VW's top spec Golf. (for now)
Gotta laughs at the golf GTI comment below even with a revo your nowhere close in performance, the new R is a class of its own....however both cars are kinda boring looking, now the R400 is where golf should have gone with the R.... I nearly bought an S3 but it didn't excite me so I plumped for the A45. The S3 with a revo stage one does the quarter in 11.9 now that's very fast. If I had to choose one it would be the golf, Audi just cannot make the a3 look nice even the rs3 looked crap.... Rs6 yes please.....
Oh no not South Africa too! They should have 221KW, but some idiot at VW doesn't think the engine can handle the heat so they've lowered the specs, real shame (again VW, ruining its own products). Some sort of interlacing issue there guys? Forget to de-interlace when editing?
While you enjoy the wide open road. We'll be preparing for the next stop....MICHELIN!...or was it...BRIDGESTONE!....hmm i forget - if only the advertising was more obvious.
i'd go for the audi if it had manual gearbox. however flappy pedal gearbox in real life is a nightmare. try parking that thing without a clutch. too bad audi

Bought the Golf R. Arrives in 3 days! Very excited.
Iv ordered the S3... what a beautiful car! You are wrong about the transmission thought, you can get the S# in manual as well. BTW great video!
Excellent as always, very much appreciated. Cheers from Canada.
I get my s3 on the 2nd!! loads of people think the golf's better but my Mrs preferred the Audi. I was 50 50.

Buying the R next summer. The S3 offers no objective benefit and looks boring, IMO.
ME TOO !!

Abe Froman go sit in a s3 and then a golf r...doofus
I ended up buying the S3 the other day which is a four door sedan here in Canada.
+david dykeman how have you enjoyed it so far?
I get it tomorrow so it is too soon to say.
The car is very good so far. First oil change tomorrow. Time flys.
It is quick for a 4 cylinder and gets very good mileage. All in all I'm very happy and would buy one again.

My mistake :) :)
Funny@more the facelift is 7 speed
i love the interior and the sounds from these 2 cars. when i must take one of them i dont know witch one i would take but i love both 👍
can someone please tell me what the song is that starts at around 11seconds into vid please :)?

1:02 Yes, they both use Haldex :). You have to go A4 or higher to get "real" Quattro (Torsen) :D.
They aren’t the same. Audi has the nicer interior but the golf eats a s3 on the track.
My Two dream cars.
How's the reliability of these two?
for 50K...hummm, they look great but not sure I would pay that much.

Get the Golf. No point paying extra. VW is nicer IMO on the inside.
Golf R. The Golf R is a fast, but slightly numb driving experience. The S3 is a touch slower and the handling is even more subdued - no thanks.
-Audi S3 Sportback OR Volkswagen Golf R ?
I still think that the 7R should be compared to the RS3 and the S3 to the gti...
why ?
Wheres the track times

from an image point of view the audi wins???? Is that some kind of joke?
I suspect he means from the point of view of 'Status'
Exactly thats what I mean, is that some kind of joke?

Both golf and the s3 are astonishing, but Renault MEGANE R.S. 265 would run rings around them on the track.

In america, every car looks boring, I can tell you that though. SO this already looks good for american standards.
VW All day...Can't stand the typical Audi drivers these days, for some reason they make people have a god complex and drive like twats.
Mayor West vw drivers are way worse
S3 also comes with the 6-speed manual, just like the golf R.
